The Church of St. George

The Church of St. George is an Early Christian red brick rotunda that is considered the oldest building in Sofia , the capital of Bulgaria. It was built in 4th century AD.

St. Sofia church in the capital is a symbol of the city. It is the second oldest church in Sofia after the St.

George Rotunda. It was built in the IV century.

The Boyana ChurchThe Boyana Church

It is one of oldest churches in world Heritage. In 1973 it was added to the UNESCO list. There are many paintings on the walls. The whole building was finished in 19th century .The east wing of the two-storey church was originally constructed in the late of 10th or 11th century, then the central wing was added in the 13th century.

St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

The St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral in Sofia. It was completed in 1912 and it’s 45 m high. The church was built as a memorial to the Russian soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish Liberation war (1877-1878).

Construction began in 1907 and the church was

finished in 1914. The church was designed by

the Russian architect Mikhail Preobrazhenski in the Russian Revival Style, with decoration

inspired by Russian churches in Moscow of

the 17th century.

The National Museum of History

• It was founded in 1973. The National Museum of History in Sofia contains more than 650,000 exhibits.

• It provides a view on Bulgarian past from prehistory to present time.

The Earth and Man National Museum

The Earth and Man National Museum is a mineralogical museum in the centre of Sofia.It's one of the biggest mineralogical museums in the world. It was founded in 1985.

The National Museum of Natural History

The National Museum of Natural History has a history of almost one hundred and twenty years. It is the oldest museum in Bulgaria and the oldest and richest among the natural history museums on the Balkan Peninsula.

Vassil Levski Monument

Vassil Levski was born in 1837 and died on 18 February 1873 in Sofia. He was a fighter for freedom against the Ottomans oppressors. The Monument stays on the place where he was hung.

The Bulgarian Parliament

The Statue of Tsar Osvoboditel (King Deliberator) is one of famous sculptures of the Italian sculptor Arnaldo Dzoki. It was dedicated to the Russian Emperor Alexander II and the soldiers who died in the Russian-Turkish War, which ended in 1878. The monument was erected in 1903.

This is our Parliament. It was built in 1885.There are more than 240 MPs. The statue below is opposite the Parliament.

The National Theatre Ivan Vazov

Founded in 1904 by the

artists from the Salza i Smyah company, it was initially called simply the National Theatre, but before being named after the prominent writer Ivan Vazov.

The Ivan Vazov National Theatre is one of the important landmarks of Sofia.

The National Archaeological

Museum Founded in 1892, this is the oldest museum in Bulgaria. It contains over 55,000 monuments and 1.3 million coins.

One of the fabulous artifacts in the museum is the oldest gold object found in Bulgaria. It is the solid gold mask which belonged to the Thracian King Teres.

The National Palace of Culture

The National Palace of Culture is the biggest Congress centre on the Balkans mainly used for cultural events.The Palace was opened in 1981 and its architect is Alexander Bars.

The National Library St. St. Cyril and Methodius

The National Library of Bulgaria is the biggest library in our country and the oldest cultural institute. The library was build in 1954.

Sofia University

Sofia University has 16 faculties and three departments, where 14,000 students receive their education. It has a university library, a university press, a computer centre, a sport centre and several other structures.Most of our teachers graduated from this University.
