T his year’s CultureFest theme, SuperFest 2015: Heroes Unite! is a joyful celebration of those in our lives who inspire us and lift us up. While the term “heroes” naturally brings to mind popular comic- book superheroes whose powers we covet—Batman, Wonder Woman, or even the Incredibles— it can also mean so much more. Many times, we are inspired by ordinary people who have taken extraordinary action; men and women who have become cultural icons due to their power to effect change for good: artists, activists, scientists, inventors, Olympic athletes, and world leaders, etc. In this sense, some would consider Malala or Gandhi their heroes. And of course, there are the unsung heroes in our lives – family members, teachers, firefighters, police officers, doctors, members of the armed forces, or personal friends. As we encourage our community to think about the qualities we admire in our personal heroes, we also want our children to think about and celebrate their own “powers”: the power to be kind, to be creative, to be a good listener, and to be a good friend. Let’s ask them, and ask ourselves: What makes a hero? What makes an “ordinary” person “super”? What makes me “super”? Inside you will find articles, editorials, and reviews for our very own Super-fied version of San Francisco: Bay City. We hope you enjoy this playful expression of all things Superhero and take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary people who have offered inspiration in your own life. After all, everyone needs a hero. n We are inspired by ordinary people who have taken extraordinary action; men and women who have become cultural icons due to their power to effect change for good by Clark Kent

This year’s CultureFest

theme, SuperFest 2015: Heroes Unite! is

a joyful celebration of those in our lives who inspire us and lift us up. While the term “heroes” naturally brings to mind popular comic-book superheroes whose powers we covet—Batman, Wonder Woman, or even the Incredibles—it can also mean so much more. As we encourage our community to think about the qualities we admire in our personal heroes, we also want our children to think about and celebrate their own “powers”: the power to be kind,

to be creative, to be a good listener, and to be a good friend. Let’s ask them, and ask ourselves:

• What makes a hero?• What makes an “ordinary”

This spring, dare to supersize your

style! On March 28th, take a cue straight

from the runways of Milan, Paris, and NYC and flaunt your superhero within with larger-than-life ensembles bursting with vim and vigor. This season’s trends embrace bold colors, creative accessories, and one-of-a-kind styles full of personality:

“Superhero Chic”There’s no better time to shimmy

into a fabulous spandex number and let your true colors shine! Bright, primary hues paired with metallic accents are all you need to save the day. This trend is all about over-the-top style: think daring knee-high boots, utility belts with flair, and a dashing pair of fashion-forward gloves. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! Be sure to top off your powerful look with a mysterious mask, and of course…a fabulous cape.

“Independent Spirits”This trend is all about evoking the aura of courageous freethinkers

in times past and present. Don a stylish, weatherworn, brown leather bomber á la Amelia Earhart, or break out the white lab coat, muss up that ‘do, and come as Albert Einstein! Be creative in your interpretation of well-known artists, scientists, inventors, entertainers, or whomever you choose to honor on March 28th. Don’t be afraid to commit 100% - the beauty of this fashion trend is its earnest and heartfelt admiration of those who have positively impacted our culture and society. “Hometown Heroes”If imitation is the highest form of

flattery, now’s your chance to pay homage to personal heroes in your life. Perhaps it’s the fire-engine red uniform of a local firefighter, or that cozy knit sweater that Grandma likes to wear…the beauty of this look is all in the details! A vintage necklace, dapper hat, or sophisticated hairstyle may be all it takes to pay proper tribute to your hometown hero. Let your fashion tell their story on March 28th! “Super You” Come as you are, and let your inner hero shine! Wear whatever makes you feel super and ready to celebrate. n

Here are some of our heroes, can you name them? (Biographical information on page #8)

ARIES(March 21 – April 29)

You’ve worked so hard, Aries, to build a single laser that can destroy the world, and yet you’ve been thwarted again, AGAIN, by your nemesis. Instead of scrapping your original plan, why not use your innate determination to find a more secure warehouse on the edge of town. There your fiendish plots can hatch in secrecy. n

CANCER(June 21 – July 22)

Relationships are tense this week, Cancer, as your squad of avenging heroes starts to bicker over who gets top billing on the film poster. Use your empathy to listen and console, but warn them if they don’t stop fighting soon, you’ll call up a mighty hurricane to wash those egos down the river. n

TAURUS(April 21 – May 20)

Sometimes you feel like the entire police force is inept, Taurus, and with that break-out at the asylum, you don’t know how you’ll ever manage to recapture the escapees with the staff you have. This time, remind those exhausted coppers that every plain blue uniform hides a hero underneath. And spring for an open bar at this year’s Policeman’s Ball. n

GEMINI(May 21 – April 29)

Your sidekick has always been such a help, Gemini, but she’s starting to feel like it’s time to pursue her own crime-fighting career independent of you. Encourage her to explore her identity with a gift certificate for a brand new cape, and soon you may find your old Girl Friday is your new greatest ally in the fight for justice! n

LIBRA(September 23 – October 22)

You have a hard choice this week, Libra: return the Goblet of Destiny to the museum or drink from it and retain its otherworldly powers. Only your conscience can truly be your guide, but let the stars remind you of the gruesome ends met by all those who drank from the Goblet in ages past. n

LEO(July 23 – August 22)

No one understands you, Leo, and sometimes you feel like your brilliance is wasted on the world. But rather than committing acts of horror and destruction that will only turn the city against you, why not use your scientific genius to cure a rare disease, or spend more time with your Labrador? Mr. Kibbles may not know how to transmute uranium into plutonium, but he loves you just the same. n

SCORPIO(October 23 – November 21)

You find you’ve been fighting on the wrong side all along, Scorpio, as a clever plot reveals the oppression others have faced under your masked and skeletal boss. In your heart, you’ve sensed the tyranny of his rule for a while. Now is the time to abandon your old job and join the freedom fighters of the Great Rebellion! n

VIRGO(August 23 – September 22)

Every time you put a villain in jail, Virgo, another one seems to pop up in his place. And although Bay City still needs your protection, take a moment to consider your long-term philanthropic goals as well. By supporting causes that promote social justice, you could help turn a potential baddie into an honest citizen. How many library books could you buy for the price of that new Batmobile? n

CAPRICORN(December 22 – January 19)

You feel frustrated by your powers, Capricorn, and not for the first time. While other heroes can control the weather or the human mind, you can only turn into a goat. But remember when the Justice Alliance was captured in an enormous net, and you chewed through the ropes to free the group? Or when your timely head-butt sent Dr. Cruel over the precipice and saved the day? You are a person of value, Capricorn. Don’t forget it. n

AQUARIUS(January 20 – February 18)

Your daring costume leaves too little to the imagination, Aquarius. You might want to watch the YouTube video of the time you rescued all those orphans from the blaze at the convent. The nuns were scandalized. Is that how you want to be remembered? n

SAGITTARIUS(November 22 – December 21)

You thought that saving the life of your crush would be enough to communicate your feelings, but he’s not telepathic. He can only manipulate the flow of time. So take him by the hand and say “I love you.” The stars indicate he’s been speeding up the minutes until you do! n

PISCES(February 19 – March 20)

Alone you’ve toiled among the ranks of minions, Pisces, with no respect from the Dark Lord. No health care, no 401k, and nary a cost-of-living raise in almost a decade with the company. But soon the opportunity will arise for you to make a change. Should you take an unpaid internship at a different firm, hoping to move up the ranks somewhere new? Or should you seize a greater power – eliminating not just the middle man but the entire human race? You’ll know when the time comes, Pisces. Oh, you’ll know… n

ADVICE COLUMN Dear Dr. Psycho, I have been married to my won-derful husband “Igor” for thirteen years. He is brilliant, nurturing, and great with our two kids, but I can’t shake the feeling he is hiding something from me. For example, while cleaning out our garage last weekend, I found an elaborate underground lair with a working laboratory and multi-ple cages containing mutant or radioactive rats. He says that it was probably left behind by our home’s previous tenants, but I’m just not sure. How do I confront him in a way that lets him know I support his hobbies but don’t want the rats around the chil-dren? Signed,Nuclear Mom

Dear Nuclear Mom, You have two issues here: a lying spouse and biohazards in the ga-rage. First, install a childproof gate at the entrance to the lair, or if your children are older, make sure they understand the garage is off limits without the proper hazmat suits. Their safety must come first. Then, have a frank but gentle discussion with Igor. It’s possible he fears you won’t approve of his research. It’s also possible he plans to mutate the children into terrifying monsters who can enact his misguided revenge against the planet. Let him know that his scientific in-quiry means a great deal to you, as long as your family’s welfare comes first. Then investigate po-tential research facilities beyond your own home. At the very least, you may be in violation of your town’s zoning laws. Yours ever,Dr. Psycho

Dear Dr. Psycho, My arch-nemesis “Carol” and I are old high school classmates. Since we were fifteen, Carol has ridiculed me, physically assaulted me at every opportunity, and re-peatedly attempted to seize con-trol of the city using any means available, including mind-control rays, an army of spiders, and poisoned gas. Most recently, she hacked my Facebook profile and instructed my many fans and supporters to assassinate the mayor. How do we behave civilly at our upcoming 20-year high school reunion? I believe Carol belongs in jail, but I don’t want to ruin the party for everyone else. – Not a Party Pooper

Dear Not a Party Pooper, You want to have a good time with your old school chums, but I worry Carol will use the opportunity to destroy you once and for all. I think you should skip this event. You can always Skype in to wish the class a wonderful evening, giving your sincere regrets, and then host a smaller off-site gathering for former classmates at your home (to which Carol need not be invited). While a reunion is a wonderful place to reconnect with friends, it also provides an extraordinary opportunity for your foe to disguise her minions as middle-aged ex-cheerleaders, and trap you forever in a gym locker where no one can hear you scream. Yours ever,Dr. Psycho

Bay City Vanquishes Emerald City in Super Bowl

The Super Bowl certainly lived up to its name this year with Colin Supernick’s

bravura performance at quarterback leading the Bay City Prospectors to a 53-7 victory over arch-rivals the Emerald City Waterfowl. Supernick had six touchdown passes and 1-85 yard rushing touchdown for a franchise record in the championships.

Rumors had swirled that his superpowers were permanently

diminished by the presence of kryptonite in 11 out of 12 balls in a game earlier in the season. Supernick proved all naysayers and his presumed nemesis wrong by coming back stronger than ever to lead his team to glory.

It seemed at times as if he was flying down the field and his ability to see through the opposition’s defense to find open receivers astounded even his own teammates, “I’ll say it, he was super, there’s no other way to describe it,” declared tight end Michael Scott. n
