What is an internship?

•Practical experience in the work environment•Make direct contact with professionals in the community•Apply what you have learned in career academy or school program•Experience in the workplace that will be lifelong

SYIP Internship Basics

▪ Dates - July 1 – August 2, 2019

▪ Required hours - 150 during five-week period

▪ 30 hours weekly

▪ Work-based learning experience

▪ Student population – Rising 10th – 12th grade students between the ages of 15-18, reside in Miami Dade County, and are currently enrolled in M-DCPS

▪ Sponsored by Miami Dade County, The Children’s Trust, Career Source of South Florida, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, JPMorgan Chase, and the Foundation for New Education Initiatives for students approved to work in Miami-Dade County (SYIP)

Eligibility to Participate in SYIP

▪ Completed Online Pre-Internship Preparation Course

▪ Eligible to work (provided proof of social security)

▪ Reside in Miami Dade County

▪ Employed by a CTE approved organization located in Miami-Dade County https://miami.getmyinterns.org

▪ Secured school accident insurance - required

▪Opened South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union (SFEFCU) account by May 31, 2019

▪ Provided all required documentation by May 31, 2019

How do students get paid?

• Sponsored by Miami Dade County, The Children’s Trust, Career Source of South Florida, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and JPMorgan Chase, for students approved to work in Miami-Dade County (SYIP)

• Students will receive three (3) payments

• 1st payment July 8 - $100 to cover Incidentals and includes transportation stipend *• 2nd payment July 19- $634.50• 3rd payment August 9- $634.50- after all assignments and timesheets are submitted to Teacher Supervisor

• If on Company Payroll – Paid directly by company

• Internship Assignments – (completed via the Odysseyware internship online course)

• Timesheets –– totaled and signed weekly by internship supervisor and e-mailed by intern to their assigned teacher supervisor to be verified

How are students graded?

• Progress report - Midterm

• Student Self Evaluation

• Employer Evaluation

❑ Student Evaluations– delivered via the Odysseyware course

• Grade Calculation

❑50% assignments

❑50% internship supervisor assessment

What if the student does not have an internship placement?

After completion of online pre-internship course and resume´ have been approved:

• Apply for positions on the website -- https://miami.getmyinterns.org

• Schedule an Interview (call if you are late)

• Cancel future scheduled interview appointment(s), if necessary

• Accept the first placement offered

• Do not be a no-show!

• Call 305-693-3005 to inform us that you have been hired.
