From the Membership Director…As the renovations continue to progress, I am receiving lots of interest in our fantastic Club. The community is taking note that the new Wellness Center & Spa will be an incredible facility and they want to be a part of this exciting new chapter at the Club. Our scheduled Sneak Peek/Hard Hat Tour of the Wellness Center & Spa on

TABLE RESERVATIONS FOR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND SPECIAL EVENTS

We appreciate that so many members wish to be seated together for special events. We are asking for your assistance in helping us facilitate these requests.

If you are making a reservation for a table, we need the name and phone number of each person/couple attending. We have had several situations where (albeit good intentions) a member will sign up an entire table without confirming that all attendees are available. Unfortunately, this has resulted in members being signed up without their knowledge. Please be certain to confirm with all attendees of the table that they are available to participate and wish to attend the event. The person facilitating the reservation is responsible for all attendees on that reservation including financial responsibility for non-attendees.

SPLIT CHARGE NOTICEThe split charge for all a la carte meals/entrees (lunch and dinner) for all outlets will be $5.00. This includes the split of the main item and 2 individual sides (1 for each person). For specials such as buffets, brunches, etc. splits are not permitted. Thank you.

SPECIAL NOTICES

From the Catering Director…Although the holiday season may be six months away, it will be here before you know it! Now is the perfect time to get a head start on booking your holiday party at Vineyards! Banquet space fills up quickly during the holidays…contact me at the club to reserve your space!

Procacci Brothers Tomato Legacy Lives on at Vineyards for MembersIf you go into Vineyards kitchen, you will immediately spy a large bin of heirloom and grape tomatoes. These have come straight from the growers’ farm…that’s the farm of Vineyards Country Club owners, the Procacci Family!

Named Santa Sweets, they are famous for the Authentic Grape Tomato® & the UglyRipe® Heirloom Tomato. Santa Sweets is the only company in the United States that grows grape tomatoes from the first-generation grape tomato seed, which naturally boasts great flavor and sweetness. This seed variety is technically called the F1 Santa Variety. Joe Procacci's mission to grow the best tasting tomatoes was realized with the "Santa" variety seed - hence

he called the company Santa Sweets!

The UglyRipe® is an heirloom variety tomato. UglyRipes don't look like the other tomatoes that you'll find at your local supermarket – they're misshapen, have bumps, and aren't perfectly round, but they're big and have flavorful beauty that will be recognized by your taste buds! Joe Procacci wanted a name that reflected the unique appearance and taste of the tomato so he called it the UglyRipe.Vineyards has its own tomato storage closet where we constantly replenish our inventory to give our members the freshest ingredients...straight from the fields!

Naples Depot Museum TourThursday, August 9th at 10:00 AM (check in 9:45 AM)

Long hidden on the fringe of Florida's Gulf Coast and overlooked by developers until well into the 1880s, Naples' catalyst for settlement finally arrived forty years later when two rival railroads rolled into town within ten days of each other. Set in Naples' restored Seaboard Air Line Railway passenger station, the Naples Depot Museum welcomes visitors back to the railroading boom days of the Roaring Twenties and explains how generations of Southwest Floridians used technology and transportation to conquer a vast and seemingly impenetrable frontier. Seminole dugout canoes, a mule wagon, antique swamp buggy, restored rail cars and exciting interactive exhibits tell the story of how trade and travel transformed Naples from a napping village of 300 souls into today's glittering Gulf Coast resort. The Naples Depot Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and

is conveniently located in downtown Naples. This self-guided tour is $11 per person (6 person minimum). A docent led tour can be arranged for $16 per person with a 10 person minimum. Tour lasts approximately 1 hour. RSVP by Thursday, August 2nd. A 7-day cancellation policy applies for refund. Transportation is on own. Meet your Activities Director at the Naples Depot 1051 5th Ave. So. Naples, FL 34102.

Watercolor Classes When painting, one needs to explore different colors and textures to achieve a finished picture that represents the artist’s individual taste, perception, and goals. Painting in watercolor increases the range of options as the paint can be almost pastel or very vibrant. The Watercolor Ladies, Dee Ward and Ellen McKinney, are Certified Instructors of the celebrity TV watercolorist Terry Madden method. They have displayed their artwork in several local shows, studied under artists in other states, and managed the Stobart Gallery for several years. They are members of the National Watercolor Society and teach in several locations in Collier County as well as the Bonita Springs Art Cottage. They teach as a team and introduce one technique per class to incorporate into a finished painting by the end of class. You do not need to know how to draw to participate in this class. Learn how easy and fun Watercolor Painting can be! Each class is a stand-alone class meaning each piece is done and the next class is a whole new painting! Some interesting textural effects are achievable with watercolor painting including the use of instant tea as rust on an old tin roof, salt crystals as snow, a natural sea sponge offers numerous textural features, and lifting off paint with a paper towel creates depth in the picture. You can visit their website at www.watercolorladies.webs.com. The cost is $35 per class (every 7th class is free). RSVP for the first class to 353-1500. Every week thereafter, you will sign in at class and your member charge will be billed accordingly. A supply list may be obtained at the Club Administration Office or at the Meet & Greet.

Bocce!

BOCCE SOCIAL/NON-LEAGUE PLAYMembers may reserve a bocce court during non-league hours by calling the Vineyards Office at 239-353-1500. Court reservations are limited to a two hour time frame. Courts are identified as the North, Center and South Courts.

BOCCE INFORMATION ON THE WEBFor information on Bocce including rules, team schedules and more visit our Bocce Page at: http://vineyardscountryclubnaples.com/bocce-ball-courts

WINTER LEAGUE 2018 BOCCE WINNERS!"Bocce Mania” pictured from left to right: Mike Guerriere, Pat Labriola, Gary Clifton, Amy Clifton, Jack Lindung, Dick Moran, Lynn Moran and Mary Beth Lindung. Our record was 21 wins 5 losses (15-3 regular season and 6-2 in playoffs).

Serendipity brought the Bocce Mania team together. Eight players who did not know each other before joining the Vineyards bocce program have now become avid fans of the game—and good friends.

The Cliftons (Gary and Amy) and the Lindungs (Jack and Mary Beth) were randomly assigned to a team (Veni Vidi Bocce) in 2016. The other team members did not continue for the 2017 season, so they needed new players. A few days later the Lindungs met new Vista Pointe neighbors in the parking lot and asked if they had any interest in playing bocce. The neighbors were Mike Guerriere and Pat Labriola, who were delighted to join the team. For the Winter 2018 league they

changed the team name to Bocce Mania and decided to expand the team to eight players, so they invited Dick and Lynn Moran to join the team. The Morans had never played bocce, but they were eager to give it a try.Mike Guerriere practices almost every day and claims to throw over 1,000 balls each week. His dedication has inspired the other players and they have all added extra practice sessions between games. This paid off when they won the Winter 2018 championship.

Bocce Mania certainly “clicked,” both on and off the court. The players have made it a routine to stay after the game each week and have drinks and dinner together in Mr. P’s Pub. They have become true friends as well as supportive teammates. They are very grateful to the Vineyards Bocce League for bringing them together!

SPRING LEAGUE 2018 BOCCE WINNERS!"Under a leaden, rainy Naples spring sky, the Lawn Rangers, captained by Tom McKiernan, won the 2018 Vineyards Spring Bocce competition in a hard-fought match with the Bocce Mania team, winners of the Winter League. There was a short rain delay at the start of the match and several interruptions caused by brief showers. However, despite of the less the cooperative weather, the match was characterized by skillful play from both teams before a winner could be determined.

The team members are Tom and Jeanne McKiernan, Ron and Jean Jalbert, Jim and Jean Kostek, Chuck and Linda Grelle and John and Sharon Randolph. The Lawn Rangers also won the 2017 Vineyards Fall Bocce competition. This team was formed in 2016 with the introduction of the Bocce Program at the Vineyards. None of the initial team members had much, if any, prior Bocce experience. Captain Tom’s goal in forming and organizing the Lawn Rangers was to

have weekly fun-filled and enjoyable sports and social interaction with friends and neighbors at the Vineyards. That goal has been realized. Bocce is now woven into the social fabric of the Vineyards, thanks to everyone involved in organizing, administering and officiating the Bocce program."

I hope everyone is having a great summer. This summer has started off with a little excitement with an early tropical storm that required us to move our Folds of Honor tournament to the following week. Previously, this event was held in September but with the challenge of the wet conditions and near daily rain showers that we receive we made the decision to move it earlier in the year. Of course, the weather would be better in May than it would be in September! Mother Nature had a

different plan! So if you need rain, let me schedule a golf tournament and it will rain. I want to thank all the members that participated in this event and all the businesses that support this great event by donating gift cards and dinners for two at their restaurants. I hope that everyone will support these venues in with dining or use of their services. This tournament not only makes for a great time, but we raise money for the military personnel.

The season will be here before you know it. I have the entire calendar on the website and you can go there and see when the major golf events will be happening. I know many of you plan to be down here for these great events. The Procacci Cup invitational is scheduled for March 7, 8 & 9, 2019.The committee has been meeting and we are working on getting more players in the event and creating a couple of flights of four tee players. All the players in these flights would play from the four tees. This change is due to feedback that we received from the 2018 Procacci Cup and the committee is responding to try and fill that request. Please keep this in mind when you are asking a guest to come down to play in the event.

We hope that you have a great end of the summer and we will see you back down here in October or November.

Golf Golf

I happen to love Guacamole on my Mexican food. This luscious green slimy stuff just somehow gives me a great feeling of satisfaction. It seems to go with everything, from; chicken, beef, pork and chips and salsa. I guess it’s that fresh taste it provides. I used to know this guy who would cut up avocados and eat them with cereal and milk. Mmm, Green slime!

There’s another green slime I want to talk about that isn’t good at all. I’m talking about the water pollution that has hit some of our communities along the southern coastal areas of Florida. I’m sure you saw the news late last summer over by the Stewart area and up along some inlets of Cape Coral. This green slime is an algae. This algae is not good by any means in our waterways, it deprives the waters of dissolved oxygen and there by… killing everything else in the ecosystem. These algal blooms sends the environmentalist into action, nobody wins. We all lose something when this occurs. Whether it’s a loss of tourism or desired realistate or good fishing and watersports. Funny how this algae looks just like guacamole floating on top of the water, it’s just terrible! Now, let’s throw some hot sauce into the mix and you got Red Tide. This is another algae that will; irritate your wind pipe, kill fish and stink to high heaven. These algae’s are caused by; fertilizer and nutrient runoff, car washes, parking lots or just Man in general. We have developed a new term for this and it’s called” non-point source pollution”. Meaning, there is a lot of different little sources coming from everywhere.

Some say, this pollution is caused by the farmers around the Okeechobee basin. I feel everybody has played a role in this dilemma especially; if we all drive cars, own homes, go out to eat or just plain being part of modern day society.

Turfgrass is here to save the day! Our university professors have proven that a good healthy stand of turf is one of the best water filters we can use to protect our waterways. This is the biggest reason municipalities send the reclaimed water out to the golf courses. In fact a city may even build a golf course if they have too much water to hold at the water treatment plant. The turf helps digest the treated sewage water before it goes back into the environment. Here at the Vineyards, the golf courses provide a huge filtering system for our communities as they handle large amounts of run off and erosion control and filter Collier county reclaimed water. Yes… we do use fertilizers because we want to keep a healthy turf. What they showed is that conversely, an un-healthy turf can also pollute because the thatch layers could be nonexistent as the grass becomes super thin and hungry. This situation can lead to another type of pollution of soil loss. What we have to do is make sure that we keep the grass healthy and get the fertilizers on the turf… and not leave it in the roads or on the sidewalks where by which it could easily run down the storm sewers and into our waterways.

The church that I belong to just recently installed a new type of environmentally sound turfgrass parking lot. It drains and filters runoff waters and is great to drive on, and the soil microbes digest any oil that a car might drip. Imagine if all our shopping centers had turfgrass parking lots. I feel this would protect our neighboring Gulf waters immensely. So, the next time you fertilize your lawn make sure the granules are all swept up or blown into the turf. Let’s all try to make healthy turf to protect our waterways and not make green slime.

Procacci Cup Sponsor Spotlight

Meet George Schmelzle, President at IRMS (Insurance Risk Management Services).IRMS provides insurance and risk management services for individuals and businesses throughout Southwest Florida. George and his father (George Schmelzle) founded IRMS in 1989. George Sr. realized that offering insurance products was just one element of a larger process known as Risk Management. He knew that Risk Management provides greater protection than insurance alone because it focuses on eliminating or reducing risk by proactively working to prevent accidents, injuries and lawsuits before they occur.George was a Football Student Athlete at Bowling Green State University where he was the Team Captain while

garnering all-MidAmerican Conference honors. He has lived in Naples for the majority of his life, and just celebrated his 30th Wedding Anniversary.George, Dave Sumner and all the IRMS associates work closely with many of the Vineyards community associations and individual clients. They are proud to support Vineyards Country Club and the Procacci Cup Tournament.

TennisCourtside Joy Frederick, Director of Racquet Sports

For those who are lucky enough to stay all year and actually enjoy Naples, here are some tips for playing tennis in the heat.

1. Drink lots of fluids- water and Gatorade before and after play.2. Wear a hat or a visor. Take hat or visor off on change-overs and the let

the breeze in. Sometimes, hats can hold the heat inside them. But, it is important to be protected from the sun.

3. Try to be in the shade as much as possible. Take your full 90 second break.4. Use sunscreens and wear sunglasses.5. Make sure you eat a good breakfast before playing tennis. It helps with

your energy level.6. Wear light color shirts. I wear a lot of white during the summer months. It

does make a difference.7. If you are not feeling well, please stop playing and have someone get a

staff person.

Rules about the “kitchen or non-volley zone”

1. You may not hit a volley while in the kitchen or non-volley zone this is considered a fault (loss of point). This also includes standing on the kitchen line while hitting a volley.

2. Your momentum from the volley may not take you into the non-volley zone after you hit the ball. This is considered a fault.

3. In the act of a volleying, it is a fault if a player or anything the player is wearing or carrying touches the non-volley zone or touches any part of the non-volley line.

4. If you hit a volley, your momentum cannot carry you into the kitchen even after the ball is dead (bounced twice on the other side).

5. Your partner is permitted to hold you back from falling into the non-volley zone after you have hit a volley.

6. If you hit a volley and then your hat or paddle fall into the non-volley zone this is a fault.

7. You can enter the non-volley zone (kitchen) at any time as long as you don’t hit a volley while you are in there.

8. You can stand in the non-volley zone while your partner serves or hits a shot, but you cannot volley while standing there.

9. If you are in the non-volley zone, you must establish both feet outside the non-volley zone before you can once again hit a volley.

10. As long as a ball bounces first, you can hit a shot while standing in the non-volley zone. You simply cannot volley while standing in the non-volley zone.

11. If you hit a groundstroke but your momentum from the shot carries you into the non-volley zone it is a legal shot. Just don’t hit a volley on your next shot while in the kitchen!

DID YOU KNOW?Brightly colored fruits and vegetables contain a variety of powerful antioxidants. Purple foods, in particular, contain an antioxidant called anthocyanin. Research has linked anthocyanins to increased longevitiy, cardiovascular health, cancer prevention, and lower risk of dementia. Blueberries, dark grapes, pomegranate, purple sweet potato and beets (and red wine!!) are all high in this purple powerhouse.
