STAD VAN BURENThe “City of Neighbors” is a multi-family housing complex built on the interplay of public and private spaces between two units that are linked together. The units face each other and begin to share their experiences of the public spaces through the glass facade, while the most private spaces, concealed and opaque, reach out and bind the units together.

COLUMBUS THEATRE OF JUSTICEThe Columbus Theatre of Justice is a court house that puts the judicial system on display and embodies the theatrics of it. The sweeping glass curtain peels away from the main structure to reveal the court rooms and act an introduction to the building. Through the use of an intricate circulation system two interior facades, the experience delves deeper and gives a closer look at the court rooms , the supporting program, and the people involved. By maintaining a distance and with the vast amount of program, a sense of privacy can be maintained in the program because of repetition and over stimulating.

ALL STARAll Star is a unique shoe store that pays homage to one of the most iconic shoes in the world, the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star. Rather than attempting to overcome the limitations of its narrow site, All Star emphasizes them to create multi-level linear progression. The path has a natural hierarchy and becomes a means of telling the history and evolution of the shoe the store is named after.

THE NEW GROUNDThe challenge of The New Ground was developing a design school in a dense urban setting of Shanghai. Because the site was a historic district, destroying the existing buildings was not an option. To address this complication, the school is raised 60’ into the air literally creating a new ground plane above the site. Because of the large amount of program required for the school, the school is divided up into corresponding parts to still allow light to the buildings below it. To further increase the amount of light the site get, the fenestration for the school is aligned and derived from all the voids that exist below. Lastly, a series of paths unify the four parts of the school and extend slightly beyond in the direction of other related locales across the greater Shanghai area. Despite being perceived as a separate entity, the school continually establishes connections with the site.

102ND ST FIELD HOUSEIn 2010, The Parsons Design Workshop Team was given the task of transforming the a derelict fi eld house into a usable community space. As a landmarked structure, an aesthetic needed to be maintained on the exterior which produced a simple, but elegant facade. The interior had more freedom for design and the themes of “lightly touching” and “reveals” were the driving forces.

SCALEPORTAlbany is a city largely dominated by a commuter population and an immense amount of infrastructure has been put in place to handle this. Unfortunately this has created drastic jumps in scale in the downtown area between the highway and the street level rendering the proximal areas unusable.

The issue of scale is an integral part of architecture, but the mixing of varying scales is not always possible or elegant. This is especially evident in the transportation systems of Albany, where cars, buses, and bicycles act on very different scales and where moments of crossing become strenuous.

By developing a multi-modal transportation hub, theses issues of scale can be addressed. Rather than creating that direct interaction of the spaces, a median space is developed based on the common ground of the program, the pedestrian scale. This allows the spaces to maintain their specifi city while remaining connected.

Scaleport resolves the issues of scale and transport within the immediate area, but also begins to ask how these issues can be resolved at the urban scale and shows another possibility for architecture to have a profound affect on the city.
