THE CONSTITUENT UNITS ARE:

STATUTORY OFFICERS OF THE UNIVERSITY

Sikkim Manipal University (SMU) came into existence on November 15, 1992 as a result of the agreement signed

between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation. The University has two campuses namely

Medical (Health Sciences) campus and the Technology and Management campus. SMU is located at 5th Mile,

Tadong which is 8 kms South of the city centre of Gangtok, the State Capital. Sikkim Manipal University is

incorporated through an Act of Sikkim State Assembly, recognized by the University Grants Commission and

approved by the Government of India.

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology is located at Majitar Village, about 35 kms south of Gangtok. Established in

1997, it offers B.Tech in seven engineering disciplines, MCA and MBA. School of Basic and Applied Sciences which is

situated at Majitar, offers M.Sc in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and M.Tech in six branches. [Most of its

Departments also conduct doctoral programs].

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences along with College of Nursing and College of Physiotherapy is co-

located with the University at 5th Mile, Tadong. SMIMS was set up in 1999. At this campus, we offer MBBS, B.Sc

Nursing and BPT courses besides Medical M.Sc programs in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physiology and Anatomy.

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) along with College of Nursing

and College of Physiotherapy is located at Tadong. SMIMS, a constituent unit of the

Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), offers MBBS, B.Sc. Nursing and Physiotherapy

courses, besides M.Sc. Programs in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Physiology and

Anatomy. The Central Referral Hospital and STNM Hospital in Gangtok offer clinical

training opportunities to students.

The Central Referral Hospital (CRH), Tadong, is a 500 bedded Tertiary care Hospital. It is

a nine storeyed building with a floor space of more than 3,00000 sq. ft. The hospital

has 21 specialties, 8 operation theatres with state of the art equipment. CRH is an ISO

9001:2000 certified hospital by BSI Management Systems with state of the art

medical record Library, Medical auditing and computerized Hospital Information

System. We function as per our carefully drafted policies and procedures with special

emphasis on infection control practices.

1. COURSE AND OBJECTIVES

1.1. Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences offers MCI recognized 4 ½ years MBBS course as per curriculum prescribed by the Medical Council of India (MCI). This course carries the educational and technical excellence, which is a hallmark of all Manipal Group organizations. During the course, students are trained in theoretical and practical aspects of basic, pre- and para-clinical subjects and receive state of the art training from fully equipped and staffed medical college and teaching hospital. The teaching hospital is a tertiary care center serving people of Sikkim and North East India, in general and offers excellent scope for hands on clinical training. The teaching staff are experienced and trained in modern teaching learning methods. SMIMS has adopted policy of constantly evolving and updating teaching learning systems in keeping in time with MCI regulations from time to time. The students are exposed to novel learning environments facilitating better learning. For example, students get exposure to seminar

presentations developing communication skills, participating in integrated teaching sessions, exposure to patient care in community setting and participation in short term research projects. The objective of training is not only to prepare the students to be responsible members of the community, but also to prepare them for higher education and training in India and abroad. The method of teaching is fully geared to achieve these objectives. SMIMS has also a scheme of teacher- guardian support system, which ensures that each student receives individualized academic and psychological support and career related counseling from members of the faculty during the entire study period. Thus, students pursuing MBBS at SMIMS not only undergo rigorous technical and training, but also receive support to become good individuals and responsible citizens of the country.

The duration of the course is 4 years class room curriculum followed by a six month internship programme. It is the only college in the entire North-East Region that is recognized by the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP).

The objective of the course is to train the undergraduates to independently evaluate, assess, diagnose, prescribe, plan and practice physiotherapy in a competent manner.

In the first two years, students have didactic lectures including the basic sciences, basic concepts of exercise therapy (regarding handling, positioning, the principles of various techniques used) and electro therapeutic modalities including the basic concepts of biophysics. The students are also posted for observational training.

During the third and fourth year, students are exposed to clinical postings which include out-patients and in-patients of the orthopedics, neurological, cardiopulmonary, obstetric and gynecology, pediatrics, surgery etc. The students thereby can gain experience in patient care including early intervention, acute care and long term treatment.

The College is attached to the Department of Physiotherapy at Central Referral Hospital that provides adequate clinical exposure to the students.

The duration of the course is 4 years. The B.Sc. Nursing

program is designed to prepare its students for

accountability for Nursing services at the primary,

secondary and tertiary levels of care.

On completion

of the course the students are essentially equipped to

work as bedside nurses as well as generalist level

medical, surgical, pediatric, psychiatric, community

health nurses and midwives. They are also expected to

take up leadership in nursing, being teachers, first level

managers and researchers.

The students are taught basic sciences and

fundamentals of Nursing during the first academic

year. They are exposed to hospital as well as

community right from the first academic year. The

subjects of specialized nursing in individual subjects of

medicine, surgery, pediatrics and psychiatry are

covered during the subsequent years.

The Sikkim Manipal College of Nursing besides four

year generic B.Sc Nursing Programme also imparts

Post Certificate B.Sc Nursing of two years duration.

The college is recognized by the Indian Nursing

Council. The degree is awarded by the University. Our

strength of annual intake is 50. Students from Sikkim

as well ad other states are eligible to admit in this

programme.

Many exciting and rewarding opportunities exist after

completion of the course. Graduates can work both in

community or institutional settings as clinical nurse,

educator or as administrator. Graduates can serve in

the capacity of a staff nurse, sister and/or a supervisor

in various branches of Nursing. There is scope for

higher education for graduates. One can attain Master

degree, M.Phil and Doctorate in Nursing. Nursing

administration, nursing education and nursing

research are the areas where nurses with Master,

M.Phil and Doctorate in nursing are having very

attractive positions.

The Duration of the course is 5 years. The objective

of the course is to impart expertise to the students

and to enable them to join the main stream of

medical biotechnology based teaching and research

activities.

The Duration of the course is 3 years. This course aims

to provide the students with adequate knowledge and

skills to carry out routine and sophisticated laboratory

diagnostic procedures. At the end of course they are

expected to have sufficient theoretical and practical

knowledge related to the principles of the laboratory

exercises and also to deal with new advances in

instrumentation, methodology or standardization,

management of laboratories, standard protocols.

All these M.Sc. Degree courses are a three year

programme consisting of classroom teaching, self

study, seminars, research project (dissertation),

practical and demonstration classes.

All the M.Sc. programmes have a foundation course of

one year consisting of fundamentals of Anatomy,

Physiology, and Biochemistry. In the second year the

students proceed to their respective departments for

theoretical and practical classes. In the third year they

will undertake self study and dissertation work.

The Sikkim Manipal College of Physiotherapy offers a

two years Master of Physiotherapy Course and follows

a generic curriculum. It is the only college in the North

Eastern India to offer post graduate program in

Physiotherapy. The objectives of this post graduate

ethical practice in all the areas of physiotherapy care,

especially within the area of specialty, to acquire skills

required to be an effective theoretical & clinical

teacher Physiotherapy, to be proficient in research

methods and to learn elements of administration in

order to be an effective Physiotherapy administrator.

Specialty: Manual Therapy, Sports, Adult Neurology,

Pediatric Neurology, Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation,

Occupational Health and Women's Health.

All candidates must be 17 years of age or older as on

December 31, 2011.

The candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent

examination with minimum aggregate of 50% marks in

Physics, Chemistry and Biology /Bio-technology (40%

of aggregate marks for SC/ST/OBC) with pass marks in

each subject and English.

The candidate must have passed (10+2) or equivalent

examination with Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Bio-

technology with minimum 45% aggregate marks (40%

marks for SC/ST/OBC), having secured pass marks in

individual subject.

All candidates must be at least 17 years or older as on

December 31, 2011.

The candidate must have passed (10+2) or equivalent

examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and

English with minimum 45% aggregate marks in PCBE

(40% marks for SC/ST/OBC) with pass marks in

individual subject.

Pass in G.N.M after 10+2 or equivalent preferably with

science subjects. Candidates should be a registered

Nurse and Midwife or equivalent with any State

Nursing Council of India.

Only female candidates are eligible for

admission in Nursing Courses and as per West Bengal

Nursing Council it is a residential course.

Physiotherapy examination from an institution/

University full time, in-campus BPT course program

duly recognized by the Indian Association of

Physiotherapists and have secured a minimum of

50% of marks in aggregate. Candidates who are

presently doing their BPT internship are also eligible to

apply, but their admission to the course program is stsubject to their internship completion on or before 31

July 2011.

The candidate must have passed a 3 years B.Sc. course

in any branch of Life Sciences i.e. Physiology, Zoology,

Botany, Microbiology and Chemistry. General category

candidate must have secured minimum 55% and the

reserved category (SC/ST) candidate must have

secured 50% in aggregate, in life Sciences subjects in

B.Sc.

In addition, all parents/guardians of NRI/NRI

sponsored candidates must produce a bank guarantee

for tuition fees for the first year duration of course at

the time of admission. In case bank guarantee cannot

be produced at the time of admission, the admission

will be provisional. The said bank guarantee will have

to be produced within one month from the date of

admission failing which admission will be cancelled.

Criteria for consideration under different categories

Applicants seeking admission under this category

Wards of active defence personnel are eligible to be

considered under this category provided, parent(s) of

the candidate, who is a defence personel must be

borne on strength of a military unit located in Sikkim as

on 1.1.2011. Admissions are made on the basis of rank

obtained in the UGET1.

For eligibility for consideration in this category the

following certificates are to be produced by the

parents along with the application:

(1) Certificate from Commandant/Commanding

Officer/Adjutant of their respective units

showing at least 5 years of active service. (2) Copy of posting order to Sikkim. (3) Copy of joining report from appropriate

authority based in Sikkim. (D/O Part II

order/casualty)

Permanent residents of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh,

Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur and

Sikkim are eligible to apply. Domicile/permanent

residence certificate from the appropriate authority in

respect of applicant /parent of the applicant is

essential for consideration in this category.

Admissions are made on the basis of rank obtained in

the UGET1.

One seat is reserved for offsprings of permanent staff

of SMU. They will have to fulfill the criteria laid down

by the University and the candidate will have to appear

in UGET1.

Any candidate who is a citizen of India is eligible to

apply under this category. Admissions are based on

merit obtained in the UGET1. In addition to these, any

vacant seat from other categories will also be filled

under this category.

Candidates are required to apply separately and

admission will be given after screening conducted by

SMU. The date of screening will be intimated after

receipt of appl icat ions. I f the candidate

himself/herself is not an NRI, then he/she may be

sponsored by his/her father, mother, brother, sister,

uncle or aunt, grandparent. For the purpose of

percentage of marks in the qualifying examination

candidates qualifying from Foreign Universities are

required to submit the equivalent grading/percentage

of marks from AIU (Association of Indian Universities,

New Delhi), address of which is given subsequently.

examination conducted by SMU.

For MBBS course a general category candidate

has to secure minimum 50% marks in aggregate (PCB)

and for ST, SC and OBC 45% marks in aggregate

(Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Bio-technology) in UGET

conducted by SMU.

Counseling and admission will be at SMU, Gangtok.

intimation sent by post. The candidates are strongly

advised to look up our websites regularly without fail.

Medical Admission will be based on the inter-se merit

of the candidates on the basis of marks obtained in

10+2 (or equivalent) qualifying examination.

Admission will be on the basis of rank of candidates

under different category in the Entrance Examination

conducted by Manipal University. For details visit

website: www.manipal.ed. Applicant have to submit

the rank along with the application.

Admission is strictly based on merit (marks obtained in

life sciences subjects namely Botany, Zoology,

Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology in B.Sc Part I, II

and III. Those appearing in B.Sc Final should send a

copy of a final marks sheet as soon as the result are

declared by fax or any other mode but not later than

14th August 2011. While enclosing marks sheet of Part

I, II and III the applicant should ensure that the reverse

of the original marks sheet is also copied.

In the application form, at least two choices are to be

mentioned in course applied for according to

preference.

Admission will be based on the inter-se merit of the

candidates on the basis of marks obtained in G.N.M

after 10+2.

The library has more than 10500 text and reference

books and subscribes to 200 E-Journals and 92

National and International journals. Internet and

Medline facilities are available for students and

faculty.

The Institute is fully residential. All undergraduate

students are required to stay in the hostel. Only

permanent local residents are exempted. The nine

storeyed building houses 200 rooms. Each room is

furnished with a mattress, a study table, a chair, a

cupboard/shelf for each student. Every room has an

attached toilet, service area and hot water facility. An

exclusive dining hall with a modern kitchen and mess is

also housed in the hostel building. The mess provides

vegetarian / non-vegetarian meals. Dining in the mess

is compulsory for all inmates of the hostel. The

students of first year will be provided with 3 seated

rooms.

framed in consultat ion with experienced

academicians from IITs and other universities and

keeping in pace with present day needs and with an

industrial bias. Curricula not only cover the requisites

of electrical engineering but also some subjects in

communications, electronics and computer fields. The

department also has also got faculty members with

industry experiment. Students shall have hands on practical training in well-

Students have undertaken projects in several big

industries like TATA Honeywell, Wipro, CESC, Stelsalit,

Power Microsystems, NHPC, TCS, Siemens, CTS, etc.

This has helped students to secure sound placements

within and outside India. Through in-campus

placements, students have been placed in CTS, TCS,

Stelsalit, HCL etc.

The Department is successfully running post

graduation course with specialization in Power

Electronics and Ph.D. program.

Mechanical Engineering Department, the oldest

department of the Institute, offers B. Tech. degree.

The Department is also conducting other University

programs like M. Tech. and Ph.D. in Mechanical

Engineering. The Department has well-equipped

equipments/machineries as per the requirement of

machine tools, the department also has CNC machines

The department has also established the Non-

conventional Machining Lab, Automobile Lab and

Civil Engineering Department was opened from 2009

academic session with an intake of 60 students for

B.Tech program. This is one of the most sought after

stream all over the country. The Department is being

developed with the state-of-the-art laboratories and

teaching methodologies. Students of the Department

will be exposed to the latest advancements in design

and construction technologies with sufficient field

exposures.

Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering

Department has been established with the help of well

established Department of Electronics and

Communication Engineering in the year 2009 with an

intake of 60 students for B.Tech. program. This is one of

the most preferred stream of Engineering to cater the

present needs of the electronics industries globally.

The Department is being established with the state-of-

the-art labs and teaching methodologies. Students of

the Department will be exposed to the latest

advancements in research and development in the

area.

The Department has a team of strong faculty members

to give the required base in Physics to all budding

engineers, which help them throughout, even during

specialization in various Engineering Streams. The

Department also offers its services to other streams

This Department provides students with fundamental

Composite Materials Environmental Pollution and its

Department is endowed with vibrant & dynamic

faculty, well qualified to impart high quality teaching.

The Department also has vibrant ongoing research

with number of Ph.D. students.

It offers courses for all branches of Engineering. The

Syllabi are framed in such a manner that it covers most

of the engineering applications that are necessary for

modern trend and covers areas in Information

equivalent with Physics (P) & Mathematics (M) as

compulsory subjects and Chemistry or Computer

Sciences or Biotechnology or Biology, as one of the

optional subjects. They must have secured a minimum

of 50% marks in aggregate in these subjects to be

considered for selection (45% for SC/ST/OBC).

(ii) A candidate with a diploma in the appropriate

branch of engineering awarded by a State Board of

Technical Education, and with at least 50% in

aggregate in diploma is also eligible for admission to

the first year of B Tech (45% for SC/ST/OBC) through

entrance examination.

(iii) Appearing candidates are also eligible to apply.

However, their results should be sent to SMIT by fax as

soon as the result is declared. Application number

must be indicated on the copy of the result.

Candidates will have to appear for one of the entrance

examinations depending upon the category under

which they are seeking admission. The details of these

examinations according to categories are given in the

succeeding paragraphs.

The candidates will have to appear

for the AIEEE to be conducted by the CBSE. The

candidates are also required to fill up the SMIT

application form and submit the same to SMIT by

prescribed date. Candidates should intimate their

AIEEE ranking to SMIT by fax as soon as the AIEEE

results are declared. They must send the downloaded

rank along with a Xerox copy of the original application

form already sent in order to be eligible for counseling

and admission. Counseling will be conducted at SMIT

on the dates mentioned separately in this prospectus.

Candidates seeking admission under this

category should be Foreign Nationals / Persons of

Indian Origin (PIO)/ Children of Indian Workers in the

Gulf Countries. Admission under this category will be

given after screening conducted by SMU. If the

candidate himself/herself is not an NRI, then he/she

may be sponsored by his/her father, mother, brother,

sister, uncle or aunt, grandparent who must be an NRI.

Eligibility under this category is similar as mentioned in

Para 2.1.b (i) & (ii) above. Candidates qualifying from

Foreign Universities are required to submit the

equivalent grading/percentage of marks from AIU

(Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi).

Note:

(i) Candidates may be permitted under certain

eligibility conditions and subject to availability of seats

in the second year of engineering (III Semester). Such

admission shall be made at the beginning of the

academic year within a maximum period of thirty days

after the commencement of the semester. A candidate

seeking transfer from another university should have

cleared all subjects of the previous year/semester

prescribed by the parent university, and should

produce the original marks card and a certificate to

that effect from that university. Candidate will also

produce NOC from the previous institute.

(ii) Such students should also satisfy all other

conditions of eligibility as prescribed by Sikkim

Manipal University.

Candidates can apply for the direct entry to second

year of Bachelor of Technology programme fulfilling

the following criteria:

(i) Three years' diploma in appropriate branch of

Engineering with minimum 60% marks in aggregate.

However, a relaxation of 5% may be considered for

SC/ST/OBC candidates.

(ii) Three years' B.Sc. degree with Mathematics as one

of the subjects, with minimum 60% marks in

aggregate. However, a relaxation of 5% may be

considered for SC/ST/OBC candidates.

technical books. The Developing Library Network

SMIT in collaboration with NASSCOM. The

To provide in-plant training to students to

supplement their curriculum.

To arrange the final semester industrial

projects to work on live problems (Practice

Schools).

campus for recruitment of students.

To achieve these objectives, the Department organizes

courses and training programmes to enhance the

aptitude and skill of the students to increase

employability. Regular feedbacks are also obtained

from the industries on the advances in technology vis-

à-vis the facilities in the Institute and appropriate

actions are taken.

T & P Department also organizes events like seminars,

workshops, guest lectures and corporate interactions.

Yet another unique scheme of the institute is the

teacher guardian scheme. Under this, each student is

allotted a specific teacher guardian who provides

emotional support, monitors academic performance,

provides necessary guidance to the ward and

communicates all such details regularly to the parents

of the ward. This scheme has received tremendous

support from students and parents alike.

This is a contributory benevolent fund which seeks to

provide financial assistance to needy students. The

Executive Committee comprising of faculty members

and students participates in the selection of

beneficiaries. Twenty three students mainly those

who lost their earning parent, has been benefited

from this fund till date.

The Institute has a well equipped dispensary and

resident doctors with supporting staff. Those needing

specialized treatment are sent to Central Referral

Hospital in an ambulance available round the clock.

Medical Group Insurance is provided for medical

reimbursements.

The Alumni Association was established in November

students' clubs, and is supported by staff advisors.

Arts and Photography Clubs.

The Sports Club regularly organizes

games and sports. Facilities for Volleyball, Tennis,

Basketball and many indoor games are available.

mentioned sports, the club also encourages talented

(ACCESS) aims to spot academic and professional

talent within the Dept, inspires it to grow, nurtures it in

right direction and provides it a platform to project

itself to the students' community of SMIT in particular

and outside world, in general. This year ACCESS

organized a number of workshops, short-term courses

and competitions. Under students for students

program, Animation Workshop and two weeks VB

Course, amongst many others, were huge success with

demands for repeat performance. Confidence,

smoothness, and ease of our student speakers on

stage were a delight to see.

It was formed in the year 1999 with objectives of

supplementing the knowledge acquired in the class

and also by encouraging the students to apply their

theoretical knowledge into practical aspects. It had

organized technical fair at Institute level in which the

students of won first three prizes. The past

achievements of are the selection of students in

ELECRAMA-2007, the third International Exhibition of

Electrical and Industrial Electronic Industry organized

by IEEMA.

Institute that includes the faculty members and

students as its members and has proved a platform to

develop the overall personality especially for the

students of the Department besides their regular

academic aspects. This Society has so far actively

carried out Debate/ Essay Writing Competition among

the students. It brings out a wall magazine 'DISHARI'

every semester, to exhibit their literary skills.

It was formed with an aim of encouraging and

promoting innovative ideas of the students and to

ensure their all-round development. To achieve this

objective, the association organizes Seminars / talks

by eminent personalities from academia / industries.

Industrial tours are organized to supplement their

theoretical knowledge. Arrangements of cultural

nights, get-together and annual Viswakarma Puja help

the students to excel on their managerial and

organizational skill.

FORUM-2K is a students' body managed by the

students of Department of Information Technology

under the supervision and guidance of the members

of Faculty of the Department. FORUM -2K organizes

different activities such as Technical Workshop,

Cultural Events, Sports Events etc regularly mainly for

the students by the students. This students' body also

publishes a wall magazine and another technical

magazine annually to which the students as well as the

members of faculty contribute articles, discussions

etc. SAMAJ is a special group under FORUM -2K, which

is responsible for different community services such as

organizing free health camp, education camp etc for

the people of the surrounding areas. It is worthy to

mention that any student of Sikkim Manipal Institute

of Technology can become member of FORUM- 2K.

It is an active society for enhancing the managerial

competencies, skills and overall development of the

students. It is, engaged in different activities like

inviting guest lecturers from industries and other

educational institutions, conducting seminars,

industrial visits, presentations, debates, group

discussions, mock interviews and other management

games. Picnic and other get together are also arranged

for team building and fun.

Group of SMIT Science Society is registered with the

Science and Technology Department of Government

of Sikkim and also with Vigyan Sanchar Network of

India. The primary aim of this club is to inculcate

scientific temperament among the students.

Organization of quizzes, seminars and workshops is an

integral feature of the club that gives student a

glimpse of the latest development taking place in the

front tier of science and technology. It is also a

breeding ground for innovative ideas that comes via

interaction of the faculty members and students.

The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) has

accredited SMIT for all the five B.Tech courses

offered by SMIT vide their letter No. NBA/ACCR-

860/06 dated: Jan 22, 2008.

9001:2000 certification and the same has been

certified under Norsk Akkreditering, Norway.

SMU has signed MOU with Adhesion Institute,

faculty of Aerospace Engineering, Delft University

of Technology (TU Delft), The Netherlands and has

established an International centre for

Nanotechnology & Applied Adhesion (ICNTAA) at

SMIT. It has 11 internationally acclaimed experts

around the world as advisors.

A Centre for Excellence in Remote Sensing & GIS

11. FEE CONSESSION AND FEE WAIVER SCHEMES

11.1 Freeships:

It is awarded to meritorious candidates admitted to B.Tech. course. The awarded students need not to pay tuition and lab fee until the completion of the course. However, the student will be required to pay the caution deposit and onetime fee. It will not cover the expenses such as hostel accommodation, messing, book, etc. It will be discontinued if student fails to get promotion to next year or promoted with back papers. Total 30 Freeships will be awarded in the following way:

? First 10 candidates admitted under AIEEE

category having all India rank within 50,000.

? First 10 candidates admitted under UGET2 &

MU-ENAT category having rank within 1000

rank of joint merit of UGET2 & MU-ENAT.

? First 10 candidates scored more than 90%

marks in PCM at 10+2 level. (Not applicable for

NRI category)

75% concession in tuition fees is given to students

sponsored by Govt. of Sikkim.

As per AICTE notification No. 37-03/Legal/2007 under this scheme, tuition fee of girls, economically weaker and physically handicapped meritorious students is waived. The ratio of awarded girls, economically weaker and physically handicapped meritorious students is 2:3:1. The students will get the benefit of this scheme if intake exceeds the strength of sanctioned intake. Maximum up to 10% over and above sanctioned strength of admitted is eligible for the scheme.

1. ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS

1.1 Department of Physics

Full time 2 year M.Sc. (Physics) course approved by

UGC was started by Department of Physics from 1999.

The Department also offers 5 year integrated M.Sc.

Physics course. The Department is proud to have team

of very experienced and dedicated faculty members

with varied specialization in Particle, Plasma,

Condensed matter Physics and Electronics.

Specializations in above areas are offered to the

students as a choice in the second year. The University

as per the requirement of UGC has erected adequate

laboratory facilities. The Department has upgraded its

laboratory and Research facility by funds from

Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India

under FIST program. It has a dedicated Computer

Center with internet facility where students learn

programming languages like C/C++ /Graphics

/Simulation Techniques and get hands-on practice of

various software packages like Mathematica, PSPICE,

GESNAT4 used for research level programming.

Students' carryout a research Project in second year as

a part of the curriculum. Through the research project,

they learn advance research problems, which make

them suitable for later research.

The Department offers PhD program in all above

specializations and gives the appropriate research

environment for young physicists. The Department

also offers Teaching Assistantships to deserving

candidates based on vacancy to pursue the research in

the Department.

The school is located on the bank of River Teesta surrounded by green hills, which add to the vibrancy

of the campus, and makes it an ideal place for learning. It offers postgraduate courses in Basic

Sciences and undergraduate courses in Computer Application. All courses offered in the School are

approved by SMU and UGC and are accredited by NS-EN ISO 9001:2000. The School has its campus

at Majitar, Rangpo East Sikkim. At SBAS, the focus is on high quality education and research with

special emphasis on faculty-student interaction. Course and teaching methodologies are up-to-date

with present emerging trends. Students are well groomed and nurtured for career in

industries/higher education/research. Curriculum includes extensive interaction with industries

through well-designed projects. The School organizes events like seminars, workshops, conferences

Another project undergoing in the department

“Investigation of propagation of ion acoustic wave in

Plasma Sheath and Presheath” is supported by DST,

Department of Chemistry is offering M.Sc. in

chemistry for the last six years. Within six years, the

Department has evolved as a mature contributor in

Indian academia. It covers all major areas of chemistry,

viz. Inorganic, Organic and Physical chemistry. The M.

Sc. syllabus, which is comparable with all leading

universities / institutes, caters to the intellectual

aspirations of the students and they are exposed to

the latest in the field. The students have opportunity

to take specialized courses of their choice (Medicinal

Chemistry, Biophysical Chemistry, Chemistry of

Nanomaterials, Polymer Chemistry, Bio-inorganic

A leading industry from Sikkim, SICPA Ltd. India awards

scholarship to meritorious students of M.Sc. The

scholarship is given to two students from Sikkim and

two students from General category, which amounts

to the tuition fee paid by the respective candidate.

The department has a Society of Chemical Sciences

(SCS) comprising of students and teachers. It organizes

regular seminars, workshops, lectures in science in

general and Chemistry in particular. The students are

also provided inputs on career planning, personality

development and soft skills.

In addition to that, (SCS) also provides –

Consultancy serviceProject WorkResearch work in various challenging areas.

Department welcomes students for Ph.D. programme

(part time/full time). Chemistry department has an

ongoing research project entitled “Synthesis and

development of new porphyrin templates for the

construction of mesoporous materials” supported by

DST, Govt. of India. A few JRFs are working under the

projects and is pursuing their Ph. D.

The department offers Master degree program (M.Sc)

in Mathematics. Pure and applied mathematics

courses are offered and keeping in mind the job

or may continue with M.Sc programme. As per AICTE, students with B.Sc. degree are eligible for lateral entry to B.Tech. 2nd year, subject to availability of seats. During the first year, every student is required to take courses in all the four areas of basic sciences, viz. M a t h e m a t i c s , P h y s i c s , C h e m i s t r y a n d Computer/Information Technology. Those who may not have taken courses in the secondary schools in any of the above subjects will be given a bridge course. The next two years will be devoted to studies of undergraduate level Physics, Chemistry and Maths (Honours).

In addition to core postgraduate subjects, interdisciplinary courses will be introduced in emerging areas in 4th and 5th year to provide students with good career opportunities. The coursework will be supplemented by innovative laboratory work in well-equipped laboratories and hands on experience in Workshops. During the second and third years, students will choose a major subject in Physics, Chemistry and Maths and may take optional interdisciplinary courses in consultation with their Academic Advisors. During the 4th year, special focus in specialized areas of Physics, Chemistry and Maths will be given and in the 5th year, students will devote a major part of their time in a research and/or training project supplemented by suitable coursework.

Students will be given research orientation throughout their course and laboratory work. Students will be required to spend part of their summer vacations in leading research groups in either SMU or other national research institutes or R&D labs in industry. A key aspect of the charter and vision of SMU is to foster close collaboration with various Research Institutes, Universities and Industry to take advantage of the available talent and facilities therein and to provide multiple career options to students. The syllabus of SMU will evolve dynamically to be flexible; credit based, and offers students a broad platform. It will take note of new developments in the field of science and its applications. Candidates must choose a test centre, date and slot of

choice by using the Online Booking System (OTBS) at

www.smu.edu.in Candidates will not be issued e-hall

ticket without booking a slot through OTBS.

Candidates will have to provide the application form

number, password (available in the scratch card).

Candidates are required to book their slots using the

OTBS as per the schedule given below. Please note

that the OTBS will not allow the candidate after the

booking end date.

Candidates can choose slots of their choice on a first-

come-first-served basis and subject to availability. If a

candidate is unable to book a slot in a centre of his

choice, he may book a slot in an alternate centre.

A slot booked cannot be changed. Requests for change

of test centre, date or slot will not be entertained

under any circumstances.

In addition, if for any reason, including poor response

of candidates for appearing at a particular centre, a

test centre has to be cancelled, the candidates who

had opted for that centre will be allotted another

centre. The university will inform such candidates

important document, it must be preserved and

produced at the time of counseling/admission.

Report to the selected test centre with the two copies

of the e-hall ticket, one photocopy of the application

form and any one of the following for photo

identification:

Passport/driving license/EC voter ID card/IT PAN card

or School/College photo-bearing ID card.

Candidates should arrive at the test centre as per the

reporting time mentioned in the e-hall ticket. There

will be an on-site orientation prior to the start of the

test. If a candidate arrives after the on-site orientation

has begun, he/she will not be allowed to take the test.

The test hall will be opened 30 minutes before the

commencement of the test.

If candidates do not report in time, they are likely to

miss some of the general instructions to be announced

in the test hall. Candidates coming after the

commencement of the test are not permitted to sit for

the test.

The candidate has to register his/her name in the

registration counter (only for online test). The e-hall

tickets of the candidates will be checked to satisfy

about the identity of each candidate.

Candidates will not be allowed to carry any textual

material, printed or written, bits of papers or any other

material except the e-hall ticket inside the test hall.

facilities of calculators, laptop or palmtop computers,

personal stereo systems, walkie-talkie sets, mobile

phones, paging devices or any other object/device

that is likely to be of unfair assistance.

No candidate will be allowed to go outside the test hall

till the completion of the entire duration of time. Once

the candidates leave the hall (even if only to answer a

call of nature) they cannot return under any

circumstances. Smoking in the test hall is strictly

prohibited. Tea, coffee, cold drinks or snacks are also

not allowed to be taken into the test hall.

There are no waiting facilities for family and friends at

the test centre. Candidates should plan to meet them

elsewhere after the test ends.

4.3. Regulations At The Test Centre

Candidates must sign the attendance sheet in the

presence of the invigilator. The invigilator will also put

his/her signature in the place provided in the e-hall

ticket.

Each question carries one mark. Each correct answer

will be awarded one mark. The unanswered questions

/wrong answers will receive no mark.

The salient features of the computer based ONLINE

entrance test are:

The candidate sits in front of the computer and

the questions are presented on the monitor

and the candidate submits his answers

through the use of mouse. The computer is

connected to the server, which delivers the

test, in real time through a reliable

connectivity.

Online Entrance Test assumes that the

candidate has basic familiarity with use of

computers like use of keyboard and mouse

operation. It is the responsibility of the

candidate to acquire these skills before

appearing in the test and the University cannot

take responsibility for the same.

In the event of rare and unlikely a technical

failure during the test, the candidate may be

required to attempt the test again.

regularly to obtain latest news, information

and updates on online entrance test.

Candidates shall maintain perfect silence and attend to their questions only. All actions of the candidate in the test hall will be closely monitored using web cameras and closed circuit TV cameras. Any conversation or gesticulation or disturbance in the test hall shall be deemed as misbehavior and if a candidate is found using unfair means or impersonation, his/her candidature will be cancelled and will be liable to be debarred from taking examination either permanently or for a specified period to be decided by the University. The university reserves the right to withhold the result of such candidates.

(Written) Test

4.6.1 Answer Sheet

Each candidate is given a seat with a computer. Candidates must find out and occupy their allotted seats at least 15 minutes before the commencement of the test.

The candidates must ensure that the computer allotted to them is switched on and any problem with the computer should be informed to the invigilator immediately.

The questions appearing on the screen will be in English. All questions will be of the Multiple Choice Question (MCQ type).

Each MCQ will consist of a stem which may be in the form of a question or an incomplete statement and four responses labeled A, B, C and D. one of the four responses only is the correct or most appropriate answer. Candidates must choose the correct or most appropriate answer by clicking on the button next to the answer. Candidates can navigate freely through the questions.

The Final score will be displayed in the test screen immediately after the test. The candidates should acknowledge the score in the printout of the score card in the presence of the invigilator.

All rough work should be done in the paper/s supplied

in the test centre. No paper/s should be taken to the

test hall for this purpose

The mock test will be made available to the candidates

in the website www.smu.edu.in. It is mainly designed

to provide the candidates a feel of the test flow and its

different components. The mock test will give the

candidate an idea of all the features of the online test.

Written test is conducted only for B.Tech.

i). 15 minutes before the commencement of the

test, an answer sheet will be given.

Candidates must ensure that the answer

sheet they have received is correct and

properly printed on both sides.

ii). The hall ticket number and the test booklet

numbers as filled by the candidate in the

answer sheet will be accepted as final for the

purpose of evaluation. When these numbers

are not written or written wrongly, the answer

sheet will not be evaluated.

iii). The candidate will be solely responsible for

any error/omission in filling up the hall ticket

and the test booklet number.

On the front of the answer sheet the candidate must

write his/her name (in capital letters) and hall ticket

number in the appropriate places using Hi-Tec type

black pen.

i). On the reverse, candidates must write hall

ticket number and test booklet number in

Arabic numerals in appropriate boxes using a

Hi-Tec point type black pen and also

completely darken corresponding circles.

i). At scheduled time for the commencement of

the test, the candidate will receive a test

booklet. Candidates must ensure that the test

booklet received by them is correct and

printed properly. Each test booklet has a

specific five digit test booklet number on the

front page. Candidates must write this number

on the reverse of their answer sheets and

blacken circles at the appropriate place.

ii). The order of questions is not same in all test

booklets. Candidates should never change

their test booklets during the test.

response is marked in any wrong manner as

vi). No candidate will be allowed to leave the

examination hall during the duration of the

test.

vii). Candidates are advised to bring with them a

cardboard or a clipboard on which nothing is

written so that they have no difficulty in

writing responses in the answer sheet if the

tables provided in the examination hall do

not have a smooth surface.

viii). Smoking in the examination hall is strictly

prohibited.

ix). Tea, cuff, cold drinks and snacks are not

allowed to be taken inside the examination

hall.

Any candidate found indulging in unfair means or

impersonation will be debarred from taking the

examination and his/her candidature will be

cancelled. All impersonation cases will be handed over

to law Enforcement authorities.

University will not take responsibility to inform these

candidates. Such candidates will not be able to access

the Online Test Booking System.

Candidates are hence advised to ensure that the

application is duly filled and dispatched along with

other enclosures complete in all respect.

Rank will be based on the total marks obtained in

Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Mathematics and English

in the UGET in case of tie the rank will be decided on

the basis of marks scored by the candidate(s) in

Biology /Mathematics. In case of further tie the rank

will be decided on the basis of the marks obtained in

Chemistry followed by Physics and finally the tie at this

stage will be decided by the marks scored in PCB/M

(Physics, Chemistry and Biology /Mathematics) in

10+2 (qualifying examination).

The list of candidates eligible to attend the counseling ,

counseling schedule, venue and other relevant details

will be made available in the website www.smu.edu.in

Physical presence of the candidate at the counseling is

mandatory. If a candidate is prevented by unavoidable

circumstances from being physically present for the

counseling, he/she may authorize another individual

to represent him/her at the counseling (except for

MBBS). This representative must carry the

authorization letter and must bring all documents and

full fee. Absence of the candidate or his/her

representative at the indicated reporting time and

date will result in the instantaneous forfeiture of any

claim for a seat.

The choice of course made by the candidate/

representative is final and binding and cannot be

altered under any circumstances.

Only the candidate/representative will be allowed into

the counseling hall. They will be called in the order of

their ranks and offered the seats available at that point

of time. They are permitted to choose any of the seats

available during their turn.

The number of candidates included in the merit list

and also those called for counseling will be more than

the total number of seats available in the constituent

colleges. This is to take care of any drop outs at the

counseling stage. Mere inclusion in the merit list and

call for counseling does not guarantee admission to a

course. This will exclusively depend on the candidate's

rank, the number of candidates attending the

counseling, their choice of course and the number of

seats available.

The admission in SMU is purely on the merit basis.

SMU does not appoint any agent to facilitate the

admission process. For any clarification, please

contact the admission committee members.

The university is an institution meant for higher

learning and the objective is not only to impart

education but also to build up the character of the

students and transform them into better human

beings. The students are, therefore, expected to

observe proper discipline in their conduct during the

entire period they spend with the university.

Regulations are designed to ensure that the conduct

of students and their discipline are up to required

After the enquiry, penalties ranging from fines,

warnings, to expulsion from the institute can be

awarded as per the regulations.

The Hon'ble Supreme Court has directed that ragging

be banned from all educational institutions. Ragging

has been made a cognizable offence and it attracts a

punishment of rigorous imprisonment of up to three

years and a fine of Rs. 25,000/-. Ragging has been

defined as: “Any act causing, inducing, compelling or

forcing a student, whether by way of a practical joke or

otherwise, to do any act which detracts from human

dignity or violates his person or exposes him to ridicule

or forbears from doing any lawful act, by intimidating,

wrongfully restraining, wrongfully confining, or

injuring him or by using criminal force to him or by

holding out to him any threat of such intimidation,

wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement, injury or

the use of criminal force”.

At SMIMS & SMIT, we have always attempted to foster

a strong vibrant and warm relationship amongst the

senior and junior students. An interactive session

between senior and junior students is conducted in

the presence of teachers. Any interaction beyond this

invites harsh punishment that may take any of the

following forms depending upon the severity of

offence:-Suspension from classes/hostel

Debarring from appearing in examination

Rustication from the college for a period up to

two years

Expulsion from the college

Fine up to Rs.25,000/- by a court of law

Every student admitted to SMIMS or SMIT or SBAS his/

her parents/ guardians are required to sign an

undertaking (Annexure I & II) that the student will

desist from indulging in ragging.

Students are requested to attend a minimum of 75% of

the total classes actually held in each subject up to the

end of the year. A candidate who does not satisfy the

above requirement of attendance shall not be

permitted to appear for the entire university

NOTE:

13. WITHDRAWAL & REFUND OF FEES

1. Calculation of total Fee (Rs.): Amount given in Table 1 as per course & category + Amount given in Table 2 as per the location of Hostel.

2. Registration Fee is ̀ . 10,000/- which is included in fee.

3. Caution Deposit will be refunded after completion of the course at the time of convocation.

4. Mess Deposit (as per actual).

5. Installment facility is available for technical courses, MBA, Int. M.Sc and M.Sc (Mathematic/ Chemistry/ Physics).

6. The University reserves its rights to provide hostel facility for Skill Development Courses.

7. Allotment of Hostel depends on the course opted.

8. One new laptop will be given to each B.Tech Student.

13.1. Once a Student is admitted to any course of study, usually no refund of fee is permitted on withdrawal/absence from college for any reasons.

13.2. A refund claim may however be admitted on merits after due consideration of the request by the college and the amount to be refunded shall be within the limit stated below. Candidates admitted in Engineering & Basic Science courses are informed that payment of fees by installment is only a facility given to them. However, the amount of fees to be forfeited will be worked out based on total fees payable for the whole year.

13.3. Registration fee is not refundable in any circumstances.

13.4 Deposits: All deposits such as caution deposit, mess advance etc. lying to the credit of the

student as on the date of withdrawal/ cancellation of admission shall be refunded to the student after adjusting all dues of the student (if any).

13.5 Student withdrawing before starting of the course the entire fee collected will be refunded deducting Rs. 1000/- (as procession fees).

13.6 Any student admitted in Medical or Allied Health Sciences courses who withdraws from the course after 30th September 2011 will be required to remit to the college, in addition to the fees already forfeited, 100% of the TUITION FEE APPLICABLE FOR THE WHOLE COURSE.

13.7 Any student admitted in Engineering & Basic Science courses who withdraws from the course.

Within 90 days after commencement of classes : Proportionate deduction of course fee on monthly basis.

After expiry of 90 days but before completion of one semester will be required to remit to the college, in addition to the fees already forfeited, 50% of the TUITION FEE APPLICABLE FOR THE REMAINING PERIOD OF THE COURSE.

After completion of one semester : 100% fees of 1st year will be forfeited. In addition to this amount an amount equal to 50% of the Tuition fee applicable for the remaining period of the course.

However, students declared not fit for technical education on academic grounds, will not be required to pay 50% of the tuition fees for the remaining period of their course.

13.8. In all cases where the student withdraws after the commencement of classes the amount refunded will be after proportionate deduction of Tuition fee, Lab fee, Hostel fee on monthly basis plus registration fee.

Getting to Sikkim

By Air Jet Airways, Air Deccan, Kingfisher Airlines and Indian Airlines operate flights from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati to Bagdogra. From the airport one can take a taxi to the campus of SMIT& SBAS, Majitar and SMIMS, Tadong- Gangtok - the drive takes about three to four hours. One can also use the services of chartered helicopters to travel between Gangtok and Bagdogra.

By Train One can travel by train from any part of the country to New Jalpaiguri or Siliguri. From here the journey to the campus, which takes 3 to 4 hours, can be made by bus or taxi.

By Road Long distance buses ply from major towns in West Bengal, Bihar and Assam to Siliguri. The journey from Siliguri to the campus can be made by taxi or bus via the Himalayan foothills along the Teesta and Rangit rivers and passing through the towns of Teestabazar, Melli and Rangpo.

A word of caution: Applicants are advised to be careful against possible cheating by unscrupulous agenc ies who may put out mis lead ing advertisements in newspapers or approach by other means, promising and assuring seats for various courses for monetary considerations or by ex t ra c t i n g l a rg e s u m s o f m o n e y f ro m candidates/parents. SMU wishes to authoritatively refute all such misleading false claims and advertisements. The seats for all the courses offered by SMU can be secured only by merit in the qualifying examination/entrance test. We have no agents or middlemen for admissions.
