LeapingRevelations & Epiphanies

In this spirited collection of essays, Brian Doyle employs his wit, wisdom, and gusto for life as he shares with readers his thoughts on Jesus, the Mass, birds, bees, and so much more. Doyle ponders such questions as: What would be a good alternative name for Jesus? What does a honeybee at Mass have to tell us about Christ? What is, after all, the real point of saying prayers when someone is suff ering?

rough the good and the bad, the serious and the hilarious, Doyle fi nds just the right story and just the right words to help us better understand life and love and to help us see our faith in a whole new light.

This NEW EDITION of Leaping contains a new introduction along with several new essays!

“No one writes prose with the verve and honesty, the gusto and wit of Brian Doyle. Read Leaping and I know you’ll agree—Brian Doyle is a superb, a sublime, artist of the written word.”

PATTIANN ROGERSPoet and author of Song of the World Becoming

“Brian Doyle says he believes that everything is a prayer. No wonder, then, that his eye for beauty, his ear for language, and his feel for the mysteries of life are all unerring.”

Brian Do le

When lethargy, stereotypes, and quasi-despair get in the way of the holy exuberance of a lived faith, the spirit and passion of the faithful can slowly wither away. Noted essayist Brian Doyle’s deep desire is to get Catholics excited about their faith once again, reminding them that the heartbeat of Catholicism is found not under priestly robes or in papal decrees, but in parish halls and at football stadiums, at breakfast tables and on city buses.

Doyle’s trademark candor, wit, and humor make this collection of more than 40 essays eminently enjoyable to read. From preparing for his First Confession by creating a fake laundry list of sins, to observing his mom’s reaction to President Kennedy’s assassination, to pondering his friend’s surprising success with Catholic Golf Digest, Doyle’s passionate writing is as likely to make us shed a tear as it is to make us laugh out loud.

e orny Grace of It proves that the Catholic faith—imperfect as it may be—is wildly afl ame in hearts and lives everywhere!

Funny, honest, and salty stories of a rarely discussed yet thrivingCatholic faith

The Art of Spiritual Writing

How to Craft Prose That Engages and Inspires Your Readers

ere’s a constant hunger in the world for books that explore the spiritual aspects of life, but writing about spirituality is far more complex than simply sharing personal refl ections about God and the life of faith. Editors and publishers who specialize in spiritual writing fi nd that what is important to work out for yourself on paper may not always be the best way to connect to readers. Because of its personal nature, it can be diffi cult to fi nd the balance in spiritual writing between what is good writing for you and what is good writing for others.

Incorporating her 20+ years of publishing and writing experience, Vinita Hampton Wright provides a practical and straightforward look at spiritual writing for a broader audience in e Art of Spiritual Writing. is slim volume is loaded with writing tips, advice, and exercises to help the writer hone and craft his or her personal thoughts into an engaging, inspiring, and publishable piece. Readers will learn such things as why authenticity matters, how to fi nd their authentic voice, and how to engineer their creativity so that it resonates with readers.

e Art of Spiritual Writing demonstrates that by taking the time to learn and implement the process and craft of writing, we can begin to uncover new ways to connect with ourselves, our readers, and God. And as we grow in our writing ability, our spirituality blossoms as well.

Living By Faith, Dwelling in DoubtSeeking God in a Secular Age

It may seem as if the concept of faith has become a line in the sand: you either have it or you don’t. And if you have questions, then you don’t. But such stark statements like these are not only untrue, but also lead to more questions. Do questions and uncertainties negate our faithfulness? If faith is all or nothing, how do we navigate the in-between and fi nd our own conclusions? What about during diffi cult times when we feel especially confused and wonder, “Where is God?” Finding God in our current culture of religious rhetoric can leave us overwhelmed and uncertain of where to turn.

In Living by Faith, Dwelling in Doubt, Kyle Cupp explores how the path we take to fi nd our faith requires a mindful examination that ultimately strengthens our connection to God. Nagged by these same issues, Cupp applies his own experiences to dig through the swirling questions of faith. By contemplating topics such as the pursuit of truth, fi nding God in the bleakest moments, and coming to terms with the unknown, Cupp discovers that walking through the darkness can lead to true freedom in faith.

For all who wonder where to go when confl icted by substantial questions, Living by Faith, Dwelling in Doubt off ers a way to fi nd our faith within the murkiness of uncertainty. As Cupp demonstrates how uncertainty doesn’t kill faith but rather is a condition in which faith can thrive, the line in the sand slowly begins to wash away.

Can authentic Catholicism be found—and lived—between faith and doubt?

KYLE R. CUPP

KYLE R. CUPP has a BA in English and MA in philosophy from Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. He is an independent writing and editing professional with extensive experience working in a Catholic environment as a teacher, administrator, and director of outreach ministries. A Book of Adventand Christmas Prayers

Our spiritual lives can easily suff er amid the chaos of the Christmas season if we don’t take time to quiet our hearts and refl ect on God becoming human. A Book of Advent and Christmas Prayers by William G. Storey is a much-needed solution to this perennial problem.

A concise yet comprehensive collection of Advent and Christmas prayers, this book is uniquely organized around the story of the Incarnation, beginning with the Immaculate Conception of Mary and continuing all the way through Jesus’ appearance in the Temple at age 12. Divided into three main sections—Prayers for Christmas and Advent, Devotions for Advent, and Devotions for Christmastide—Storey includes many deeply meaningful yet virtually unknown ancient prayers of the Church, some of them translated into contemporary language for the fi rst time.

Blessed by LessClearing Your Life of Clutter by Living Lightly

Perhaps the easiest way for people to defi ne success in life is the accumulation of “stuff ”—fancy electronics, clothing, and shoes, just to name a few. But what happens when all that stuff starts to overwhelm us? And even worse, what happens when the physical baggage that weighs us down turns into emotional and spiritual baggage and builds up to the point that we lose sight of what’s important? We may feel that by giving up any of it, we could lose a part of ourselves.

In Blessed by Less, Susan Vogt discusses what happened when she found herself overburdened and suff ocated by all the clutter she was carrying around in her life. She decided one Lent to give away at least one thing every day. After 40 days of living lightly, she felt so good about it that she continued the practice for an entire year. Along the way she discovered that by unburdening herself of things, she was also opening up a spiritual space inside herself.

Vogt guides readers through the process of uncluttering from a holistic perspective—spiritual, physical, and emotional—so that we can better know what to keep and what to let go. Ultimately, Blessed by Less shows us how clearing out our cluttered closets and crowded hearts and minds can actually fi ll us with great joy and free us from many burdens.

Unclutter your mind to fi nd a deeper sense of peace with your faith.

How Ignatian Spirituality Can Guide Your Life

DiscoveringYour Dream

Decisions, decisions, decisions! Every day is full of them. Big or little, major or minor, we are constantly choosing between paths. But have you ever thought about how that happens? More importantly, have you ever impulsively made a decision that turned out not to be in your best moral or spiritual interests? Overall, are you sure that the decisions you’re making are helping you get closer to God’s desire for your life?

In Discovering Your Dream, Gerald Fagin, SJ, uses St. Ignatius’s principles of the Spiritual Exercises, coupled with an Ignatian approach to decision making, to guide us through a discernment process that truly satisfi es our deepest desires and brings us closer to God. He shows readers how St. Ignatius’s own decision-making process can be adapted to meet the needs of our faith and lead us to our truest selves that God desires for all of us.

When faced with diffi cult or crippling decisions, it helps to seek wisdom from others. Discovering Your Dream shows us that the path to our truest desires is attainable in our own lives when we are guided by the groundwork laid by St. Ignatius.

How to Welcome, Include, and Catechize Children with Developmental DisabilitiesA Parish-Based Approach

Deacon Larry Sutton knows fi rsthand how important and rewarding catechizing children with developmental disabilities can be. In How to Welcome, Include, and Catechize Children with Developmental Disabilities, he provides bishops, pastors, DREs, and other diocesan and parish leaders with a guide for creating a program that addresses the needs of children with physical, developmental, and cognitive disabilities and welcomes them into the life of the parish.

How to Welcome, Include, and Catechize Children with Developmental Disabilities helps parishes

• Understand disabilities—and abilities.• Build relationships with children with special needs.• Provide one-on-one customized catechesis using

existing resources.• Inspire teens to volunteer.• Revitalize, educate, and involve the entire parish.

Sutton provides the insights needed to build an eff ective faith-formation program. By sharing stories of success and inspiration that aff ect everyone—pastor, parent, student, teenager, and teacher—he delivers the unexpected: that catechizing children with special needs actually nurtures the faith of the entire parish.

In Recipe for Joy, food writer, converted Catholic, and new wife and stepmom Robin Davis shares her stories of food, faith, and family life and discovers that food is the language she can speak best when stepping into unfamiliar territory. Davis’s inspiring account reveals that food and faith can go hand in hand and that God uses people (and some really good meals) to bring us into a closer relationship with God.

When Amy Andrews and Jessica Mesman Griffi th met in a creative writing class in graduate school, they bonded over their mutual interest in writing about God. From there blossomed a beautiful spiritual friendship and a way of walking with one another toward God. Told through the timeless medium of letters, Love & Salt is the emotional struggle of how one spiritual friendship is formed and tested in tragedy and tempered in hope.

In Rock-Bottom Blessings, Karen Beattie illustrates what is possible when we experience God’s presence during periods of grief, loss, and disappointment. With the help of her friends and her newfound Catholic faith, Beattie learns to trust that God’s plan is better than hers and that life’s challenges are gifts to be accepted like all other gifts from God: with reverence and gratitude.

An Experience of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola

Random MOMents of Grace helps mothers realize that their spiritual lives can thrive in a world of play dates and playgrounds. For any mom wondering whether it’s possible to be fully engaged in the adventures of motherhood without sacrifi cing her spirituality, Ginny Kubitz Moyer shows how to see God’s grace in the silliest, messiest, and most frustrating moments of motherhood.

Best-selling author Joe Paprocki has written the fi rst, step-by-step book that demonstrates how to teach a 75-minute catechetical session with practical techniques that expand beyond the textbook. Beyond the Catechist’s Toolbox creates a more prayerful climate in the classroom that enables young people to personally encounter Jesus in prayer and become lifelong disciples of Christ.

In God Finds Us, Jim Manney proves that the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola are accessible and relevant to our modern lives. He shows readers that they don’t focus on theology or doctrine. Rather, they are meditations, refl ections, and prayers that help enliven our faith and bring about a changed heart more than a changed mind.

What Does sunday Mass Mean for Your Monday?

Many Catholics believe that far more people would attend Mass if only the homilies were better, or the music was more inspiring,

or . . . the list goes on. But best-selling authors Fr. Dominic Grassi and Joe Paprocki are convinced that the real problem lies not in the Mass itself but in a lack of understanding of how the Mass prepares each person to live day in and day out as a baptized Catholic Christian.

In this revised edition of Living the Mass, which takes into account the changes in the Roman Missal, Grassi and Paprocki thoughtfully explain how each part of the Mass relates to our baptismal call, effectively closing the gap between Sunday Mass and the rest of the week.

Ideal for the countless Catholics who haven’t been to Mass in a while, for the many who attend Mass simply out of habit, or for anyone who desires to join the Catholic Church, Living the Mass compellingly demonstrates how the one hour spent at Mass on Sunday can truly transform how we think and act the other 167 hours of the week.

Fr. Dominic Grassi is a well-known and well-loved pastor in the Archdiocese of Chicago. He is the author of the Bumping into God . . . series.

Joe Paprocki, DMin, is national consultant for faith formation at Loyola Press. He is a popular speaker and the author of many books, including Practice Makes Catholic.

What happens when an average Jane experiences God’s extraordinary grace?

or 17 years, Jane Knuth has been volunteering at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store in Kalamazoo, Michigan, which may seem like a fairly ordinary thing to do. But Jane doesn’t

see her volunteer work simply as a chance to help others for a few hours each week; she sees it as an opportunity for God to teach her some of life’s richest lessons.

In Thrift Store Graces, Jane continues the witty, inspiring, and thought-provoking storytelling that she began in her first book, Thrift Store Saints. But this time, Jane introduces us to some far more challenging personal situations that emerge as a result of her volunteer work. Also, she beautifully weaves in stories of her pilgrimage to Medjugorje in war-torn Bosnia—from her initial, well-reasoned resistance to taking the trip to her subsequent joy in having embarked on such a soul-changing journey.

Whether Jane is dealing with her wallet being stolen from the Kalamazoo thrift store or she’s climbing a perilously muddy mountain in Medjugorje, a delightful sense of humor keeps her going—along with her deep conviction that some of God’s greatest gifts come disguised as difficulties.

Jane Knuth is the author of Thrift Store Saints, which won first place for “Popular Presentation of the Catholic Faith” from the Catholic Press Association. Jane and her husband, Dean, live in Portage, Michigan.

Discovering the Power of St. Ignatius Loyola’s Examen

J I M M A N N E Y

ISBN-13: 978-0-8294-3535-1ISBN-10: 0-8294-3535-2

Break through the prayer barrier.

For most people most of the time, prayer is hard. It is especially difficult—not to mention unsatisfying—when people experience it as formal,

dry, and repetitious. But what might happen if you discovered a simple prayer that changed all that? What if you discovered a prayer that changed you?

In The Prayer That Changes Everything, Jim Manney introduces Christians to a 500-year-old form of prayer that dramatically altered his perception of prayer and the way he prayed. The prayer is the examen, which St. Ignatius Loyola developed for the purpose of nurturing a reflective habit of mind that is constantly attuned to God’s presence.

What makes the prayer so powerful is its capacity to dispel any notion that God is somewhere “up there,” detached from our day-to-day tasks and concerns. Instead, the examen leads us into a relationship with a God who desires to be personally caught up in the lives of those whom he created.

By following five simple steps for praying the examen, we can encounter the God who, as Scripture tells us, “is not far from each one of us”—the God whose presence in our lives can make all the difference in the world.

Jim Manney is co-author of the book What’s Your Decision? as well as the editor of many books on Ignatian spirituality, including What Is Ignatian Spirituality? He is a senior editor for Loyola Press. Jim and his wife live in Michigan.
