The pain experienced by women in labour varies between individuals and is effected by many factors. For some women the pain may be constant and severe in the lower back, especially in cases of a persistent posterior baby. This method of pain relief is effective at relieving severe continuous back pain in labour but does not relieve any other labour pain.

Inclusion Criteria

Women at term (37-42 weeks) experiencing continuous lower back pain in labour.

This method is only effective at relieving severe back pain but has a 90% success rate.

There is no effect on the baby.

You will experience an intense burning/ stinging sensation for up to 20 seconds following the injections.

The pain relief will occur within 1-3mins.

The injections can be repeated numerous times during labour.

Following the injections you should refrain from touching, rubbing, massaging or applying pressure to the injection sites for 30mins.

Other methods of pain relief can be used in conjunction with sterile water injections.

The procedure

You will be asked to sit in a position that is comfortable but with easy access to your lower back.

The four injection sites will be marked.

Two midwives will simultaneously and rapidly inject 0.1ml-0.4mls of sterile water intradermally (just under the skin) into each site to raise a small bleb.

The injections will be administered as quickly as possible to reduce the time and effect of the stinging sensation.

Following the procedure Your midwife will assess the level of discomfort at 10 mins, 30mins, 60mins, 90mins and 120mins following the procedure.
