New Study
Pastor Bonnie will be leading a new study called “What Are We Fighting For” when she returns from her medical leave. It will most likely be on a Sunday afternoon or evening. More information will be coming when that is decided. The Leader Board thought this would be a good study with all the issues facing The United Methodist Church today, there are plenty of theories and opinions about what we should do. Frankly, many of us are weary of the relentless squabbling associated with all the rhetoric. What are we fighting for? This question not only points us to the futility of our disunity but also compels us to consider what we are fighting for—what deserves our greatest intensity and effort as we seek to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ.

Sunday School Summer Recess
The last day of Sunday School for Kids and Youth will be May 20, the week before Memorial Day Weekend. We will be on break for the summer season and resume in the fall. There are some great opportunities to encourage kids and youth in their faith over the summer with VBS and Summer Camps, as well as worshipping at the 9 or 10:30 a.m. services.
Check out Summer Camp
Church Summer camp is a faith power boost! Check out Pictured Rocks website:

We will be collecting special offerings in worship on two Sundays in May, the 6th and 20th. These scholarships will help our youth attend Christian camps this summer. Thank you for your generous support to this mission.
BUILDING UPDATE dollars). As soon as acceptable cost-saving measures are identified and the bids adjusted, the Building Team will select a contractor for the parking lot, with hopes that parking lot construction can begin immediately. The good news is that even if St. Mark’s were to stick with the originally planned size for the expanded parking lot, sufficient funds will still be available through our construction loan with Farmer’s State Bank, to pay for the addition and completion of the parking lot. As of April 22nd, the principle balance on St. Mark’s construction loan is about $450,000, with $127,705 remaining to be billed by Woodruff Construction under the contract for the addition. Thanks to the generosity of the people of St. Mark’s, over $122,000 has been paid on the construction loan principle since the first draw on the loan on December 11, 2017. Thank you for your patience and flexibility during a long hard winter of construction and parking woes. The financial support given and committed to all “On the Corner” capital campaign projects is irrefutable evidence that God has moved many persons to respond to His call and plan for future ministry at St. Mark’s. If you have not yet had the opportunity to put your hands on the rope and help the rest of us “Heave, Ho!,” simply note on your check or envelope that your gift is intended for “On the Corner,” or “Building Expansion.” But to all present and future donors to the “On the Corner” Capital Campaign projects: please remember that donations to the campaign are to be made after and in addition to your support for the general budget expenses of St. Mark’s. Please do not make donations to the capital campaign if doing so reduces your planned gifts to the general budget for St. Mark’s ministries! Our prayer remains: “Lord, what do you want to do through me?” Our motto encourages: “not equal amounts of giving, but an equal sacrifice.” In the love of Christ, Lance Heeren, Chair of St. Mark’s Leader Board & Building Team member
Entering The Home Stretch With the exterior brick work nearing completion, and the finishing touches being put on the upstairs interior, St. Mark’s will soon be able to open the doors to your new building addition! Praise be to God! Work in the lower level is essentially complete. Although the parking lot will not yet be done, it is anticipated that St. Mark’s will be permitted temporary occupancy of the addition by the City sometime before June 1st, once Carl Byers and our architect do a final inspection and agree that our general contractor has satisfactorily completed all aspects of the project. Until then, Woodruff Construction retains possession and control of the construction site, so be patient! Although multiple bids were solicited, St. Mark’s only received two bids for construction of the expanded parking lot. Due to the larger size of the parking lot and the City’s new stringent requirements for storm water mitigation, the Building Team knew the costs of the parking lot would be much higher than originally estimated in 2016. Nevertheless, both bids sent the Team into “sticker shock.” Lisa Burch, St. Mark’s design engineer for the parking lot, and Building Team members are working with the two competing bidders to identify ways to significantly reduce the cost of the parking lot. Possibilities for cost savings being explored include switching from permeable pavers to large underground retention basins (at the risk of forfeiting the $9600 in grant money from the city and county for the pavers and current design), reducing the size of the parking lot at the north end by about 10 parking spaces, and recruiting volunteers from St. Mark’s to plant trees and shrubs, build the rain gardens the City now requires, and regularly water all the new plantings (i.e. tapping into “sweat equity” to save thousands of

Thank You
I want to thank everyone for the prayer I have received. Also to Sue Eppel & Therese Rowell for the wonderful meals they provided us when I got home from the hospital. Sue, that buttermilk bread toasted & topped with peanut butter kept me in breakfast for a lot of days. It tasted so good! Thanks again for your kindness, Jim & Mona Kidwell
