What is Solar Energy?

Form of energy which is obtained from the sun and made useable to generate heat and electricity, as electrons are knocked loose from atoms when sunlight is received.

Produces less than one tenth of 1% of global energy demands in complete silence.

Sustainable and renewable power from an inexhaustible source, the sun.

Pollution-free and ecologically acceptable.

Page 3: Solar Energy

What is it used for?

Goes through energy transformations into heat and electrical energy via solar panels.

Generates electricity as electrons flows through cells, and is converted into electrical current and powers many appliances.

Supply many homes with warm water as Sun’s thermal energy is converted into heat.

Page 4: Solar Energy

How does it work?

Solar thermal power plants uses different techniques to concentrate the sun’s radiant energy as a heat source and make it useable.

Solar panels (Photovoltaic cells) concentrates light onto collector tower, produces molten salt to store and release the sun’s heat in a controlled manner to drive a steam turbine which generates electricity.

Absorbent plates on roofs uses concentrated solar power from solar panels to heat liquid in tubes and produces warm water for houses.

Disadvantages

Solar panels is ineffective when it gathers very little or no thermal energy from the sun.

It doesn’t work at night without a storage device e.g. battery to provide energy for it.

Cloudy weather and obstructing buildings makes technology unreliable and ineffective during the day.

Very expensive installment of system and requires plenty of land area to collect sun’s energy at rates useful to lots of people.

Interesting factsAmount of world’s population using solar energy has surged up by 20% over the last 15 years, due to rapid falling prices and gains in energy efficiency.

Solar power could generate 2.5% of the world’s electricity by 2025.

Improves environmental quality which was damaged by consumption of fossil fuels that pollutes the Earth.

Saves money and energy consumed. E.g. using the sun‘s heat to dry clothes on a washing line instead of a dryer.

Conclusion

Although Solar Energy is not always a reliable energy source when there is cloudy weather or raining, it is still very good because:

It obtains the sun’s radiant energy and generates heat and electricity without polluting the environment.

It is a renewable form of energy and is ecologically acceptable.

Helps us to save money and energy.
