The Sweet Kiss Of Death – The Dangers Of Sugar

Too much sugar is not just bad for your teeth, as your mother warned you when

you were a kid. If pediatric hormone disorders specialist Robert Lustig is to be

believed, there's more to sugars than having rotten teeth. “It has nothing to do

with the calories. It’s a poison by itself,” Lustig boldly claimed in an article in the

New York Times.

With the prevalence of both processed and fast food,

people, particularly those in developed countries, are

consuming large amounts of sugar, thus exposing

them to the dangers of sugar. In the United States, it

is estimated that the average adult consumes sugar

that is equivalent to 21.4 teaspoons on a daily basis.

This figure does not include sugar added to food and

juices that people consume daily. This is way beyond

what the American Heart Association recommends.

The organization recommends adult males to limit

their sugar intake to nine teaspoons while females

should only take sugar equivalent to six teaspoons.

But what's all the fuss behind sugar?

Sugar is more than what experts call empty calories, meaning they provide no

nutritional benefit at all except for a sugar rush. Consumption of too much sugar

has been associated with increase in blood pressure, liver damage, changes in

metabolism and what have been called lifestyle diseases including diabetes, heart

disease and some forms of cancer.

Lustig goes on further to claim that it does not matter what type of sugar a person

consumes — refined or raw sugars both pose risks. And then there is the

argument for high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) which is in high use in the food

While it is a good idea to look at product labels of the items you are purchasing at

the supermarket, it is important to note that sugar may be lurking in the

background and labelled as another ingredient. This includes ingredients like

molasses, barley malt syrup, brown rice syrup and evaporated cane juice. You

might also think that it is only products like cookies and candies that contain high

Just because it says “vegetable,” it doesn’t automatically mean it’s healthy. This is

especially true in the case of vegetable oils. With the average person consuming

processed foods at an alarming rate, the danger of omega-6 vegetable oils should

The Truth About Lipitor Side Effects

have been exposed to the virtues of popular high cholesterol drug Lipitor. The

Pfizer drug is a keen sponsor of the beloved game show. It’s a clever ploy to target
