WelcomeDear friends,

I am writing this inthe wake ofHurricane Ophelia,which on 16 and 17

October struck the Pembrokeshire coast,amongst other places. It's an area I knowvery well, as I have been going there onholiday since I was 14, to stay in a tiny littlecottage up on an isolated mountainside.It was very odd to think of the beautifulbeach below the cottage being lashed byhuge waves, and the winds - which alwaysblow pretty strongly around the cottage -wreaking havoc around that whole area.I haven't heard of casualties there, butplease do pray for all who have beenaffected, both there and elsewhere acrossthis island, as well as more profoundly onthe island of Ireland.

The effect here in Suffolk, apart fromslightly higher winds than normal, wasvisible in the extraordinary yellowish-brown colour that the day took on, followedby a dazzlingly brilliant red sunset - allapparently caused by sand from theSahara and smoke from the fires inPortugal being taken up in the winds. Thisearth and its weather and atmosphere areat times very strange things - who couldhave dreamed them up?!

We are sorry that we had to cancel theSuffolk MIND course on 7 October owingto the illness of the speaker, but here isadvance warning that it will take place on27 January instead; more news about thatnearer the time.

We had a wonderful morning withMagdalen Houlihan on Silent Prayer inSSM on 10 October, and following on fromthat we are going to resurrect our ownSilent Prayer Group, starting on 6November at 11.30 a.m. at the Rectory.It's a time to be silent before God beforesharing some time together talking aboutwhat is important in our lives at present.If enough people are interested, we couldalso have a light lunch together afterwards.If you plan to come, it would be good toknow, so please be in touch.

Here is another reminder that on 10November at 7.30 p.m. in Holton churchwe shall be doing a reading of St Luke'sGospel in the King James Version. As yousip a glass of wine (or something else!),readers from around our parishes will taketurns in reading the beautiful stories thatwe all know and love from that Gospel.Please bring a cushion for your owncomfort!

Christmas draws ever nearer, and we aregetting more and more seasonal events inthe pages - particularly those at thebeginning of December, just so you canplan ahead!

Money from sponsors has now beencollected and the total achieved by bikersand donations this year was £1185.00.Half of that sum will go to St Mary’sChurch and the other half will be held in acentral fund, from whichchurches/chapels can bid for help withprojects and repairs.

Mr Bill D triumphed again this year,reaching 37 churches and achieving forthe first time 100 miles covered in theallotted time.

Research continues into items for the bookof memories which will document life inStratford St Mary from quirky history totoday’s stories and characters. We still wantto hear your stories because it will be yourbook! So dig out your old photographs ortales that you would like to share then sendthem to [email protected] or call meon 07989639583.We are also continuing to arrange a numberof get-togethers in the Parish Room or thevillage pubs etc to get the old memory cogsworking to help identify information for thebook. These might be coffee mornings,cheese and wine evening and so on, wherewe can chat and perhaps get some of theold photographs out. They will be foreveryone, all ages and old and new to thevillage so we can share stories and ensurethey continue into our history so keep youreyes open for posters around the villageand in the Quartet.

COMMUNITY SPEEDWATCHSCHEME

This has been in operation since 2013 andis run by village residents giving their timein order to make our village safer forresidents of all age groups by encouragingmotorists to drive through our village at nomore than the legal limit of 30mph.

We would, however, welcome a few morevolunteers into the scheme so if you couldspare just 1 or 2 hours per month pleaseconsider joining us.

Fair TradeCoffee Morning

A rather cool morningand slow start for ourFair Trade coffeemorning today, but withthe arrival of sun driedtomato and cheese

Scoffins and chocolate banana cakeeveryone seemed to swarm in together. Weare so lucky to have “Frinton” friends likethis and very much appreciate all the baking.The photograph of our “Twinned Toilet” hadarrived! It’s very pleasing to know that weare helping a family to better health andhygiene. It was suggested that instead ofour own families buying us Christmaspresents we should ask them to clubtogether and twin our toilets at home.Brilliant idea! I have the forms and there aresome at the back of our Church, so hopethe idea takes off!The shoe box scheme for “OperationChristmas Child” was suggested for nextmonth, we’ve taken part in this severaltimes so we know what to put in them. Wehave a few shoe boxes so bring any itemsyou collect and we’ll put the boxes togetherwhilst enjoying our usual good coffee andgood company.Meanwhile, thanks to all the coffee morningmodels and audience who supported theEdinburgh Woollen Mill fashion show. Wehad a really fun evening and managed toraise £315.00 for the fabric fund.

Raydon and District Gardening Club

On a very cloudy day in mid October as Ilook out of the window it reminds me howwe will have to get used to this over thecoming months. But do not get toodespondent because this time of yearoften brings lovely sunny days if but a bitchillier early mornings & nights. The birdsare building up the fat reserves to see themthrough the cooler times ahead & thesquirrels are digging holes to bury hazelnuts once again. Now as gardeners theNew gardening Year starts with movingshrubs, plants etc to new spots in thegarden or planting new bulbs to enlightenus in Spring time, veggie gardens needcompost dug in, tender plants needprotection either with fleece or moved to agreenhouse-shed for added warmth sothere is plenty to do.

Don`t forget to compost the last of theleaves but not too tidy, save some for wildlife to hibernate in as they need warmth aswell as us.

The October meeting with guest speakersJim Marshall & Sarah Cook was a delightfulevening as ever as they “rub off” eachother with their knowledge of all thingsgardening, with humour, words of wisdom& encouragement to inspire us all togreater things. The only disappointmentwas a low attendance (most unusual) butmany people have late holidays so this mayhave contributed. Certainly no reflection onquality of our guest speakers.

So to November 23rd which is our lastmeeting in 2017, and the time for allmembers to come along for our AGMbusiness & Social evening (AGM only takes1/2hour) then it’s table quizzes, wine, coldbuffet, grand raffle, may even be a guestappearance from local gardening world, allto be enjoyed with invited guests & friends +any new people who wish to join the club onthe night. Members note it’s time to renewyour membership for 2018, our 38thanniversary year. Thank you all for yourcontinued support and hope you enjoy theclub as much as your committee enjoysrunning it. RAYDON PARISH PLAN SURVEY 2017– RESULTS OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE

The Parish Council received 62 completedquestionnaires – 140 residents wererepresented, which is 28% of thepopulation. Typically a survey of this typegets a 10% return rate so we areparticularly pleased with this response.

It is worth noting that approximately 15%of children under 16 were represented;19% of working age adults wererepresented; 63% of people aged 60+ wererepresented. It was very pleasing to notethat nine children aged 11- 18 completedthe questionnaire.

The survey results include a lot of valuableinformation and opinions on transport,housing, facilities and the environmentaround Raydon. The Parish Council will beable to use this to guide our decisions onfuture activity.

Thank you to all those parishioners whocompleted the questionnaire.

The full results can be found on thewebsite: www.raydonpc.org – and are alsodisplayed on the noticeboards (next to thechurch, and on Sulley’s Hill).

I would like to thank everybody whogave donations at Cliff's funeral. Thetotal amount donated was £1,060 - acheque for £582.50 will be sent to St.Elizabeth Hospice and a cheque for£477.50 will go to the Boxford &Hadleigh Health Centre. I am sopleased with the amount, also thankyou for all the cards and letters yousent, they are greatly appreciated.

Healthwatch Suffolk is exploring people’s experiences of accessing home care services(domiciliary care). It is an opportunity for you, your friends or family members to influenceand improve these services now and for the future.

The watchdog wants to hear from people that are currently using home care services,have used them in the past or those who may need help at home but have been unableto obtain support in the county.

Domiciliary care is care provided in a person’s home. Sometimes it is called home careor ‘Support to Live at Home’. Home care can include support with things like helpingpeople to get out of bed, washing, dressing, getting to work, cooking meals, eating,seeing friends, caring for families and being part of the community.

Healthwatch Suffolk will use your feedback to help it understand the issues that peopleface when accessing care at home and what needs to be explored in detail as part of itsdeveloping project. As the health and care watchdog for Suffolk, it can use the things thatpeople share to shape, influence and improve care to our county’s most vulnerableresidents.

We held our AGM followed by a mostinteresting talk “Being a Woman RacingDriver & Racing at Le Mans” by CeliaStevens on 11 October. She talked of herexperience of racing historic cars threetimes at Le Mans Classic, once atNuremburg & all over the UK. And she isstill racing !On Wednesday 8th November EventOrganiser Eve Regelous, who workedclosely with Harrods, will give a glimpseof behind the scenes of day to day life inthis world famous company including itshistory.We do not have a speaker meeting inDecember but have our popular Christmaslunch at the Constable Hall on Wednesday6 December. This is always a popularevent and so early booking is advised.Our main purpose is to encourage lifelonglearning for those who are no longer in fulltime employment and emphasis is alwaysplaced on making learning active and funas well as helping in developingfriendships. Kennys SESAW newsHe’s done it again! While I was meeting myPublic at our Autumn Fair, Ollie (the Black) Catwrote our news last month. Mind you, I feelsorry for him now, he has a big abscess on hisface and is under house arrest! Anyway, thankyou to all that attended our Great Bentley sale.It was lovely to meet new and establishedsupporters and over £2500 was raised.

We all enjoy an early morning run but those ofus who are “vertically challenged” come in witha damp undercarriage! And I don’t mean justdogs, Rupert the pig squeals in disgust whenthe grass is wet. You should have seenButton’s face when the little porker first arrivedand chased her around Mum’s legs. Ourresident Norfolk Terrier was not impressed!

Mum says we have many cats and kittensincluding eight year old Izzy and Chloe who arelooking for a home together for the second time.They were rehomed by SESAW years ago butunfortunately their owner passed away. Theyare a friendly pair although Izzy is very shy.

The volunteers are holding a Christmas Fair atThe Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX,10-3pm on 19th November. There will be lotsof festive things on offer plus lots of prizes inour big raffle. Mary is busy preparing her everpopular Tombola which never disappoints thewinners.

Remember to keep your pets safe duringbonfire season. I can’t impress upon youenough how scary fireworks are to all animals,including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.
