PICKING THE RIGHT
CORN PRODUCTSelecting the right corn product is very important considering you only get one chance a year to grow your corn crop...you must make it count. Many agronomists/crop consultants agree that even though having the right trait (whether that is root-worm tolerant, glyphosate tolerant, or corn borer tolerant) is important, it’s probably not the most critical. Many agronomists agree; lead with genetics first... then traits. There are many environmental factors to consider when making your corn buying decisions.

ANNUAL RAINFALL The number one environmental factor to consider in product selection is annual rainfall. Legend Seeds has done an exceptional job in rating drought tolerance as well as a product’s ability to move from east to west, primarily due to rainfall.
SOIL, TEXTURE AND DRAINAGE The next most important factor you must consider when making your product selection is soil texture and how well does the ground drain. Heavy soils with poor drainage require an aggressive, lateral branching root style. While lateral branching on coarse, sandy soil is important, deep penetrating root masses are probably the most crucial.
FERTILITY AND WEED SEVERITY Last but not least is fertility and weed severity, but make no mistake...it is important! Poor fertility and heavy weed pressure can be contributing factors to many negatives in corn production:
Soil tests can be an important tool in helping you place the right product on a piece of ground. For example, if you have low potassium levels, you need to have a product with superior stalks. Potassium is a major nutrient in stalk strength enhancement.
Significant weed infestation and weed species are a major and critical evaluation when considering your product buying decision. Many “train wrecks” can be avoided with the use of herbicide tolerant products.
Picking the right products for your operation may seem at times overwhelming, but utilizing tools such as soil tests and the Legend Seeds product guide can help to simplify your decision process.
DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES
*The corn developmental and reproductive stages chart above is provided by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, published in the 2016 ISU Extension and Outreach Corn and Soybean Field Guide
• STALK ROT - Poor fertility and weed pressure enhance stalk rot.
• DROUGHT ENHANCEMENT
• EAR SLIPPAGE - Poor fertility and weed pressure can reduce shank diameter.
• POOR ROOT DEVELOPMENT - Good phosphorus levels are important in root development .

GMONON New this year, we offer a select lineup of certified non-GMO hybrids, clearly marked in the
silage and corn products section with the certified non-GMO image shown.
LEAFY SILAGE HYBRIDSLEAFYSilage varieties containing the Leafy genetics have eight or more leaves above the ear. The leaves above the ear contain less lignin than those below the ear. A dual-purpose hybrid is often significantly taller than a grain hybrid, but the ear placement sets our Leafy silage hybrids apart in terms of feed quality and digestibility. Leafy silage hybrids have 5-7% more starch digestibility than dual-purpose or grain hybrids. Leafy hybrids were discovered and later commercialized in 1985 by world-renowned silage researcher, Dr. Francis Glenn. Today’s Leafy hybrids also contain traits, making them a great option for corn-on-corn situations often faced by dairy and livestock producers.
LEGEND NEXT GENERATION HYBRIDS (LNG)LEAFY & FLOURYLegend Seeds was extremely proud to be the first seed company to bring you Dr. Francis Glenn’s next advancement in silage hybrid genetics in 2014. While using a simple research technique and biting the kernels to test for hardness and texture, Dr. Glenn discovered that the interior of the kernel in a recessive “floury” kernel is made entirely of white flour-type starch. The recessive “floury” genetics will express in up to 25% of the kernels on each ear; they are extremely soft and easily digestible. Because of this discovery and over a decade of breeding and research, LegendNext Generation hybrids offer dairy and livestock producers a quick, 30-day ensiling period and 10-12% more starch digestibility than a dual-purpose or grain hybrid. The addition of the Floury genetics to the already available Leafy silage hybrids created a dream hybrid for silage situations: Leafy and Floury!

Over the last few years I have been very impressed with Legend Seeds Canada and here’s why.
This is the only company that has kept in touch with my operation through the growing season from start to finish.
Sales, products and agronomy couldn’t be better. I have a wide variety of soil types and there is a variety/product for every field.
Legend corn and soybeans have been a top yielder in my operation, using Legend Seeds Canada’s advice on certain varieties in right field has maximized the potential of profit I can produce.
I’ll always be a producer for this company because of their kind people, great advice, and interests in how my farm performs with their products!

24 | |
JULY 25TH 2019 | WINKLER, MANITOBAKnowledge is Power, and that has been the way the Knowledge Plot has evolved over the past 10 years. Growing soybeans and corn to be profitable can be at times a risky business without the proper answers. Not only with new seed technologies such as Xtend® or Enlist™, but also things like the pressure of soybean cyst nematode as well as Goss’s Wilt. There can also be many issues with the soil that need to be researched including things such as: planting depth, row width, soil temperature just to name a few.
We have also learned from the growers over the years they want to know the latest information regarding marketing these crops. We have also incorporated food grade non-GMO soybeans into the Knowledge Plots to keep up with a growing world-wide demand for plant based protein options.
The Knowledge Plot provides an opportunity for dealers and growers to experience the latest product technologies in a plot setting showcased by industry leading experts.
Advancements in leading-edge equipment technology for planting and spraying, as well as harvesting are also showcased in the Knowledge Plot.

THIS IS MY FIELD.So I CAN KEEP CONTROL, all season long.
*Based on approved PMRA herbicide labels as of Aug. 2018.
**Performance may vary from location to location and from year to year, as local growing, soil and weather conditions may vary. Growers should evaluate data from multiple locations and years whenever possible and should consider the impacts of these conditions on the grower’s fields.
Always use dicamba with traditional residual herbicides in pre-emergence and postemergence applications that have different, effective sites of action, along with other Diversified Weed Management Practices (DWMPs).

RR- Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans have demonstrated a clear yield advantage: They yield an average 4.5 Bu/A advantage over original Round Ready soybeans. Studies show that Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans develop greater root biomass, more nodes on the main stem and larger shoot biomass than original Roundup Ready® soybean products.
XTEND - Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® Soybeans are built on the high yielding Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybean technology. Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® is the industry’s first biotech-stacked soybean trait with both dicamba and glyphosate herbicide tolerance. With tolerance to glyphosate and dicamba, farmers will have access to additional tools to help control glyphosate-resistant broadleaf weeds such as Palmer amaranth, waterhemp and marestail, along with other tough-to-control broadleaf weeds such as lambsquarters and velvetleaf. The technology offers the yield and quality potential that farmers already know and trust from their Roundup Ready 2 Yield® soybeans.
Monsanto Company is a member of Excellence Through Stewardship® (ETS). Monsanto products are commercialized in accordance with ETS Product Launch Stewardship Guidance, and in compliance with Monsanto’s Policy for Commercialization of Biotechnology-Derived Plant Products in Commodity Crops. These products have been approved for import into key export markets with functioning regulatory sys-tems. Any crop or material produced from these products can only be exported to, or used, processed or sold in countries where all necessary regulatory approvals have been granted. It is a violation of national and international law to move material containing biotech traits across boundaries into nations where import is not permitted. Growers should talk to their grain handler or product purchaser to confirm their buying position for these products. ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW PESTICIDE LABEL DIRECTIONS. Roundup Ready® technology contains genes that confer tolerance to glyphosate, an active ingredient in Roundup® brand agricultural herbicides. Agricultural herbicides containing glypho-sate will kill crops that are not tolerant to glyphosate. To help preserve the benefits of our trait technology, an Insect Resistance Manage-ment (IRM) plan must be part of every farmer’s production strategy. Farmers who purchase corn products that are not designated as RIB Complete® required to plant a refuge that is appropriate for that product. As part of the IRM plan for RIB Complete corn, experts recommend that growers incorporate crop rotations (out of corn), use
of pyramided traits for below ground pests and, when appropriate, use of insecticides to minimize selec-tion of resistant populations. Farmers should monitor their RIB Complete corn fields for targeted insect pests and contact their local Monsanto representative, retailer, or Monsanto’s Technical Support line at 1.800.667.4944 if they observe any unusual performance problems.
Before opening a bag of seed, be sure to read, understand and accept the stewardship requirements, including applicable refuge requirements for insect resistance management, for the biotechnology traits expressed in the seed as set forth in the reaffirming your obligation to comply with the most recent stew-ardship requirements.
Important: Always read and follow label and bag tag instructions; only those labeled as tolerant to glufosinate may be sprayed with glufosinate ammonium based herbicides.

GT - The Agrisure® GT trait provides tolerance to in-crop applications of glyphosate-based herbicides. This hybrid is an excellent option for refuge acres in a structured refuge operation.
VT2PRIB - VT Double PRO® RIB Complete® Corn Blend is a mix of 95% traited and 5% refuge seed. With refuge-in-a-bag, there’s no need to calculate or plant separate, structured refuge in the Corn-Growing Area. It contains dual modes of action for maximum protection against corn earworm and other above-ground pests, like European and Southwestern corn borers and fall armyworm.
RR - Roundup Ready® Corn 2 contains in-plant tolerance to Roundup® brand herbicides, enabling growers to spray Roundup® brands over the top, from planting through the V8 stage or 30-inch corn height, with excellent crop safety and no yield reduction. Compared to popular conventional corn programs, the Roundup Ready® Corn 2 system costs less, while allowing hybrids to reach their maximum yield potential. While the U.S. regulatory agencies have given full approval to Roundup Ready® Corn 2 for commerce in the U.S. for marketing and consumption as food, food ingredients and feed for livestock, certain regulatory approvals are pending in certain export markets. For more information on these approvals, or for assistance in locating domestic grain outlets, see the American Seed Trade Association web site (www.amseed.org) or contact Monsanto directly at 800-768-6387.
VIP3220 E-Z Refuge - The Agrisure Viptera® 3220 E-Z Refuge® trait stack offers the most comprehensive above-ground insect control in the industry with multiple modes of action against above-ground insects and the convenience of an integrated E-Z Refuge® seed blend. It is ideal for areas where corn rootworm management is not a primary concern.
GTCBLL - Corn borer control with glyphosate and glufosinate tolerance.
