Bring it into the Light

In John’s Gospel, Jesus teaches often about light and darkness. It is from here that we get the image of Christ as the light of the world, a light that can never be overcome, no matter how deep the darkness of the world might seem at times.

Nicodemus - a Pharisee - comes to Jesus at night, probably because he doesn’t want the other Pharisees to see him meeting with Jesus, whom they dislike. Jesus explains to Nicodemus that people who are evil like to work in the dark where their wickedness can be hidden. They don’t want to be exposed so they do what they can to hide their actions.

On the other hand, people who are trying to live with honesty, integrity, and truthfulness are not afraid to do their work in the light. They don’t feel the need to hide their actions because they have nothing to be afraid of if they are discovered. If we are living in truth, Jesus assures us that we can be confident in letting our works be clearly seen.

This dialogue is an excellent reminder that if we are tempted to keep something secret, we should question our motives. Why do we need to hide our actions or intentions? Is there something we are trying to cover up, and if so, why? St. Ignatius urged people to pay attention to when they were tempted to keep something secret. In such cases, he suggested they intentionally tell someone else about it so as to bring it into the light.

Questions of the Week Are there things you have been tempted to keep

hidden or secret? If so, have you also had an experience of allowing something to “come to the light”? How did that bring you freedom or relief?

Share an experience of a time when someone (you or someone else you know) had the courage to bring to light a troubling situation that needed to be addressed. What happened?

Something to Think About . . .

A touching scene in Dickens' A Christmas Carol has Mrs. Cratchit asking her husband, Bob, "How did Tiny Tim behave in church today?" Bob replies, "As good as gold. And better. He gets thoughtful sitting by himself so much and thinks the strangest thoughts. He told me, coming home, that he hoped the people saw him in church, because he was a cripple. He said, "It might be pleasant for them to recall on Christmas day who it was who make lame beggars walk.'"

Lenten Penance Service This Tuesday, March 16

7:00 PM

Join us in our Parish Lenten Penance Service this, Tuesday, March 16, at 7:00 PM in Church. Please register on line or call the parish office at 630-969-1063. PENANCE IS AN ACTION: Penance's are actions we choose ourselves in order to express our sorrow for sin and our desire to share more fully in the life of Christ. PENANCE IS AN ATTITUDE of sorrow for our sins and a determination to turn to God and away from sin. An attitude of inner conversion, penance reminds us that God comes first in our lives. PENANCE IS A SACRAMENT in which the priest acts for the Church and in the place of Christ to forgive sins. It is also called the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession. The Church obliges Catholics to confess serious (mortal) sins at least once a year.

JOIN US THIS TUESDAY NIGHT!

Stewardship

Our Catholic Faith with Fr. Keith: When was the last time you felt a connection to God? The busyness of suburban daily life often overwhelms our sense of the sacred and spiritual. Just the other day, as I was working in the parish office, I glanced at the clock which blinked back at me 10:37pm. There were no feelings of accomplishment in working late because I realized I had not yet prayed that day, aside from morning Mass. So, I downloaded my daily pray-er podcast and made my way back to the Rectory to try and spend the few remaining minutes of my day with the Lord. This experience is hardly unique to myself. The most important relationship in life is with God. However, do our choices and actions reflect that reality or not? Consider, for a moment, the whole of your day: waking, getting ready in the morning, rushing off to work or school, dinner in the evening, maybe some television before bed, and then repeat again the next day. We are creatures of habit, which works well with good habits. Whatever you spend time on during any given day is probably the ‘idol’ in your life, whether you know (or acknowledge) it or not. Jesus makes it quite clear for us, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Mt 6:12). Treasure, in this case, does not have to be wealth or material possessions. For many of us, the ‘treasure’ that captivates the heart is less of an object and more of a desire or activity. The ‘treasure’ for many teenag-ers is social media which quite often negatively influences thoughts, feelings, and desires. The ‘treasure’ for many adults is not so much wealth, pleasure, power, or honor, but the pursuit of these things whether at work or in relationships. And, the ‘treasure’ for many of the elderly seems to be control, as in holding on to personal autonomy despite the awareness of difficult to accept limitations. Maybe in the Season of Lent, as in this Lent now, God is reminding us to remember Him a little more frequently. We try to be faithful to our penance (prayer, fasting, and almsgiving) as a way to remem-ber Him during the days and weeks before Easter. We can never outdo God in generosity, but it never hurts to try.

This week we take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection to help Jesus in disguise. This collection helps six Catholic agencies to provide relief and support for struggling communities and to work for

peace and reconciliation among our marginalized brothers and sisters here and around the world. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the collection. Learn more about the collection at www.usccb.org/catholic-relief.

We had a great outpouring of support from sponsors, school families, families of school families and parishioners for our first ever Week of Giving. We raised over $100,000.00 that will go to our

school’s operating budget. Our students and staff thank you for your help.

A special thank you for the small, but mighty Committee that put this event together. Their enthusiasm, creativity and energy made this an exciting event, even when none of it was in person!

NEW PARISHIONERS: We are happy to welcome new members to our community, and encourage you to register either in person at the Parish Office, or register online through our website, www.stmarygostyn.org.

BAPTISMS: St. Mary of Gostyn offers baptismal preparation sessions on a monthly basis. If this is your first child, you will need to participate in a baptismal preparation session before you can receive a date for your baby’s Baptism. Parents are the first and primary educators in the practice of the Faith. Godparents play an important role in the faith life of your child. While considering godparents for your child, be aware that at least one must be a baptized and confirmed Catholic who is active in his/her faith. Please call the parish office at 630-969-1063 to register for a preparation class and to schedule a baptismal date.

BECOMING A CATHOLIC: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of welcoming and preparing adults for the Sacraments of Initiation - Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation - for full membership in the Catholic Church. Unbaptized adults, adults baptized in another Christian faith, and baptized Catholics with little or no formal religious education are invited to participate. Please call the Parish Office for further information.

ANNULMENTS: We are available to help anyone who is in need of information about how to apply for an annulment. Please contact the Parish Office at (630)969-1063.

SACRAMENT of ANOINTING: The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is available at regularly scheduled liturgies throughout the year, or by appointment. You may ask the presiding priest before any Mass for an anointing. Communal Anointing Masses are held on the 1st Saturday of the month in August, December and April at the 8:00 AM Mass. The Eucharist will also be brought to those who are ill, upon request. Please notify the Parish Office if members of your family are in the hospital or homebound.

FUNERALS: Arrangements are usually made by the Funeral Home or by a family member. A member of our Bereavement team will meet with you to plan the Funeral Liturgy. Eulogies can be given at the Wake Service, Interment at the Cemetery or at the Funeral Luncheon, but not at the Mass of Christian Burial.

MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least six months in advance to provide ample time for preparation of this sacrament.

RECONCILIATION: Confessions are heard Saturday, 8:30 to 9:30 AM in church. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also available by appointment. Please call the Parish Office (630-969-1063) to arrange to have your confession heard by a priest.
