Fr. John’s Notes: Second Sunday of ordinary Time Today we begin a stretch of Ordinary Time that will last almost two months. Except for today, all of the Sunday Gospels will be from Saint Matthew, and all, including today, will be about

Jesus’ early public ministry. Let us travel with Jesus these coming weeks as he sets out to proclaim the reign of God, eager to listen and learn what it means to be a disciple. THREE MISSIONS: Our first reading is one of the “servant songs” from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus’ ministry of service. Isaiah’s mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be “a light to the nations” (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identified: it is part of the univer-sal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians. Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrat-ed last Monday, today’s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus “outranks” John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John’s baptism, even though it is he himself who is the Lamb of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Our Mission/Vocation: Through our baptism, God calls us all to live our faith and seek our vocation to become a deacon, priest, religious sister, married or single person. Perhaps God is calling you to the priesthood or consecrated life. Let us have the courage to follow our heart. We are all called to love and serve Him and one another as our true vocation. As we continue to walk in the light of Christ and to serve our Lord with our whole heart, mind and soul, may we be filled with the love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and seek to forgive all who have hurt us. All Catholics are encouraged to: 1. Take time to pray for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. 2. Reflect on our own vocation and strengthen our personal relationship with Christ. 3. Educate our young people about the importance of silent prayer and taking time to truly listen to God's voice in our hearts. 4.Talk about vocations with our family members. 5.Attend Mass every Sunday as a family.

Prayer for Vocations: O Father, you desire all of us to be happy.

Stir up the grace of a religious vocation in the hearts of many men and women.

Grant to them the willingness and generosity to give of themselves, their lives, their time and their

talents to the service of Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord and Savior, and to His Holy Church.

May more men and women go forth as priests, deacons, brothers and sisters to bring the truths of our Catholic faith to all others so that soon they, too, may know You better

and love You more... and serving You, be truly happy. Amen.

Second Sunday of ordinary Time January 15, 2017

Celebrate Life: I am speaking of a tragic spiral of death which includes murder, suicide, abortion, euthanasia. To this list we must add irresponsible practices

of genetic engineering, such as the cloning and use of human embryos for research, which are justified by an illegitimate appeal to freedom, to cultural progress, to the advancement of mankind. When the weakest and most vulnerable members of society are subjected to such atrocities, the very idea of the human family, built on the value of the person, on trust, respect and mutual support, is dangerously eroded. A civiliza-tion based on love and peace must oppose these experiments, which are unworthy of man. Pope John Paul II, Message for the Celebration of the World Day of Peace ( 2001), no. 19
