Opening Hours

• Term-time– Monday - Thursday 8.00 to 21.30

– Friday 8.00 to 19.00

(limited service between 8.00 and 9.00)

– Saturday 9.30 to 17.00

– Sunday 14.00 to 19.00 (limited service)

• Vacation– Monday - Friday 9.00 to 17.00

Membership and borrowing

• University staff card is also used as library card

• Visit Learning Centre to ensure card is validated for use and collect PIN number

• Machines for borrowing returning and renewing available at the Main Desk and Loans Counter

Loan periods

• Loan stock– 4 week loan – standard loan period– 7 day loan- high usage books, videos,

CDs & DVDs– 1 day loan for high usage books– Journals

• Some reference, others 1 day loan

• Reference • May not be taken out of the Library

Borrowing allocation

• University Staff– 25, including no more than:

• 5 one day loan items

-includes 1 day books and journal issues

• 10 audiovisual items

Library catalogue

• Library catalogue – Library catalogue available on PCs in the Learning Centre

and across the network from the Library webpages– Access via Internet from outside the university– Search for a huge range of resources including books,

journals, DVDs, ebooks, journal articles etc.– You can often link direct to the full text of books and

articles

• Stock arranged according to Dewey decimal system

Special collections and locations

• Examples of special collections in the library– York Hospital Health Library

– Staff Development Resource area on 2nd floor

– RE Centre – Collection of religious education materials on 2nd floor

– Languages Resource Centre – Collection of modern foreign language materials on 2nd floor

– Stack – closed access store of low usage materials – to use books from the stack place a hold

– Oversize – 2 sequences of larger books: 001-699 on first floor, 700-999 on second floor

Renewals and holds

• Renewals– Select ‘Library account’ from the library homepage– Type your User ID (barcode number from your staff card) and PIN

number (ask at library desk)– Renew 4 week and 1 week loans up to 7 times

• Holds or reservations– May be placed on items on loan and on items available in the

library– May be placed on 4 week and 1 week loans, but not on 1 day

loans– When available, you are notified by email– Kept on the holds shelf for 8 days before being returned to

shelves

Fines

• Fines– Apply to all registered borrowers– 4 week loan - 10p per day – 7 day loans - 50p per day – 1 day loan journals & books - £1 per day– Fines of £10.00 or over lead to block on

borrowing

• Access electronic resources via Library website– Full text journal articles via e-journal finder

– Electronic books

– Databases to search for resources

– Digital archive to provide access to University materials and research

Inter-library loans

• Inter-library loans service

– PhD students & university staff- 20 ILLs per year, from August to July

– Includes both books and journal articles.

SCONUL access to other libraries

• SCONUL scheme– Open to academic staff and PhD students– Allows borrowing rights at over 150 higher education

institutions– Apply to join at the Information and Help desk in the

Fountains Learning Centre and collect SCONUL card

Information skills and reading lists

• Your Subject librarian (called Academic Support Librarians at York St John)

• Information skills sessions for students at all levels can be arranged with the Academic Support Librarians

Ordering resources for the library

• Budgets are allocated to the library to spend on each faculty – liaise with the Academic Support Librarian for your faculty

• Ordering resources page which includes a link to an online acquisitions form

• Orders for new periodicals should be submitted to the Academic Support Librarians for consideration.

Scanning service

• Scanning service provides access to book chapters and journal articles via individual modules on Blackboard

• Copyright rules mean that only one chapter per book or one article per journal issue is permitted per module
