This research objective is to see the correlation between self-concept and self-esteem in late adolescence based on gender differences. The outcome of this research serves as the initial data on self-esteem in late adolescents.
The respondents are 172 late-adolescents students from Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung, Indonesia, age 19-20 years old. This research is a correlational study. The respondents were asked several questions by face-to-face, by email, and by phone. Researchers use close – ended question by using scale 1 to 5 for answering the questions. The questions are derived from Self Perception Profile for Adolescence by Susan Harter (1989).
Susan Harter (1989) found eight domains of self-concept in The Self Perception Profile for Adolescence - scholastic competence, athletic competence, social acceptance, physical appearance, behavioral conduct, close friendship, romantic appeal and job competence – plus global self-esteem.
This research finds that the first domain that has the highest correlation between self-concept and self-esteem in both male and female are social acceptance or attractiveness for opposite sex. This result occurred because according to Erik Erikson Psychosocial development stages (1968) late adolescence are in stage six, intimacy versus isolation. In this stage, late adolescents will explore their personal relationships. The second domain in male is athletic competence and the third is scholastic competence. In female respondents, the second domain is physical appearance and the third is job competence or organization skills.
