A Lasting Legacy

Daniel, Joseph, Carl, and

Timothy Dominick are

pictured at their family

business, Jamestown

Roofing Inc. Together,

with their mother, Mary,

they established a fund in memory of their father, Carl.

The Carl Dominick Jamestown Roofing Fund will provide

financial support to St. Susan Center and the Community

Foundation’s Fund for the Region.

Marjorie Larson graduated from WCA

School of Nursing and spent the next 38

years as a registered nurse at WCA. Her

kind and caring personality resonated

with her patients, as well as her family.

Her recent passing inspired nieces and

nephews to create The Marjorie L.

Larson Memorial Scholarship to assist

second year Jamestown Community

College nursing students.

Although she relocated to South Carolina in 2010, Linda Lee Viney Sharpe never forgot her connection to

Chautauqua County and the kind, unselfish volunteers of her local fire department.

Prior to her passing in November, she established The Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department

Endowed Scholarship to provide financial support to fire department members, their children and

grandchildren to further their education at a college, university, or vocational school.

A beloved science teacher in the

Falconer Central School District,

G. Merwin Jones, inspired his

students inside and outside the

classroom until his retirement in

1993.

Merwin loved to learn and taught

himself how to sail, carve wood, and even speak German before

passing away in January 2016. His family created the

G. Merwin Jones Memorial Scholarship to support

graduating Falconer Central School students majoring in a

science related or medical course of study.

Members of the Jamestown

High School Class of 1966

created a scholarship fund in

honor of their 50th Class

Reunion. The Jamestown

High School Class of 1966

Scholarship Fund will assist a

graduating JHS senior further

his or her education.

Fund for the Region

The Community Foundation’s Fund for the Region provided funds to the

Jamestown Renaissance Corporation making matching funds available for

homeowners, community members, and local businesses to revitalize Jamestown.

Since 2011, The Renaissance Block Challenge, encourages groups of neighbors to

collaborate on exterior improvements to their properties in order to boost

confidence in Jamestown’s neighbors and inspire others to reinvest. This program

brought together 350 homeowners and invested nearly $1 million in neighborhoods

by property owners and matching funds.

The following Jamestown neighborhoods were selected for the 2017 Neighborhood

Block Challenge: Dearing Avenue, Front Street East, Front Street West, Hotchkiss

Street and Widrig Avenue.

Residents and local community representatives plant a tree on

Kingsbury Street as part of its 2016 participation in the

Renaissance Block Challenge.

Randy Sweeney, Community Foundation executive director, and Joe

Hoose, Southwestern Soccer Club president, review plans for a new

concession stand to be constructed at Loomis Bay Park in Ashville. A

grant from Fund for the Region supported this project that will also

serve as additional storage space for equipment.

Rev. Leecroft Anthony Clark, pastor of Healing Word Ministries of God,

stocks food items for the church’s Bread of Life Food Pantry on new

shelving purchased through a grant from the foundation. The pantry

follows guidelines established by the Food Bank of WNY and allows its

users an opportunity to select items based on their family’s needs.

Pictured at right is an example of a restored waterfront buffer near Chautauqua

Lake. According to the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy, these buffers

significantly reduce excessive runoff, flooding, erosion, and nutrient loading into

tributary streams and lakes.

In order to help restore these aquatic ecosystems, Fund for the Region

provided a grant to CWC to educate landowners on these needs and offer

landscaping assistance to benefit the lake.

Fund for the Region provides the broadest range of support for the community’s well-being

JAMESTOWN, NY 14701

It is with a heavy heart we learned of the passing of Robert A. Sundell on Feb. 15, 2017.

A Jamestown native, Bob graduated from Jamestown High School and received a Bachelor of Science

degree in Biology from Allegheny College and a Master of Science degree in Wildlife Management from

Michigan State University.

He enjoyed teaching and completed his formal career as professor of biology and environmental

science at Jamestown Community College.

His expertise in ornithology aided in his leadership of the City of Jamestown Parks, Recreation, and

Conservation Department; Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History; and Audubon Community

Nature Center.

A member of the Community Foundation’s Legacy Society, Bob, along with his wife, Pat, established The Robert and Patricia Sundell Environmental

Fund to provide financial support to RTPI, Audubon Community Nature Center, and the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy.

The city’s future is brighter because of him.

An Extraordinary Leader
