RichardAbelMichaelJ.ConnellProfessorofLaw,EmeritusUCLALawSchoolRichardAbelteachesTorts,LegalProfession,andLawandSocialChange.Overtheyears,hehasbeenpresidentoftheLawandSocietyAssociation,editorofAfricanLawStudiesandoftheLaw&SocietyReview,andmemberoftheeditorialboardsofotherjournalsinthelawandsocietyfieldintheUnitedStates,Europe,andAustralia.HeparticipatedinthefoundingoftheConferenceonCriticalLegalStudiesin1977andhelpedorganizethemeetingon"LawandRacism:TheSoundsofSilence."AtUCLA,hehasbeenfacultycoordinatorforthePublicInterestLawProgram.ProfessorAbelspenttwoyearsafterlawschoolreadingAfricanlawandlegalanthropologyinLondon,andthenayearoffieldworkinKenyastudyingthewaysin

Hon.SimeonAcobaJustice,SupremeCourtofHawaiiAssociateJusticeSimeonR.Acoba,Jr.wasappointedtotheHawaiʻiSupremeCourtinMay2000.Priortohisappointmenttothesupremecourt,hewasanassociatejudgeattheIntermediateCourtofAppealsfrom1994‐2000,acircuitcourtjudgefrom1980‐1994handlingbothcivilandcriminalcases,andaperdiemdistrictcourtjudgefrom1979‐1980.HecurrentlyservesasChairoftheHawaiʻiAccesstoJusticeCommission.JusticeAcobareceivedaBachelorofArtsdegreefromtheUniversityofHawaiʻiwithhonors,andhisJurisDoctoratefromtheNorthwesternUniversitySchoolofLaw.Hewasadmittedtopracticelawinthefederaland

CommunityServiceAward”fromtheSanDiegoBarAssociationin2004andthe“EStanleyConantAward”fromtheBoardofDirectorsofDefenseProgramsinSanDiegoin2002.TheNationalCoalitionforHomelessVeteranspresentedhimwiththe“UnsungHeroAward”in2000,theVietnamVeteransofSanDiegopresentedhimthe“VolunteerAttorneyoftheYear”in1990,andthePublicDefenderAssociationpresentedhimthe“CommunityServiceAward”in1999.TheAmericanBarAssociationpresentedthe“HodsonAward”totheSanDiegoCountyOfficeofthePublicDefenderforoutstandingservicebyapublicagencywiththeHomelessCourt.HeisaFellowwithAshokaInnovatorsforthePublicworkingfulltimetofurtherreplicationoftheHomelessCourtProgram.HeisaformerChairandcurrentSpecialAdvisortotheABACommissiononHomelessnessandPoverty.

GaryBlasiProfessorofLaw,UCLALawSchoolGaryBlasijoinedtheUCLAfacultywithadistinguished20‐yearrecordofpublicinterestpractice.Heteachesclinicalandpublicinterestlawyeringcourses,includingFactInvestigationinComplexMattersandClinicalSeminarinPublicPolicyAdvocacy.Heisoneofthefoundingandcorefacultyofthelawschool'suniqueDavidJ.EpsteinPrograminPublicInterestLawandPolicy.Hepractices,teaches,conductsresearchandwritesaboutadvocacyonbehalfofchildreninsubstandardschools,homelessfamiliesandindividuals,lowincometenants,lowwageworkers,andvictimsofdiscrimination.Hehasreceivednumerousawardsfordistinctioninthefieldofpublicinterestlawandforprovidinglegalservicestothepoor.In2007,hewasnamedoneofthetop100lawyersinCalifornia,citedasthe"go‐tolawyerforcommunitygroupsinneedofadvice."

ProfessorBlasi'sresearchdrawsoncognitivescienceandsocialpsychologytobetterunderstandhowlawyersacquireexpertise,howpeopleunderstandthecausesofproblemslikehomelessnessorpoverty,howadvocatescanbestdealwiththeconsequencesofracialandotherstereotypes,andhowlargebureaucraciescanbetterrespondtotheneedsofpoorpeopleandpeoplelivingwithdisabilities.HehasalsoservedasDirectoroftheUCLAInstituteforResearchonLaborandEmployment,whichsupportsresearchandeducationonissuescriticaltoworkingpeople,taughtatStanfordandlecturedatuniversitiesinEngland,Australia,Brazil,HongKongandChina.ProfessorBlasibecamealawyerwithoutattendinglawschool.AftergraduatestudyatHarvard,wherehewasaGraduatePrizeFellowandWoodrowWilsonFellow,ProfessorBlasiservedasalegalapprenticeinacommunitylawofficeintheEchoParkneighborhoodofLosAngeles,wherehealsobeganhispractice.In1978,hejoinedtheLegalAidFoundationofLosAngeles,wherehecoordinatedadvocacyincludingcomplexlitigationintheareasofhousing,welfare,homelessness,andredevelopment.

increasedthenumberofmajorcasesfiledbytheProject,byprobonocounsel,andthroughco‐counselingrelationshipswithothercivilrightsorganizations.In2003,workingincoalitionwiththeAsianPacificAmericanLegalCenter,HernánsuccessfullyinitiatedandsettledalargefraudactionagainstaToyotadealershiponbehalfoftwelveMandarin‐speakingclients.Theattendantpublicityandsettlementofthislawsuitservedasthecatalystforlegislation(the“WondriesBill”)thatexpandedthescopeofconsumerprotectionsinCaliforniaforlimited‐Englishproficientcommunities.Thatsameyear,Hernánco‐chairedasuccessful10‐dayjurytrialagainstaSouthLosAngelesslumlordandplayedaprominentroleinthecoalitionoflegalandgrassrootsactiviststhatpushedthroughthepassageofLosAngeles’Anti‐PredatoryLendingOrdinance.In2006,Hernánco‐counseledwithJonesDayinobtaininga$2.5millionjudgmentagainsttwoconartistswhoswindleda93‐year‐oldclientoutofhishome.Morerecently,Hernánhasbeeninstrumentalinlitigatingandsettlingthenationally‐publicized“homelessdumping”caseagainstKaiserPermanente.ThroughhisworkatPublicCounsel,Hernánhasquicklybecomeawidely‐knownexpertinconsumerlaw.Hernánmakesfrequentmediaappearancesonissuesfacinglow‐incomecommunitiesandisregularlyaskedtoconsultonpotentiallegislation.In2004,HernánwasnamedbytheDailyJournalasoneofCalifornia’sTop20lawyersundertheageof40.Hernán’slong‐timecommitmenttosocialjusticeandservingthepoorthroughprobonohashelpedhimtoforgestrongandextensiveconnectionstotheLosAngeleslegalcommunity.Bysupervisingandmanagingaheavydocketofprobonocases,Hernánhasworkedwithcountlesspartnersandassociatesatdozensofmajorlawfirmsandlegalnonprofits.HernánhasservedontheBoardoftheLosAngelesCenterforLawandJustice,andcurrentlyservesasoneoftheVice‐ChairsoftheBoardoftheCaliforniaReinvestment

SydWhalleyExecutiveDirectorWesternCenteronLaw&PovertySydhasbeenworkingatWCLPin2005asafostercarebenefitsadvocate,andin2006wasnamedExecutiveDirector.Longbeforebeginningherlegalcareer,Sydspent15yearsasapediatriconcologynurse,includingdesigninganddevelopingtheBoneMarrowTransplantProgramatChildren’sHospitalLosAngeles.Forthepast25years,SydhasservedasanAssistantClinicalProfessoratUCLA’sSchoolofNursing.Throughoutherdistinguishednursingcareer,Sydmanagedandmentoredlargenursingstaffsanddevelopedandimplementedtrainingandprofessionaldevelopmentprogramsforthem.Shehasbeennationally
