St. Joseph & Most Pure Heart of Mary Parishes September 13, 2015 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time TODAY'S PRAYER WITH THE POPE What will survive of us is love. It may seem odd to begin such a reflection with a quote from a confirmed atheist, the English poet Philip Larkin but there is something striking about the precision and universality of this line that has remained with me, as a catechist, for many years. The role of the catechist begins, of course, at Baptism as we receive our commission to go and bear witness, and continues throughout life as we endeavour to teach, to guide, to explain and, in- deed, to provoke young (and not so young) minds into thought and reflection. We catechists are in a privileged and unusual position in that as we teach the student, so too do we continue to learn; as we preach, so too do we remind ourselves of our obligations and responsibilities. So when we teach we must remember doctrine, we must discuss tradition, we must engender a respect for Scripture, but above all we must love. We must love because that is what we have been taught to do. The Gospels overflow with love. The Sermon on the Mount inspires us to love. The 'New Commandment' compels us to love. Therefore our earthly legacy is love. We will be remembered primarily not for what we have taught but how we make people feel. St. Joseph & Most Pure Heart of Mary ParishesSeptember 13, 2015 Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflections on the ReadingsTwenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time taken

from St. Joseph Sunday Missal.

First Reading Isaiah 50:5-9aThis reading is taken from the third song of the Servant

of Yahweh. As memtioned at the feast of the Baptism of theLord, it is not clear whom the inspired writer had in mindwhen he composed these four songs describing the idealServant (Son) of God. Is he a collective person: Israel, God'speople? Is he a king of the past or the Messiah (anointedking) to come? In any case, the Christian community appliedthese hymns very early to Jesus.

The song used today introduces the Gospel theme onthe necessity of taking up our cross and following the LordJesus who suffered and died for us. "I fell into distress andsorrow, and I called upon the name of the Lord, "O Lord, save my life".

Second Reading James 2:14-18James teached that faith without good works is useless.Real Christian charity, going out of your way to help theother, may require sacrifice that we should not shun, asthe other Bible readings tell us.

Gospel Mk 8:27-35Mark, writing 40 years after our Lord's resurrection, time

and again has Jesus imposing silence on others, sometimesabout his miracles and other times (as here) about the factthat he is the Messiah. This represents a literary device thatMark uses to teach that Jesus' real Messiahship was fullyrevealed only by his death and resurrection.

In this tradition as Mark related it, Peter cannot combinethe idea of suffereing with that of Messiahship. Jesus cor-rects him in clear language and teaches all Christians abouttaking up our cross and following in his steps. We shouldthink of this when things do not go our way and pray forstrength.
