1 Outline Recent digital copiers store firmware (operation control program) in flash ROM or hard

disk (HD). With these products, updating the firmware is possible in the field by

connecting a personal computer (PC) to the digital copiers. The service support tool

(SST) is a software tool for downloading firmware for the purpose. With some models,

SST is capable of not only downloading firmware but also uploading backup data (to a PC

to save) or downloading the data (writing back the data once backed up on the PC).

SST v2.01 is applicable to the following digital copiers:

CLC1100 Series, CLC5000

CP660, 680, and 2100 Series

GP3/400 Series, GP 600 Series

iR Series

SST v2.01 is also usable with the following accessories which store firmware in flash

ROM:

Finishers E1, J1, and L1

ADF H1

Note that the flash ROM may be changed to mask ROM in the course of production, in

which case firmware download becomes impossible.

4

Page 5: SSTv201E_OpManual

2 Preparation Before upgrading copier firmware using SST, prepare the items listed in the following.

2.1 PC PC specifications

To use SST, prepare a PC that meets the specifications below.

Architecture: IBM PC/AT compatible

CPU: MMX Pentium 166 MHz or higher

(To connect to iR products, Celeron with 400 MHz or higher is

recommended.)

Main memory: 32 MB or greater (64 MB or greater is recommended.)

Disk space: 100 MB or greater

(Disk space requirement varies depending on the number of firmware

products to register.)

Display resolution: VGA (640 by 480 pixels) or higher

Number of colors: 32000 (16 bit) or greater

Parallel port: Bi-Centronics (IEEE 1284)

ECP mode support is required.

Serial port: RS-232C (D-sub 9-pin connector)

USB port: USB 1.1

Network interface: 10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet (IEEE 802.3)

TCP/IP protocol

OS: Windows 98/98SE, NT4.0 Workstation, 2000 Professional, XP

Windows NT cannot be used with iR1600/2000 Series because these

copiers connect to a main unit via USB cable but the OS do not support

USB.

Note that Windows Me is not applicable regardless of the copier models.

PC settings

To use SST, the PC BIOS must be set up to select ECP mode for parallel port

operation. On some PCs ECP mode is the default. If the modes of operation are

set to vary automatically, SST does not function normally. Be sure to select ECP

mode. To set up parallel port operation mode, usually the BIOS setup menu

executable at PC startup is used. Some PCs incorporate utility programs for the

purpose. The setting procedure varies by the PC. Refer to the operation manual

of your PC.

Points to check on using high-speed mode during the parallel connection to IR Series.

5

Page 6: SSTv201E_OpManual

✓ Click on “Control Panel” -> “System” -> “Device Manager”, and make sure that the

indication, “ECP Printer Port (LPT1)” is displayed at parallel port.

✓ With regard to property resource of LPT1, check to make sure that value is

indicated in each item of I/O range, Request for Interrupt, or DMA. Furthermore,

the message, “No competition” is displayed in the competitive device sections.

If the above-mentioned settings are not made, perform the BIOS setting of PC.

Generally, most of PCs go into the BIOS setting mode by pressing a function key such

as “F1” at their boot-up. The setting for parallel port is mostly included in the item of

“Advanced Setting”.

Select “ECP” for operation mode of parallel port.

Since DMA is used for high-speed mode of STT, if there is a selection to use DMA in

the BIOS setting, select “Yes (use)”, and set up the CH No. of DMA.

Each proper value of I/O address, IRQ, and DMA differs depending on the PC

environment; thus, we are unable to specify the value. The method to change the

BIOS setting also differs depending on PC, so refer to each Instruction Manual for

procedure.

2.2 Connection Cables SST uses 5 types of connection cables. Select the cables fit for the device to work on

with SST. The cable types are listed below with the target devices.

Parallel cable: CLC/CP/GP, iR (iR1600/2000 excluded)

USB-Parallel Cable: CLC/CP/GP/ iR products equipped with the parallel port

(For Widows 2000/XP/98 series only)

Network cable: iR (iR1600/2000 excluded)

USB cable: iR1600/2000

Downloader PCB: Accessories

Parallel cable Prepare a parallel cable that meets the IEEE 1284 standard (with the indication of

“IEEE Std 1284-1994 compliant”). The connector on the PC side must be the D-sub

25-pin connector (IEEE 1284-A connector) and that on the device side must be the

Amphenol type full-pitch 36-pin connector (IEEE 1284-B connector), which are the

most generally used connectors.

The cable is desired to be as short as possible provided that connection is not

hindered (so as to avoid malfunctions induced by rfi).

Use of a cable that is not up to the IEEE 1284 standard may result in malfunctions

due to rfi.

USB Parallel Adapter (Parts Number:FY9-4154-000) Be sure to prepare the USB parallel adapter, the part No. FY9-4154-000 USB-Parallel

Cable. For the setup procedure, refer to “3.4 Installing the driver for the USB-Parallel

Adapter ”.

Network cable Prepare a network cable of category 5, a cross cable with twisted pairs of wires.

The cable is desired to be as short as possible provided that connection is not

hindered.

USB cable Prepare a USB cable that meets the standard. Use of a cable that is not up to the

standard may result in malfunctions due to rfi.

The cable is desired to be as short as possible provided that connection is not

hindered

Downloader PCB (Parts Number:FY9-2034-000) To download firmware for accessories, signal must be supplied from external to

control operation of the CPU. The downloader PCB incorporates a circuit for the

7

Page 8: SSTv201E_OpManual

purpose. The download PCB comes with an RS-232C cable for connecting to the

PC. This is a straight cable. Use of a cross cable instead hinders communication

and results in SST error.

The RS-232C cable connector is the D-sub 9-pin connector, which is in general use

for PCs. If the connector on your PC is a 25-pin connector, use an adapter available

in the market.

8

Page 9: SSTv201E_OpManual

2.3 SST Setup Files Regardless of Windows OS, STT Setup file set has been combined into 1 type since

v1.61.

Each file set consists of the four files below:

Files when upgrading SST. On the whole, application program does not operate by itself, but using OS

functions provided by *DLL or *OCX. If a version of *DLL or *OCX assumed in

the application program and a version installed in OS do not match, the program

may not properly operate.

Set up program includes these system files, and if necessary, upgrading *DLL or

*OCX is done at the same time with installing application.

Firmware items registered by previous versions of SST are stored in the ServTool

folder on the same drive SST is installed. Leave the ServTool folder alone, and

install the new version of SST on the same derive to carry over the previously

registered firmware data.

5 How to Operate CLC/CP/GP 5.1 Outline

CLC/CP/GP stores firmware in flash ROM DIMM, so the firmware can be upgraded

either by downloading or replacement of the DIMM.

The bidirectional Centronics interface is used for downloading.

The boot program for downloading is stored in mask ROM of the CPU.

Thanks to this, you can retry download if the first trial fails.

5.2 Connection 1) Turn off power to the PC and the copier.

2) Connect the PC to the copier with the parallel cable.

3) Set the mode switch on the copier to download mode.

4) Start the PC and activate SST.

5) Click the "To Next" button on the right part of the SST main menu.

6) Turn on power to the copier. Some of the models require the power switch on the

operation panel to be turned on. Refer to the Service Manual of the model.

For Windows XP, if PC boots up before the main unit starts up, and use SST, SST

may be hung up by “Detection Wizard for New Hardware” started up during

communication between SST and the main unit, though it depends on the combination

of the main unit and PC. To prevent this, be sure to turn ON the main unit first, and then

turn ON the PC. When “Detection Wizard for New Hardware” appears after Windows

starts up, press “Cancel” to close the wizard.

7) On the Unit Selection screen, select the model and unit to connect. The "Connect"

button becomes operational. Click "Connect" to display the Setup Confirmation

screen.

8) Confirm the cable connections and mode switch setting, then click "OK."

7 How to Operate iR Products (iR1600/2000 Excluded) [New!] 7.1 Outline

For iR products, SST can provide the following services:

Firmware downloading

Backupdata uploading

Backup data downloading

HD formatting (initialization)

Units of iR products that can be worked on with SST are listed below. Note that unit

configuration varies by the model.

Boot

G3FAX

G4FAX

HDFormat

Language

MEAPCONT

MPSFONTF

RUI

System

RCON

DCON

To connect SST, the copier must be set to download mode. There are two modes of

download for iR products:

Normal mode (download in service mode)

Safe mode (download by boot ROM)

Differences of functions available in the two modes of download are described below.

Mode of download Normal mode Safe mode

Formattable HD area Image data area and work area

Entire HD including system area

Uploadable backup data

All SRAMIMG only (MEAPBACK)

iR Bidirectional Centronics/network

Bidirectional Centronics (Network)

Available interface

iRC Network Network

53

Page 54: SSTv201E_OpManual

The download control program for normal mode is incorporated in the system software.

Since the copier must be in service mode to call the program, you cannot start

download in normal mode if the copier cannot be started. By contrast, the download

control program for safe mode is saved in the boot ROM and you can start download in

safe mode when the system software is not able to start or after replacing the HD with

the service part.

MEAP machine enables to temporarily save MEAP application software in safe mode

during the HD Format.

For iRC Series and MEAP-support iR machine, networks are available even while they

are in safe mode.

With iR3250, of which boot ROM does not implement the download control program,

download is possible only in normal mode.

With the iR products, the following interfaces are usable:

Bidirectional Centronics (IEEE1284 ECP mode)

Network (TCP/IP)

* iRC Series is possible for Network only.

To establish network connection, special setting is necessary on both the copier and the

PC. However, network connection enables faster data transfer than does bidirectional

Centronics connection, thereby saving download time.

With bidirectional Centronics connection, an option of low-speed or high-speed mode is

provided on Windows 95, 98, and 98SE. Note that operations in high-speed mode

depend on hardware(chip set) of the PC and system configuration of the PC, and are

not always normal on some PCs. If there is any problem, select low-speed mode.

On Windows NT/2000/XP, only low-speed mode is available.

For bidirectional Centronics connection, use an IEEE1284 compliant cable with the

indication of it. Select short cable as far as there is no obstacle to work. Use of a

non-compliant cable or long cable may result in error due to rfi, etc. during the use of

SST.

For network connection, use a cross cable consisting of twisted pairs of wires of

category 5, and connect PC to the device directly.

54

Page 55: SSTv201E_OpManual

iRC Series and MEAP-support iR machine includes Network Port as standard

equipment. Since servicing fixed IP address is set up by turning ON the main power

while pressing the numeric keypad “1” and “7” at the same time, there is no need to

change the IP address of the main unit at download mode (normal mode) from service

mode.

In addition, the servicing fixed IP address is automatically set up even if these machines

start up in safe mode. The servicing fixed IP address is as follows in all cases:

172.16.1.100

Be sure to set up IP address of a servicing PC as shown below:

IP address: 172.16.1.160

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

With iRC Series, it is possible to download the firmware of its main unit (reader and

printer units) from service PC via Ethernet (Network).

Basically, for adding the PDL functions, only add BootROM, and UFR. You do not need

to download firmware for PDL.

55

Page 56: SSTv201E_OpManual

7.2 Connection 1) Determine the mode of download on the iR product, and the interface to use.

2) Connect the PC to the iR product using the interface cable fit for the selected

interface.

For bidirectional Centronics connection, be sure to turn off power to both the copier

and the PC before connecting the cable. Connecting the cable while either the

copier or the PC is turned on may result in failure.

3) Start up the PC and start SST.

4) Set the iR product to download mode.

Normal mode (download mode in service mode):

Service mode > COPIER > FUNCTION > SYSTEM > DOWNLOAD > OK

iRC Series and MEAP-support iR machine: Normal mode (Download mode for

7.7 Formatting HD 7.7.1 Outline

The hard disk of an iR product is partitioned to more than one area. Using SST,

either the entire HD or a selected area can be formatted (initialized).

Different partitions can be formatted in different modes of download.

In normal mode, the data area and work area can be formatted. In safe mode, the

system area can be formatted. The download control program for normal mode is

incorporated in the system software, which is saved in the system area. Formatting

an area erases all the files in that area. Therefore, formatting the system area or the

entire HD including the system area is possible only in safe mode, but not in normal

mode.

Note that the HDs supplied as service parts are not initialized, so after installing one

on a copier, you must format the entire disk before downloading the system or RUI.

7.7.2 Procedure

1) Enter the copier to the mode of download fit for the area to format.

2) Select HDFormat for the Unit and make connection.

Since the iR1600/2000 Series copiers store firmware on their flash ROM (DIMM), the

firmware can be upgraded by downloads.

This series copiers use the USB for the download interface. Because of this, the PC

OSes for firmware download for the machines are limited to Windows 98, 98SE, 2000,

and XP. Note that Windows 95 and NT are inapplicable because these OSes do not

support the USB. Of iR16000/2000, the USB connector for download is the USB port

located on the image processor board. The USB port on the accessory printer board

cannot be used for firmware download.

On a USB interface, Copiers of this series are recognized as devices of a group called

the USB printer class. In order to communicate with a device of the USB printer class,

a PC uses a special driver called the USB printer class driver. This special driver is

incorporated in Windows 2000 and XP, but not in Windows 98/98SE. Therefore, when

connecting SST on a Windows 98/98SE machine to a copier of this series for the first

time, this special driver must be installed to the PC. Installation of the driver is not

necessary for the second and the following connections.

8.2 Deleting Old Version USB Printer Class Driver This is required only if you have downloaded iR1600/2000 with Windows98/98SE.

For procedure, perform MSUSBUN98.exe, which is the setup file set of SST, and re-boot

PC.

9 How to Operate USB Parallel Adapter

When the USB-parallel adapter driver is properly installed, “USB-Adp” is displayed in the

interface field by selecting any unit which supports the Bi-Centro interface while the

USB- parallel adapter is being connected to a servicing PC.

Once an applicable unit is selected, communication between the machine and SST

starts via the USB-parallel adapter.

F9-000-01

Basically, operation after connection is established is same as that of Bi-Centro

connection.

For the CLC/CP/GP machine, however, available operation is limited to firmware

downloading.

10 Using the Collective Download Function - New! - 10.1 Overview

Starting with version 2.01 of the SST, you can collectively download various pieces of

firmware to an iR/iRC Series machine. To take advantage of this function, you need to

register combinations of firmware in advance. This function is usually referred to as

“collective download” or “batch download.”

In collective downloading, the SST will automatically check the version information

prepared to indicate registered firmware combinations and install the multiple pieces of

firmware in sequence, thus freeing you from the need to make individual selections.

The collective downloading function requires the presence of firmware (as do the

previous versions of the SST) and information files (version 2.01 of the SST) including a

file on firmware combinations. Once an information file for collective downloading has

been stored, the notation [ALL] will be added to the Unit Selection screen. To initiate

collective downloading, simply select [ALL] and start the function.

The interface may be “network,” “Bi-Centronics,” or “USB.”

You may use collective downloading only when you are downloading firmware; in other

words, you will not be able to use it for uploading or downloading backup data.

10.2 Steps to Follow

1) On the Unit Selection screen, select [ALL] (i.e., unit for collective downloading). 2) Click [Batch Download].
