MARRIAGE MATTERS In a marital relationship, forgiveness removes barriers and rebuilds bridges. It opens doors that were closed. It turns spouses back toward each other.

It reconnects them and lets the life of the relationship flow again. When this happens, peace returns and happiness springs once more because husband

and wife feel in their relationship the presence of God. Does your relationship need new life through forgiveness? John Bosio – Happy Together: the Catholic Blueprint for a Loving Marriage, © 2008

We thank you, O God, for the love you have implanted in our hearts.

May it always inspire us to be kind in our words, considerate of feelings, and concerned for each other’s needs and wishes.

Help us to be understanding and forgiving of human weaknesses and failings. Increase our faith and trust in You and may

Your prudence guide our life and love. Bless our marriage, O God, with peace and happiness and make our love fruitful for

Your glory and our joy both here and in eternity. Amen.

Reflection…….. • The Scriptures are a matter of life and death.

Know them! • If you want to be a Christian, embrace change. • The saints feared sin more than death. • Conversion ought to be a daily occurrence.

THE GIFT OF YOUR PRAYER IS APPRECIATED The children in the GIFT Sacrament Preparation Program will be receiving their First Communion next Saturday and celebrating along with their parents who have also attended many sessions and retreats with them. Fundamental to us as Christians is our belief

that Jesus Christ really died on the cross, that

he was truly raised from the dead, and that

he will return at the end of time as he

promised. It is clear from today's Gospel

reading that the risen Jesus was not a

disembodied spirit, or an illusion of the grief-

stricken disciples. On that first Easter the

disciples, as witnesses to Jesus' death, were

overwhelmed with joy to see him risen to new

life. When Jesus appeared among them he

told them he was no ghost, and to prove his

reality invited them to touch his hands and

feet. Then he asked for a piece of baked fish

and ate it in front of them. After this

reassurance Jesus went on to explain to them

once more how his death and resurrection

were foretold in the scriptures. At this point

he did not pose complicated questions to test

their understanding; instead, he gave them a

task: to preach repentance and forgiveness of

sins "to all the nations, beginning from

Jerusalem" (Acts 24:49). Stop and think.

This is not "Give a few hours of your time,

and we'll consider you've done your part."

What Jesus was giving them was an all-

consuming, life-long mission. They were his

chosen followers, his disciples, but now the

time for learning was over. They must

become apostles, the ones sent on a mission.

Every time we come together to celebrate the

Eucharist, we are offered the love of God

through word and sacrament. We are

reminded of God's saving deeds and

wonderful promises, and we are given food

for the journey. Finally, we are urged to go

forth to love and serve the Lord. What

mission is Christ calling you to fulfill, that

only you can do? Copyright (c) 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

HE IS REAL For the Ride Home

Third Sunday of Easter April 22, 2012

SCRIPTURE • Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away (Acts 3:19) • ...relieve me when I am in distress; have pity on me, and hear my prayer! (Psalm 4:2) • He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world. (1 John 2:2) repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name (Luke 24:47) REFLECTION • Is there anything in your past that you have not forgiven? • Is there anything that you are not willing to forgive? • Is there anything that you are not willing to forgive yourself? • If Jesus died and rose to forgive sins, what are you not able to forgive? • Do you avoid all question of sin and forgiveness by not ever thinking about it? Now let us face the fact that our culture is one which is geared to help us evade any need to face this inner silent self. We live in a state of constant semi attention to the sound of voices, music, traffic, or the generalized noise of what goes on around us all the time. This keeps us immersed in a flood of racket and words, a diffuse medium in which we our consciousness in which our consciousness is half diluted: we are not quite “thinking,” not entirely responding, but we are more or less there. We are not fully present and not entirely absent; not fully withdrawn, yet not completely available. It cannot be said that we are really participating in anything... 1 1Merton, Thomas, Love of Living, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, LLC by the Trustees of the Merton Legacy Trust, 1979 p.36. Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.

Life is beauty, admire it. Life is bliss, taste it.

Life is a dream, realize it. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is a duty, complete it.

Life is a game, play it. Life is costly, care for it. Life is wealth, keep it. Life is love, enjoy it.

Life is mystery, know it.

Life is a promise, fulfill it. Life is sorrow, overcome it.

Life is a song, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it. Life is tragedy, confront it.

Life is an adventure, dare it.

Life is luck, make it. Life is too precious,

do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The season of First Communions is here, and invitations pour in as the new communicants, mostly seven years old, gather extended families for their first reception of the Eucharist. Recently, the celebrations are often on Sundays, in the regular gatherings of the faith community. There, it becomes clear that First Communion is meant to initiate a regular pattern of reception, and that there is to be

a second, third, hundredth, thousandth celebration. Eastern Catholics and Orthodox children follow a different plan, since they are given a taste of the consecrated wine at their baptism as infants.

We Western Christians delay until “the age of reason,” but many years ago, Communion was not for children at all. Twelve to fourteen was the typical time for Roman Catholics to receive for the first time, and in those days this was a transition into the adult world of work and marriage. The custom did not begin to shift to childhood until reforms set in place by Pope St. Pius X began to take hold in the 1920s. If you are going to a First Communion, you can give thanks that the table of the Lord is today open so much more lavishly than before. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © 2011, WLP. All rights reserved.

Copyright © 2011, World Library Publications.
