TV Magazine Front Cover

Source of InspirationHistory of the Product: Founded in 1991 IPC Media Publisher-Company: Timeinc UKPublishing director: Angela O'FarrellEditor: Colin ToughCirculation Figures:What's on TV is Time Inc. UK’s biggest selling magazine with a circulation of 997,160 which has fallen by 5.8% since last year.

Socio-Economic Needs: The stereotypical target audience for my magazine will mainly be middle or lower class individuals between the socioeconomic need categories C1-E because these are the people who are most likely able to relate to the issues raised in my soap opera. This reason for this is because soap operas primarily follow middle/lower class people as people can ‘escape’ (Katz) from their lives and watch something more tragic.

Price range-: 50-60p. The price is cheap so it is targeted to a less wealthy class, elderly or a young person who doesn't have a lot of money to buy magazines. The low cost means people who are targeted to watch the soap operas are able to buy the magazines as well to find out upcoming events.

Masthead ideas

Name Ideas:Time 4 TV-This Masthead connotes to the reader that this is a TV magazine which talks about the TV programs during the week and the schedule to find out when to watch them.

TV Talk-This masthead suggests that the magazine gives you lots of information about what is going to be on TV and gives people something to talk about to their friends (social interaction - Katz)

Weekly Watch-This Masthead sounds quite catchy and connotes to the audience that they will be able to find out what TV they will be able to watch in the upcoming week.

Verbal codes: Effective language is also placed around the magazine front covers I have seen. The effective language used such as digest, inside, revealed, exposed connotes to the reader that there is a lot of information inside of the magazine that they can read about. There is also language used that hints what is going to happen in the soap operas for example death, killer, shock which are regularly seen on soap opera magazines.

Position on the page: I will position my masthead in the top left hand corner of the page because this is where the majority of magazines put there masthead. Also the text on my logo will be short so it will fit in the corner of the page instead of stretching across the page.

Colours:Red-Red is the colour of danger ,passion or warning which suggest that the magazine warns the readers about what themes will be coming up on soap operas. Themes related to the colour red are danger, love and anger.

Orange-Orange is a bright colour and still eye-catching but it wont take away the attention from the main image and headline the is also on the front cover of the magazine.

Yellow-yellow is a very bright colour which is eye-catching so it is often used on magazines to catch the readers attention. The colour yellow can mean happiness or deceit which will be involved in many soap operas so it would be a fitting colour to use.

Font Style:Din condensed bold Phosphate InlinePoplar STDAll four fonts are Bold and basic which is perfect for a masthead because it needs to be simple but eye-catching but not too much to take away the attention from the rest of the page.I think the font I will use for my soap opera magazine will be Din condensed bold because it is the best matched font which is on my magazine of inspiration.

Main headline idea

Possible Headlines:

Love Shock: This headline gives away a plot coming up in a soap opera that it is an unexpected love story or a plot twist that is going to shock the charters and the audience watching the soap opera.

Dark secrets: This headline draws the readers attention to the page because the readers will want to know what the secrets are and what characters are involved with the story

I want to be pregnant: There is no name showing who wants to be pregnant which makes the audience feel suspense to find out who it is. It is also a happy thing which changes the mood from sad new all the time that the readers have to read about so they might like a change to read something nice about a soap.

Characters:Capital letters: The use of capital letters will also draw the readers attention to the main headline because not all of the text on the page will be written in capital letters. Like punctuation capital letters also signify the importance of the headline.Punctuation: The punctuation that could be used with my headline is an exclamation mark to draw attention to the reader and signify the importance of the headline and what it is revealing to the readers.I could also you an ellipsis to emphasise the importance of thee headline so the readers want to read on to find the main headline story.

Positioning:centre of the page: The headline Is frequently placed in the centre of the page because it signifies the importance of it. If the headline is not placed in a central position it will not catch the readers attention an they wont want to buy the magazine.Diagonally across the page:Occasionally the headline is slanted slightly so it goes diagonally across the page. However, I don’t think it is as effective as having the headline in the centre of the page. At the bottom of the page:If the main headline was at the bottom of the page it wouldn’t be effective because it would not signify the importance of the main headline and it is unlikely that it will get the readers attention.

Images Needed

Main image: The most common shot I have seen on a soap opera magazine is a medium close up shot which shows the persons face down to their elbows and the character will be looking directly at the camera. The picture is always of someone who is involved with the main story headline because they both illustrate the most important event on a soap during the upcoming week. The medium close up shot is a popular shot to use on a magazine front cover because it gives the reader a visual idea of the characters and what they characters are like through the facial expressions and body language shown.

Examples:Other Soaps:The other soaps I will choose to feature on my magazine front cover will be Coronation Street, Hollyoaks, Eastenders and Emmerdale. I am choosing these magazines because they are existing most popular soap operas in the UK. By including a variety of soap operas on my front cover my magazine will appeal to a wider audience. I will feature these soap operas in events coming up soon in case they don’t the main image interesting enough to read about.

Cover line imagery:The cover line imagery is always placed around the edge of the front cover so the readers attention is still focused on the main image rather than the smaller images on the page.

The cover line imagery is also placed in separate boxes around the front cover so the main image and the cover images don’t all merge into one, the boxes structure clearly show each separate cover line.

Mode Of Address:The characters on my magazine will be looking directly at the reader and the strapline will be below directly talking to the readers.

Other

Price:My magazine will be priced below £1 because many popular magazines such as inside soap and what's on TV cost less than £1. Because my soap magazine will be competing with similar magazines I will price my magazine between 50-60p to attract the reader more.

Puff Promotion:As seen on other soap opera magazines competition puff promotions are used to attract the reader to the magazine. This attracts to the target audience because they may be able to win something they are unable to afford otherwise

‘Buzzword’ using a buzzword attracts the reader as it brings there attention straight to the upcoming stories or spoilers in the magazine that will appeal to the readers.I would place the puff promotion under the masthead or in the top right corner of the page where it is the most visible to the reader.

Shapes:The use of shapes makes the page look more visually appealing and they also make the difference between the main image and cover images obvious as hey are separated around the edge of the pages.

Strapline Language:The strapline is featured on a magazine because the language of the strapline is to pull the audience in to buy the magazine and to promote the various soap operas on the magazine. The magazine has to stand out compared to the other magazines available so straplines used are ‘exclusive’ ,’inside’ and ‘new show'. I will place my strapline at the top of the page in capital letters to get the readers attention.

‘Everything you need to know and more’This tells the reader they can find out everything they

need to know about TV in the upcoming week and more in the magazine.

‘The most talked about TV magazine’This signifies to the reader the magazine is good

because it is the most popular magazine to read which encourages them to buy the magazine.

‘Get ahead of the soap’This strapline connotes to the reader that this magazine

offers exclusive information about the latest soap operas before they see it on TV which appeals to soap opera

fans.

Social media/synergy:Before designing my soap opera magazine front cover I

need to think about how I am going to appeal to a younger audience. The way I can do this is by

incorporating social media logos and pages people can follow on my magazine page. This should appeal to a

younger audience as they will have social media accounts and are regularly on them throughout the

day.

Mind Map - Conclusion• To be able to continue to get ideas to create my soap opera magazine I will need to go to

a shop or a supermarket to purchase a TV magazine and see what magazines stand out to me the most or catch my attention the most. When I see the magazines that look the most appealing I will purchase them and repeat the features from that magazine when I create my own magazine.

• I will definitely have to organize a day where I can take pictures of people for my front cover and also get the props that are needed to make my magazine front cover look as professional as possible. I will have to arrange to take the photos in my free time and when other people are also available. I will also have to make sure I find a font that fits with my magazine so something simple but eye-catching which is stereotypically used for a soap opera magazine.

• To create my product the software I will be using will be Adobe Photoshop CS5.This is a high quality and professional editing software where I will be able to manipulate text and images to get a professional looking magazine front cover. This will be a similar software soap opera magazines are made with, so I can make my magazine look similar to my magazine of inspiration.
