Welcome to the

19th AnnuAl Spirit & plAce FeStivAl10 dAyS: 38 perFormAnceS, exhibitS, ScreeningS, And converSAtionS

Explore the dynamic passages of people, places, and ideas from November 7-16

as we examine the theme of JOURNEY.

The journey from “here” to “there” is filled with movement and meaning. How is this

movement shaped by the places we come from and the places we now live in? By cultural

and religious identity? By personal addictions and social predilections? By oppression and

discrimination? By gender and age?

Unpack these and other questions through the lenses of veterans and visual artists,

African Americans and students, immigrants and faith leaders, Burmese and Bangladeshis,

composers and ex-offenders, and much more.

Don’t forget to bring your own questions, for the spirit of inquiry and exploration invites

new movement. Are you ready to set sail for different shores? Let’s venture together to

find the journeys that await us. What new intersections and connections might the

“Crossroads of Indiana” construct to powerfully shape our lives in community together?

meet billy mills (oglala lakota) and see the film “running brave,” which chronicles his journey from the pine ridge reservation to the medal platform at the 1964 tokyo olympics.

As a kid on the reservation, Billy Mills had it tough: he was orphaned by age twelve and once considered suicide. “I felt broken by the racism around [me and looked] toward Native American virtues and values to overcome that,” he relates. In high school, he discovered his passion for running, which led him to the University of Kansas on full athletic scholarship. Fifty years ago, he achieved one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history, winning the gold in the 10,000 meter event. Billy Mills joined forces with Eugene Krizek to create Running Strong for American Indian Youth, a non-profit dedicated to bringing resources and hope to American Indian communities.

Stories and songs are masterfully intertwined to illuminate the presence of the sacred throughout life’s journey.

Rabbi Sandy Eisenberg Sasso and Quaker songwriter Carrie Newcomer host a very special interfaith evening of stories and songs that express the common quest of the soul. Sasso’s stories for children and adults are poignant, powerful, and ask all the right questions. Newcomer’s songs are thoughtful, poetic, good-naturedly humorous, and grounded in a tradition of honoring the presence of the sacred in our daily lives. This collaboration of life-affirming stories and songs will be an evening to remember.

tueSdAy, november 11, 7:00-8:30 pm (doorS open At 6:30 pm)the Athenaeum theatre401 e. michigan St., indianapolis$5 / Free for children 12 & under317-231-0010 ext. 1128 / [email protected]

Presented by Herron High School, Claude McNeal Productions, Indiana Humanities, The Athenaeum Foundation, and Young Actors Theatre (YAT) with support from presenting sponsor American Senior Communities, community partner sponsor Plews Shadley Racher & Braun LLP, hospitality sponsor The Indianapolis Propylaeum and through a matching grant from Indiana Humanities in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Song, dance, historical photographs, and narration combine to tell the story of indianapolis in this original claude mcneal musical performed by high school students.

Celebrate the epic journey that made Indianapolis what it is today. The play is the product of a collaborative historical research partnership between author, Claude McNeal, and David Bodenhamer, Founder and Executive Director of The Polis Center at IUPUI. The award-winning show first originated around the publication of the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis in 1994. This new version emphasizes the passage of people, places, and events that shaped the city.

Young actors bring to life the rich history and heritage of Indiana’s capital city, from its founding in the 1820s to present day. pairs of youth artists and foreign-born adults will show artwork, tell stories about their individual experience, and share about their student-immigrant partnership.

Art has the power to shape how we see each other and the world. Immigration is a topic that greatly impacts our community and our country, but it is often distilled into one image or stereotype. This exhibit brings the human element back into this issue by bonding two groups: local high school art students and foreign-born individuals. During October, the pairs met and delved into the topic of immigration and their personal stories. They then created art based on this exchange.

View artwork made by the pairs and video documentation of the process. Hear directly from the participants about their experience and what they learned. Create your own art focused on heritage and immigration.

Exhibit on display through November (except holidays).

At this dinner theater-style event, nine locals have four minutes to tell stories about a place that has inspired or influenced them and four minutes to share a favorite spot in Central Indiana. This event happens in one such place: the private banquet room with a karaoke stage at arguably the best Chinese restaurant in town, in the International Marketplace neighborhood. Order your own meal at the beginning of the night, and enjoy special guests singing songs by the rock band Journey (in a nod to the Spirit & Place theme) during breaks between the three flights of speakers. Bring your travel or local photos to add to a big sharing wall, trade travel tales, and even take the stage as the evening morphs into an authentic karaoke party.

These themes will be revisited in short segments as we share the stories of five Indianapolis African American women who have nurtured young people and adults alike for many years: poet Mari Evans, founder of iibada Dance Company Sabra Logan, founder of Metropolitan Youth Orchestra Betty Perry, Ophelia Wellington, and visual artist Carol White.

Find joy and beauty as we explore journeys through visual art, the spoken-word, and music and dance performance. We will conclude with an opportunity for the audience to engage in storytelling as we learn how to share our individual journeys with one another.

In March 2007, tragedy struck the heart of Baghdad’s cultural and intellectual community. Al-Mutanabbi Street was destroyed by a car bomb. Named after the famous 10th century classical Arab poet, Al-Mutanabbi, the winding street lled with bookshops and outdoor stalls has for centuries been a meeting place for poets, political dissidents and literary acionados.

In response to the attack, a coalition of international artists and writers rallied to produce “Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here” - a collection of letterpress-printed works on paper, artists’ books, and an anthology of writing, all focused on expressing solidarity with Iraqi booksellers, writers and readers.

In November of 2014, it will be IUPUI’s privilege to permanently host the only U.S. repository of the “Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here” coalition collection, as well as a series of exhibits, presentations and public conversations – to create a bridging cultural dialogue between members of every community.

If, as Robert Fulghum posits,

“dreams are more powerful

that facts,” how might we

dream together about the

future? What past dreams

are present day realities?

How do myths and stories,

prophets and mystics, as well

as art forms give voice to deep

yearnings of the soul? What

aspirations and ambitions do

we have for Central Indiana in

the next 20 years?
