CONNECT GLOBALLY. THRIVE LOCALLY.Celebrating 59 years of promoting peace through people-to-people relationships

Founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, Sister Cities International is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit which serves as the national membership organization for individual sister cities, counties, and states across the U.S.

This network unites tens of thousands of citizen diplomats and volunteers in 545 communities with over 2,100 partnerships in 145 countries on six continents.

Sister Cities International was created at President Eisenhower’s 1956 White House summit on citizen diplomacy, where he envisioned a network that would be a champion for peace and prosperity by fostering bonds between people from different communities around the world. By forming these relationships, President Eisenhower reasoned that people from different cultures could understand, appreciate, and celebrate their differences while building partnerships that would lessen the chance of new conflicts. Since its inception, the Sister Cities International network has played a key role in renewing and strengthening important global relationships.

Together with the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), Sister Cities International and Chicago Sister Cities International, will host the 2015 U.S.-China Sister Cities Conference. Business leaders, government officials, and citizen diplomats from the U.S. and China will convene in beautiful Chicago, Illinois to discuss ways in which they can affect change in their local communities. The Conference will provide exciting opportunities for U.S. and Chinese cities to learn about strengthening exchanges and growing business opportunities through informative sessions led by industry leaders. Sessions and forums are designed for networking, learning, and sharing of best practices.

This Conference marks the second U.S.-China Sister Cities Conference held between Sister Cities International and the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. The first U.S.-China Sister Cities Conference was held in Washington, DC in 2014 to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the first sister city relationship between the U.S. and China. Thirty-six other U.S.-China Sister City programs were awarded for their continued success. The Conference was highlighted in the 2013 U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue outcomes on sub-national cooperation. 2015 is a big anniversary year for Chicago and their Chinese sister cities. Shanghai and Shenyang will celebrate their 30th anniversaries! Also, Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently signed an economic development MOU with the Minister of Commerce from the People’s Republic of China, Gao Hucheng, and the vice mayors and leadership representatives of eight major Chinese cities. The City of Chicago has set up many events to promote U.S.-Chinese business relations and exchange as a result of this Gateway Cities Agreement. Sister Cities International is excited to bring this gathering to Chicago, home to 28 outstanding sister city partnerships!
