Speed dating with theorists

Page 2: speed dating theorist

Chris Anderson

Chris Anderson born in London in 1961 is an American author. He was with The Economist for seven years, then joined WIRED magazine in 2001.The theory of the Long Tail is that our culture and economy is significantly moving away from mainstream products and markets at the which are on demand in the head and toward a huge number of niches in the tail. The costs of production and distribution falls especially online as it is practically free. I would snog this theorist because I believe his theory holds some truth.

David Gauntlett

Born 15 March 1971 in the UK He is a British sociologist and media theorist.

His earlier work concerned contemporary media audiences, and has moved towards a focus on the everyday making and sharing of digital media and social media. In 2008 Gauntlett introduced 'the Make and Connect Agenda’ which was an attempt to rethink audience studies in the context that media users are producers as well as consumers of media material. which argues that there is a shift from a 'sit-back-and-be-told culture' to a 'making-and-doing culture

I would marry this theorist as I believe that the internet is fast becoming a place for people to create things.

Clay Shirky

Born 1964 is an American writer, consultant and teacher on the social and economic effects of Internet technologies

that people are now learning how to use more constructively the free time and spending less time doing things like watching TV which makes the internet a much more creative place to be.

I would like to spend the last day on earth with this theorist as I believe that I would enjoy using my last day on earth constructively.

Henry Jenkins

A Media scholar and professor born on June 4th 1958

He thought up the convergence culture theory in 2006

The convergence culture theory is the idea of everything coming together on the internet. But specifically concentrates on how institutions use the internet to broadcast information and products. As well as using it to expand companies over the several platforms available, this allows the consumer to consume all the media they want.

I would like to be stuck on a chair lift with this theorist as it would give me time to ask him many questions on his theory as I believe it to be interesting.

Dan Tapscott

Born 1st of June 1947

And is the Chairman to the company nGenera Insight

The Wikinomics theory created in 2006 is the idea that businesses are at a standstill and are no longer bringing in any moneys to support themselves and the solution for this is to use mass collaboration which allows them to increase profit of the business by several times.

I would go to a club with this theorist so I wouldn’t have to put up with him rambling about businesses

Charles Leadbeater

is a British author and former advisor to Tony Blair, therefore i don’t trust him at all!

We-think, explores the new phenomenon of mass creativity exemplified by web sites such as youtube,Wikipedia and Myspace.

Also believes that participating in new media technology is better than consuming it or producing.

I would push Leadbeater off a cliff because I believe that consuming and producing new media helps as it makes you more active with the online community.

Dan Gillmor

Is an American technology writer and columnist.

media corporations cannot control the news we get any longer, now that news is being published in real-time which means that as soon as one piece of news comes out in one region somewhere else more news will be emerging, available to everybody, via the Internet.

I would go have dinner with this theorist as I would like to discuss his theory with him some more.

Stuart Hall

the media appear to reflect reality whilst in fact they construct it. The social situations of readers/viewers/listeners may lead them to adopt different points of view. 'Dominant' readings are produced by those whose social situation is in favour of the preferred reading; 'negotiated' readings are produced by those who twist the preferred reading to appeal to their social standing and 'oppositional' readings are produced by those whose social position puts them into direct conflict with the preferred reading

Hall insists that there remain limits to interpretation: meaning cannot be simply 'private' and 'individual'.

I would avoid this theorist because the basis of his theory I believe to be correct he has overcomplicated it.

Blumler and Katz

Katz is an American and isreli sociologist and Blumler is an American theorist

Uses and gratifications theory invented in 1974

Which is the idea that the audience uses different media texts for specific reasons, although the audience has no control over what is consumed.

They researched the reasons why people watched films.

I would introduce this theorist to my parents as I would like them to understand more about how new media technologies are used.

Jay Rosen

Is a Media critic and professor of journalism

Which was introduced in 2006

Citizen journalism is how normal average people play a role in connecting, distributing and analysing “when the people formerly known as the audience employ the press tools they have in their possession”.

I would do whatever my heart desires with this theorist as I believe his theory to be what is happening to the media right now.
