REFLECT

What does faith and religion do for us? Ultimately, they remind

us of some truths we conveniently forget: we are created by a

loving God, we have imperfections, we sin, we need to be

forgiven, we have a mission and a purpose, it’s not just about us,

and we hunger for the joy of salvation. These are human truths

that are not dependent upon whether we like them. Ignoring

them places us on the paths of comfort and satisfaction as we

blindly pursue the busyness and superficiality of our empty lives.

Instead of pursuing supernatural and lasting pleasure, we choose

things that are easier and quicker to obtain: sex, drugs, travel,

houses, cars, fame, popularity, self-achievement and satisfaction,

physical enjoyment, and the like.

We may also find ourselves falling victim to more negative

responses to what life brings us: anger, envy, lust, pride,

gluttony, greed, and apathy. Human hearts can become so

hardened to the truth that violence becomes the response of

first choice. Being a Christian is hard! Yet, as Pope Francis

reminds us, the Church needs to be a field hospital that has to be

prepared to provide people with the remedy they need. What

we need is Jesus Christ. The Church, with all of the glory of the

sacraments, exists to help make Christ present and real for us.

Once we find Christ, we find joy. Joy is a matter of the heart that

is beyond pleasure and happiness. It is not found in some

earthly satisfaction, only in Christ.

Once we accept that we are destined to be in Christ, then we will

discover eternal life. Namely, “that they should know you, the

only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.” It is

easy to conveniently forget truth and pursue illusions immediately

within our grasp, but at what price? A man celebrating 60 years

of marriage remarked that it took so much effort and so many

attempts to convince his wife that they were meant to be to-

gether. Even his friends told him he was foolish. He easily could

have given up and pursued other interests. He chose to persevere

and is so grateful that he made that choice because he now has a

pearl of great price. Do we see a value in persevering in our faith

regardless of the cost? If we don’t take the risk, we could lose

more than we know.

2020 ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL

The 2020 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal is more important now

than ever. Growing in Faith, Giving in Love is how we can all

make an impact in the lives of so many of our fellow brothers

and sisters.

We invite all parishioners to make a pledge online, by mail, or

bring their Appeal donation to their parish’s rectory. To learn more or to make your gift today, please visit the Appeal website

at www.archdioceseofhartford.org.

All funds contributed to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal are used exclusively for the purposes outlined in the Appeal literature, which can be found at https://archdioceseofhartford.org/appeal/.

No Appeal funds are ever used for legal fees or settlements.

RESOURCES TO HELP BRING

FAITH HOME AND THE FAMILY CLOSER Compiled for you by The Catholic Telegraph

With kids out of school, Masses and religious education classes

cancelled, you may feel cut off or overwhelmed with how to con-

tinue to teach and share the beauty and joy of the Catholic faith

within your home. This time at home is a wonderful

opportunity to pray and grow together as a family. Here are 4

fun resources to help you and your family keep the faith-learning

going at home!

1. Pray More Novenas (praymorenovenas.com): Want to pray

together as a family, but not sure how? Pray More Novenas

sends daily emails that include prayers for novenas around

saintly feast days. Pray the prayer together as a family, and

include your own intentions.

2. Catholic All Year (catholicallyear.com): This website is headed

up by a Catholic mom of many who has some children in school,

and homeschools others. She runs a blog that provides great

Catholic resources for parents (and practical support and

advice). She also has a shop where you can purchase digital

downloads of Catholic booklets by month ($5). Booklets contain

prayers, blessings and Bible readings relevant to that month’s

liturgical calendar and saints’ feast days.

3. Catholic Mom (catholicmom.com): Articles of support for

Catholic parents? Check. Podcast? Check. Catholic Movie

Reviews? Check. This site is extensive, comprehensive and

provides a wealth of resources for moms, dads, and children

alike. Their Sunday Gospel activities are a particular favorite!

Download Gospel readings, coloring pages, lesson plans, Mass

worksheets and puzzles - all for free!

4. Katie Warner (katiewarner.com): Katie’s website provides a

wealth of resources for parents and children alike - from free

e-books and bulletin inserts (or home printouts as current times

demand), to a supportive Facebook community and “cheat

sheets” to help make family prayer easier.

OFFICES CLOSED Please note that both Holy Family Church and St. Bernard Church offices will be closed on Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day.

Stay well and continue to check the bulletin, Facebook, and our website (sjjenfield.org) for updates.

THANK YOU

St. Jeanne Jugan Parishioners

In February of this year, the SBS Playground Committee sold raffle tickets to raise funds for a safe playground for the St. Bernard School students. St. Jeanne Jugan Parishioners were very generous and bought many raffle tickets. The raffle

drawing was held on March 1st. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic followed immediately after and the “thank you”

letter below did not make it into the bulletin in a timely manner.

Please take a moment to read the letter and know that your caring of and generosity towards our school and the students

who benefit from it has not gone unnoticed.

Dear St. Jeanne Jugan Parishioners,

On behalf of the entire St. Bernard School Community, we would like to say thank you for your unwavering support and generosity in helping us raise funds for our future playground. There are not enough words to describe how amazed and grateful we are for your generosity. We are so appreciative for your consistent presence and participation in our

school community.

Because of your generosity and support, our raffle fundraising event in February was a huge success. This would not be possible without your help and without you, getting a playground for our school would not be possible! We are getting

close to our goal and the SBS Playground Committee will be doing one more fundraiser which will be a legacy brick fundraiser. Our goal is to raise the remainder of what is required to complete the landscape of this project. We will be reaching out to our community for financial support once this fundraiser kicks off. Information on the legacy bricks will

be coming soon!!

We would also like to congratulate our Playground Raffle Ticket winners. Congratulations to, Melissa Schoolcraft our

1st prize winner, Jen Tiroletto our 2nd prize winner and Diane Kadzik our 3rd prize winner.

Thank you to everyone who supported our Playground Raffle. Together we raised over $17,000 which includes prize

deductions! Our school becomes a better place every day when people like you are there to lend a hand!

We appreciate your “dreaming” along with the students and families at St. Bernard School. Thank you very much for your kindness and support and thank you for sharing your blessings.

STEUBENVILLE EAST 2020

Steubenville East 2020 has been cancelled.

Deposits paid for this year's trip will be applied to the 2021 Steubenville East Youth Conference as LifeTeen will not be issuing refunds. The tentative dates for Steubenville East 2021 are July 16th - 18th and will be held at the University of Rhode Island.

Life Teen President/CEO Randy Raus shared this message: “Please take great care of yourself and your loved ones – nothing is more important than your health, safety, and sanctity.

Mother Mary, pray for us!”

Please contact Miss Fitz at [email protected] with any questions.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Do you have a green thumb, like to be outside, have some free time on your hands and are looking for a way to help others? The Little Sisters of

the Poor at St. Joseph’s Residence are looking for

volunteers to come out and take care of some of the

gardens around the home. Please call Sister Frances at 860-881-0782 to offer your gardening services and help

keep the gardens at St. Joseph’s Residence

beautiful for the residents and the Sisters.

Compassionate and Loving Father,

In the face of confusion and concern

impart to us the calm of your presence. In You allow us to find hope and healing.

Be with those who serve the sick and give them Your caring hands.

Be with those who lead and give them Your Spirit of wisdom.

Be with those who have fallen ill and give them Your comforting heart. Wrap your arms around our world and hold us in your love.

Allow us at this time of trial to then serve as instruments

of that love to all we meet.

We ask this in Your Name. Amen

BEWARE OF SCAMS

Some parishes have noted an increase in scam

attempts directed toward their parishioners. In

these scams, a call, text, or email is sent appearing to

come from the priest and requesting that the

individual send money to a certain location/account

or purchase gift cards whose serial numbers are

then forwarded along to the “priest.” Often, the

phone number or email address used appears as if

it might be coming from the priest but is, in fact,

fake. Please know that our parish would NOT

request donations in this way and that any offerings

to the parish should be made only through the

parish website, online giving page, parish office,

mailed-in envelopes, or other official channels

utilized by our parish.
