Trinity College Foundation Studieshas been an iPad College since 2010 when

we held our first 1:1 trial. Since then we have developed our approaches to

teaching and learning with flexibility in mind. There are many ways you can choose

to use your iPad to enhance your teaching experience, and to engage students in

your classes who are all equipped with iPads. There are no strict guidelines about

what you should or should not do, but consider the opportunities to engage

students who have access to online resources, and can interact with you and one

    another outside of

    class easily.

    One area Trinity is

    currently exploring is

    using the Google

    Apps suite of tools to

    facilitate group writing

    and imp rove the

    formative feedback

    teachers can provide for students.

If you are new to, or unfamiliar with the idea of teaching with a class full of Internetconnected students, there is really no reason to be overly concerned. At TCFS we

began our iPad program with the ambition to open up the ways of teaching,

learning, and creating for students, and we see it much more as an opportunity

than a problem. Regardless of how we as individual teachers see our classrooms -

separated from the outside world or an intrinsic part of it - students will always

bring their connected lives with them into their learning spaces. It is part of how

the world works. But this can be an opportunity.

The connected and online social world is intrinsic to students lives, and as

teachers we have a role in guiding students to understand how to engage with the

digital world safely, productively, and to their advantage. So a useful approach is

to provide opportunities for students to use the Internet for research, but teach

them about evaluating and verifying sources.

Other useful questions to explore with students might be, How much personal

information is too much to share in social networks? When and how do they needto credit sources of images, information, ideas? What are some ways to manage

and regulate their use of and engagement with social media to allow time for study

and reading? Come along to PD sessions to engage with your colleagues on these

questions, to share ideas, advice, useful activities and projects that enhance

students capacity to be critical users of digital technologies.

    iPad Basics

Here are some brief hints for working with the basiciPad apps which students are using at TCFS. These

hints will guide you in using your iPad to save time,

and organise classroom materials. Not all

departments will use these basic applications.

Speak to your colleages and subject leaders for

    advice about discipline specific apps.

    PAGES, KEYNOTE AND NUMBERS FILES

    1. Name your Pages and Keynote files with

useful titles, so you know how to find them

    again.

    2. Work with Templates on Keynote to

produce a good result for class

    presentations. Dont change templates.

    3. Create folders for your files, perhaps one

for each subject you are taking. Createfolders by moving one file icon over

another, and then naming the folder.

    4. Pages CAN be saved as WORD documents

to share with a PC, and Keynote files can

be saved as a PowerPoint. Numbers can

be saved as Excel. All apps will allow you to

    create a .pdf copy.

    5. Backup your iWorks documents on iCloud,or in an account such as Dropbox or

Google Docs. You can save Pages and

Keynote files straight to Dropbox from the

apps. (See the movie for details about how

    to do this.)

    6. There are many features of Pages and

Keynote which allow you to create amazing

    graphs, and present information beautifully.

    classes using the file manager.

    2. When you download documents and

worksheets, save them into the correct

    subject folder.

    3. Rename files for easy identification. Use

    dates also, to prevent confusion.

    4. GoodReader can store and display many

kinds of files, Word, Pages, Keynote,

PowerPoint, PDF, audio and video files.

    5. Only PDF documents can be annotated

    with underlining, shapes, arrows,

    highlighting, notes, and freehand drawings.

IF YOU HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT STUDENT DISTRACTION, REMIND

    STUDENTS OF THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES.

The expectations student of the iPad is consistent with the principles that apply to the

Student Code of Conduct and Trinity College User Rights and Responsibilities

Statement, which can be viewed online at

Student Code of Conduct iPads Terms and Conditions of Use

These principles indicate that the iPad must not be used for illegal or commercial

purposes, it must not be used for cyber bullying, and both use in the classroom and

downloading should be primarily for educational purposes. Internet access will bemonitored for excessive use, but we do not monitor your activity. Students are

expected to behave responsibly in their use of the iPad and follow guidelines from

their teachers and other authorised Trinity College staff.

    DEALING WITH DISTRACTION

Many teachers find benefit in working with students at the start of the year of mutually

agreed behaviour codes, which students themselves suggest (in discussion with their

teachers) and which can then serve as a point of reminder.

    BEHAVIOUR IN LECTURES AND TUTORIALS

TCFS lecturers and tutors expect attentive behaviour, courtesy and respect from all

students, at all times. Your iPad is first and foremost an educational tool, and should

not be used during class time for personal social networking, or for playing games, or

watching videos. This can be done between classes.

In addition, students should not record or film their teachers or fellow students using

their iPad microphone or camera, without prior permission.

    Section 3

ALL STUDENTS HAVE AN ORIENTATIONSESSION ON THESE TOPICS:

    1. Trinity College sees you as an adult. Our

classrooms and lecture theatres are places

    of learning, not socialising online.

    2. Your lecturers and tutors respect you and

expect you to respect them in return. They

will have di!erent ways of working with

students, and you need to adapt and

    respect di!erent expectations.

    3. Bring your iPad to class fully charged every

day. You cannot charge during class time.

    4. Do not film or record your lecturers or

tutors, or your class mates WITHOUT first

asking permission. This is an invasion of

    privacy.

    5. If everyone takes responsibility for theirown actions, and makes learning a priority,

the learning experience will be better for

    everyone.

    6. Treat others how you would like to be

    treated.

    7. Watching videos in lectures can be

distracting to your classmates. Please be

    respectful.

    What are students responsibilities?

There are a number of times throughout the year when you might have to updateyour password, or download new operating systems, and app updates. It is

important that you keep your iPad software up to date also.

The iPad you have will itself be updated every two years. It will help if you have

your iPad backed up to either iCloud, or to a computer in iTunes. If you do not

back up your iPad regularly, you will have to go through often lengthy and complex

updating procedures before you can transfer to a new iPad. Back up all the things.

TCOLE, the Trinity College Online Learning Environment, is a LearningManagement System (LMS) used in Foundation Studies and Young Leaders

Summer Schools programs. TCOLE runs on the Moodle platform.

What is a TCOLE Course? Each TCOLE 'course' is a unique subject/intake

combination. As TCFS subjects are taught over several intakes, each subject will

have several separate courses in TCOLE at any one time. At the end of a program,

courses are rolled over to be used as the basis for the next intake's courses.

Students are automatically enrolled in their TCOLE courses once their timetablesare finalised. This might not be until late in the lecture only week of Orientation.

As a Learning Management System, TCOLE can deliver complete courses to

students through collections of documents, web links, embedded videos, iBooks,

and links to Echo360 Lecture recordings. Interactive activities such as quizzes,

wiki tasks, discussion forums and surveys can be included to support and enrich

learning. Foundation Studies students can download course materials to their

iPads and store local versions for annotating, note-taking and revision.

Teachers can get support for using TCOLE and Moodle by exploring theextensive

    online documentation provided by Moodle.

You can also contact the eLearning Coordinator, or the ITS databases manager.

    Section 1

    SOME TCOLE TIPS

    1. A guide to using TCOLE is located in a

    custom TCOLE course called TCOLE

DEMO. All sta!are students in this course.

    2. At the bottom of each page in TCOLE is a

link to Moodle Docs for this page. This

link will take you to the relevant help page

    in Moodle online support documentation.

    3. TCOLE is a Moodle Learning ManagementSystem. Moodle is used at many Australian

    Universities, including Monash.

    4. Play around in the Sta!Playground course

to practice activities and try out forums

    away from student view.

    5. Switch your role to student to see if your

course materials look the way you want

    them to.

    6. The link to lecture recordings is in TCOLE,

it is called Echo 360 ALP.

Apple Mac EnvironmentAll Trinity College sta

    "and student computer equipment

is Apple. There are no PCs available, nor are tablets of other brands aside from

iPads supported to be used in teaching. This is a college-wide policy. However,

there are many MS products which can be accessed through the Citrix network,

including specialist applications for Science and Mathematics.

Apple TVMost of the tutorial rooms in the college are, or will soon be, equipped

with Apple TV for wireless projection of iPads, and/or late model

MacBooks.Instructions for using Apple TV with your iPad are provided in eachtutorial room. If the button for Apple TV is not marked on the wall plate, choose

    Computer 2.

ComputersIn Rooms 8 and 9 in Swanston Street, and the Victoria Street building

tutorial rooms, facilities also include a Mac Mini computer and a display. In most

    cases however, the iPad will display all the content you want; can play movies;

access the internet; can be used as an electronic whiteboard (shared); can support

live annotations, and will access and display the Learning Management System.

Before you start teachingin a new classroom, make some time to test the

equipment, and ensure you know how it works. If you have initial problems, ask an

experienced colleague to come with you to troubleshoot.Let ITS know if there are

    persistent faults with the equipment.

    Section 2

    TIPS FOR CLASSROOM AV

    1. In every classroom there is a document

camera, a DVD player or Bluray, and a

flatscreen TV or data projector. The iPad

you have been issued is able to be

projected using either a dongle connected

to a VGA cable, or wirelessly via an Apple

    TV.

    2. If you have persistent, disruptive problems

with the equipment in your teaching

spaces, please log trouble tickets with ITS

so they are aware of the problems and can

    schedule repairs.

    3. Lecture theaters all have a computer, DVD

player, document camera, and an ECHO

360 lecture recording device. However, the

set up is slightly di!erent in each space, so

familiarise yourself with the spaces in

    which you will be teaching.

    4. For advice and guidance using the Echo

360 Lecture capture system, please contact

ITS support or the eLearning team: Jennifer
