The Beginning of the Relationship betweenSiam and the Austro-Hungarian Empire

The bilateral relations between Austria and Thailandbegan in 1865 during the reigns of King Mongkut(Rama IV) and Emperor Francis Joseph I when the twocountries established consular relations.

The first Austrian consul to Siam was Mr. AlexiusRedlich.

Two years later, Emperor Francis Joseph I dispatchedan envoy to strengthen diplomatic ties during the reignof King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and Austria was, infact, the first European country to send the envoy toSiam. The Treaty of Friendship, Commerce andNavigation was thereupon signed on 17 May 1869.

On 1 February 1883, Mom Chao Parutsadang, therepresentative of King Rama V presented to EmperorFrancis Joseph I the letter of Credence accrediting himas the first diplomatic representative of Siam to Austria.

Anfang der Beziehungen zwischen demKönigreich Siam und der Österreichisch-Ungarischen Monarchie

Die bilateralen Beziehungen zwischen der Österrei-chisch-Ungarischen Monarchie und Siam begannen imJahre 1865 während der Herrschaft von KönigMongkut (Rama IV) und Kaiser Franz Joseph I.

Der erste österreichische Konsul war Herr AlexiusRedlich.

Zwei Jahre später entsandte Kaiser Franz Joseph I.eine Gesandschaft nach Siam während der Herrschaftvon König Chulalongkorn (Rama V). Somit war Öster-reich das erste europäische Land, das die freundschaft-liche, hochranigige Beziehung mit Siam offiziell eta-bierte und bestärkte. Der Vertrag über Freundschaft,Handel und Seefahrt zwischen den beiden Ländernwurde am 17. Mai 1869 unterzeichnet.

Mom Chao Parutsadang, der Repräsentant desKönigs, überreichte dem Kaiser Franz Joseph I. am 1.Februar 1883 seine Ernennungsurkunde.

The relationsbetween the twocountries havebeen drawn evencloser by theroyal visit ofKing Rama Vto Austria, firstto Bad Ischl andthen to Vienna,from 17 to 26June 1897 as aguest of EmperorFrancis Joseph I.

His Majestytravelled fromTyrol, passingby Innsbruckand stayed at Bad Ischl from 17-22 June where he visi-ted Kaiser Villa, the summer residence of EmperorFrancis Joseph I, and took an excursion to the vicinitysuch as Hallstatt, Gmunden and Ebensee. His Majestyexpressed his impression of all the natural beauty ofAustria all the way in the letter to the Queen.

King Chulalongkorn left Bad Ischl for Vienna by anofficial court-train which was sent to receive him byEmperor Francis Joseph I. The Emperor welcomed HisMajesty with the highest state ceremonies including amilitary parade at Schönbrunn Palace and invited himto reside at the Hofburg Imperial Palace.

His Majesty paid a visit to various places such as theNatural History Museum, the Art History Museum,the State Opera, the Spanish Riding School andKahlenberg.

Upon departure, Emperor Francis Joseph I presentedKing Rama V with a Lipizzaner horse which was dulyshipped to Siam.

Beim Öster-r e i c h b e s u c hSeiner Majestätvom 17. bis 26.Juni 1897 fuhrder König zu-erst nach Tirol,Innsbruck unddann nach Wien.

König Chulalongkorn beschrieb die wunderschöneLandschaft Österreichs in seinen Briefen an dieKönigin. Während seines Aufenthaltes besuchte seineMajestät die Kaiservilla, die Sommerresidenz vonKaiser Franz Joseph I. und machte Ausflüge nach Hall-statt, Gmunden und Ebensee.

König Chulalongkorn verließ Bad Ischl und fuhr mitdem Sonderzug nach Wien. Während seines Besuchesin Wien vom 22. bis 26. Juni 1897 empfing der KaiserFranz Joseph den König Chulalongkorn mit militäri-schen Ehren in Schloß Schönbrunn.

Seine Majestät besuchte wichtige Sehenswürdigkei-ten in Wien, wie z. B. das Naturhistorische Museum,das Kunsthistorische Museum, die Oper, die SpanischeHofreitschule und den Kahlenberg.

Nach dem Besuch schenkte ihm der Kaiser einenLipizzaner, welcher mit dem Schiff nach Siam transpor-tiert wurde.

The Establishment of Diplomatic Relations andThe State Visits of His Majesty King BhumibolAdulyadej (Rama IX) and Her Majesty QueenSirikit to the Republic of Austria

The diplomatic relations between Thailand andAustria were formally established on 2 July 1953, andAustria opened an embassy in Thailand in that year.Later on Thailand opened an embassy in Vienna in1960. Subsequently, the diplomatic relations wereupgraded to an ambassador levelin 1963. Brigadier ChatchaiChoonhavan was the firstAmbassador of Thailand to theRepublic of Austria.

One year after the upgradingof diplomatic relations, theFederal President of Austria, Dr.Adolf Schärf, invited TheirMajesties King Bhumibol Adul-yadej and Queen Sirikit to visitAustria from 29 September to 5October 1964.

Their Majesties paid a visit tovarious places in Vienna such as St. Stephen’sCathedral, the Imperial Treasury Museum, the SOS-Kinderdorf, the Spanish Riding School, and the CityHall and also attended a Gala performance of “TheMarriage of Figaro” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart atthe State Opera.

In honour of Their Majesties, the Federal Presidenthosted a state dinner in the Hall of Banquets at theHofburg Palace where a state dinner for King Rama Vwas also hosted by Emperor Francis Joseph I in 1897.

Their Majesties also sojourned to the nearby citiesincluding Krems, Linz and Salzburg. Their Majesties’visit to Austria has been well-remembered and talkedabout by the Austrian peoples until today.

Die diplomatischen Beziehungen wurden nach demzweiten Weltkrieg am 2. Juli 1953 offiziell etabliert.Die österreichische Bundesregierung eröffnete eineBotschaft in Thailand noch im selben Jahr. Mit derEröffnung der Königlich Thailändischen Botschaft in

Wien im folgenden Jahre vollzogsich die Anhebung der Bezie-hung auf Botschaftsebene. Bri-gadier Chatchai Choonhavanwar der erste thailändische Bot-schafter in Wien.

Ein Jahr später lud der damali-ge Bundespräsident von Öster-reich, Dr. Adolf Schärf, Ihre Ma-jestäten König Bhumibol und Kö-nigin Sirikit zu einem Staatsbe-such in Österreich vom 29. Sep-tember bis 5. Oktober 1964 ein.

Ihre Majestäten besuchten dieSehenswürdigkeiten in Wien wie beispielsweise denStephansdom, die Schatzkammer, das SOS Kinderdorf,die Spanische Hofreitschule, die Hofburg und dasRathaus. Ihre Majestäten besuchten auch einen inter-nationalen Stahlindustriekonzern in Linz. Außerdembesuchten Ihre Majestäten ein Konzert, wo ihnenMozarts “Die Hochzeit des Figaro” vorgespielt wurde.Anschließend fand das Staatbankett statt und zwar inderselben Lokalität, wo 67 Jahre davor zum Besuch desRamas V. der offizielle Höhepunkt gefeiert worden war.

Später verließen Ihre Majestäten Wien und nahmeneinen Sonderzug nach Salzburg. Dieser Besuch Öster-reichs ist der Bevölkerung bis zum heutigen Tag inguter Erinnerung erhalten.

The highlight of the state visit was theperformance of His Majesty’s compositi-ons, namely “Kinari Suite”, “Falling Rain”,“Love at Sundown”, “Royal Marines March”and “Royal Guards March” by the ViennaPhilharmonic Orchestra at the Golden Hallof the Musikverein on 3 October 1964.The concert was broadcast live nationwi-de through Austria National Radio.

On 5 October 1964, the Academy ofMusic and Performing Arts Vienna, nowthe University of Music and PerformingArts Vienna, which was established in 1817and had then listed only 22 HonoraryMembers, presented the 23rd HonoraryMembership to His Majesty the King in recognition ofhis jazz compositions and other musical achievements.The inscription of His Majesty’s name “BhumibolAdulyadej’’ was shown on the Academy’s commemora-

tive stone. At the age of37, His Majesty KingBhumibol Aduljadej ofThailand became theyoungest member and thefirst Asian composer tohave received this honour.Ever since, exchanges ofvisits have been carriedout continuously at alllevels and bilateral tieshave been intensified, ran-ging from trade, invest-

ment, academic, scientific and cultural cooperation. Incommemoration of a long and cordial relationship, thetwo countries celebrated the 55th anniversary of theestablishment of diplomatic relations and the 140thanniversary of a long-standing relationship in 2008.

Als krönender Abschluss des Österreich-besuches Ihrer Majestäten fand ein Kon-zert der Wiener Philharmoniker im Gol-denen Saal des Wiener Musikverein mitden Kompositionen seiner Majestät desKönig, z. B. “Kinari Suite”, “FallingRain”, “Love at Sundown”, “Royal MarinesMarch” and “Royal Guards March” statt.Das Konzert wurde in der ganzenRepublik ausgestrahlt.

Am 5. Oktober 1964 wurde KönigBhumibol als 23. Ehrenmitglied des imJahre 1817 gegründeten Instituts fürMusik und darstellende Kunst, heuteUniversität für Musik und darstellende

Kunst, aufgenommen.Sein Name “Bhumibol Adulyadej” wurde in die

Marmorplatte im Institut eingraviert. Der Präsident desInstituts erkannte in seiner Festrede an, dass SeineMajestät in seinen Kompositionen westliche und östli-che musikalische Elementen harmonisch kombinierte,und mit zahlreichen Werken trotz seines damaligenAlters von 37 Jahren sein außerordentliches musikali-sches Talent bewies. Somit ist der König das jüngsteMitglied und der erste asiatische Komponist über-haupt, dem diese Ehre zuteil wurde.

Die zahlreichen Besuche auf allen Ebenen führten zurweitreichenden Entwicklung der bilateralen Beziehun-gen und zur Kooperation im Bereich Kultur, Bildungund Handel zwischen Thailand und Österreich bisheute.

Während die thailändische Botschaft 2008 den 55.Jahrestag der Gründung der diplomatischen Beziehun-gen Thailand-Österreich in Wien feierte, feierte dieösterreichische Botschaft in Thailand ebenfalls den140. Jahrestag der Beziehungen Thailand-Österreich inBangkok.

Business and Investment Opportunities bet-ween Thailand and Austria

Despite the fact that the current global economic cri-sis has affected our economies with repercussions mani-fested in the declining trade and investment volume betweenthe two countries, Thailand remains an attractive destina-tion for business and investment from Austria. Eco-nomic strength and potentials of Thai-land include its strategic location at theheart of Asia and a gateway to ASEANas well as sub-regional economic cooper-ation frameworks, the bilateral free tradeagreements with major trade partners,namely China, Japan, Korea, India, Austra-lia and New Zealand, the open trade andinvestment policies of the governmentand the well-developed infrastructurewhich creates business and investment-friendly environment.

Moreover, the expansion of infrastructure, especiallyinvestment projects in transportation railway systemwithin the country and throughout the region as well asthe existing diversified production bases with high qua-lity services, for examples, in food production, automo-bile, fashion industry, logistics and services, is amongmany advantages to do business and invest in Thailand.

Currently, Austrian entrepreneurs are extremely acti-ve in expanding business and investment in Thailand inthe following sectors: public transport and logistics,energy, water management, medical technology andhealth services. According to the Board of Investmentof Thailand’s statistics (2003 to July 2009), the value ofAustrian investment is about 10 million euro per year.75 projects with a combined investment value of 308.9million euro have been approved from 1970 to July2009. Investment is concentrated in sectors, namely,precious stones and jewelry, medical equipments, auto-mobiles, electronic parts and appliances, and services.

Obwohl die Finanzkrise sich auch auf die thailändi-sche und die österreichische Wirtschaft auswirkte undsowohl Handelswerte als auch Investitionswerte redu-zierte, bleibt Thailand ein interessanter Handelspartnermit attraktiven wirtschaftlichen Investitionsmöglich-

keiten aufgrund seiner Stärke undPotenzials ausgehend von verschiede-nen Faktoren wie der geographischenLage (Thailand ist ein Tor zur ASEAN)und der wirtschaftliche Kooperations-netzwerke der Regionen.

Dazu gehört der Wirtschaftszusam-menschluss ACMECS (Ayeywady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Co-operation Strategy) zwischen den Län-dern Kambodscha, Laos, Myanmar,

Thailand und Vietnam sowie die GMS (GreaterMekong Subregion) und BIMSTEC (Bay of BengalInitiative for Multi Sectoral Technical and Economic),dem freien bilateralen Handelsabkommen zwischenThailand und China, Japan, Südkorea, Indien,Australien und Neuseeland.

Zur Zeit investieren österreichische Unternehmensehr stark in die Bereiche Transport und Logistik, Um-welttechnik, Energie, medizinische Technologie und inden öffentlichen Gesundheitsdienst.

Laut der Statistik des Board of Investment Thailand(BOI) aus den Jahren 2003 bis Juli 2009 investierteÖsterreich in Thailand jährlich im Gesamtwert von 10Millionen Euro. Von 1970 bis Juli 2009 wurden insge-samt 75 Investitionsprojekte genehmigt.

Der Gesamtwert aller Investitionen beträgt 308,9Milionen Euro.
