    3. Tracking your Android

Once your account is setup correctly, each time you login to the SmrtGuard Web Dashboard, our system will try to locate your Android Smartphone.

What is the purpose and value of the SmrtGuard Web Dashboard and the Locating/Tracking features?

We are here to help you determine whether your Android Smartphone has simply been misplaced or is

non-recoverable, for example if it has been stolen.

To help you locate a misplaced device you can send it an Audio Ping command. This will make the Android play an audio alert for ten minutes, or until you find it. If the device is non-recoverable you can

send it a Self-Destruct command to remotely wipe your personal data.

3.1 Difference Between Track My BB and Locate My BB

Upon clicking the Track My BB button on the dashboard, the map will display your current device location and auto-refresh the location every 5 mins. The map will display your location using markers

indicating the places you have been. Once tracking is turned on you will have to click the Stop Tracking button to turn tracking off

Upon clicking on the Locate My BB button on the dashboard, the map will give your Androids current location once, and will give you a single marker on the Dashboard Map of where your Android is currently located.

3.2 How SmrtGuard Determines Your Location

SmrtGuard uses your devices cell tower triangulation coordiantes and if available GPS coordinates to locate and track your phone. If your phone does not have network coverage or signal because the

phone is turned off or in a reception-poor area, SmrtGuard will not be able to determine your location.

For the best location accuracy we recommend enabling GPS on your Android device. If GPS is not enabled, SmrtGuard will use and display the cell tower triangulation coordinates returned by the phone.

3.3 Update Carrier Provider Before You Start Tracking

In order for SmrtGuard to interact with your Android device, it will require you to set your Network

Service Provider or Carrier that you are currently have. Also you will want to make sure you have the right mobile number listed. To do this, you will need to login into your SmrtGuard Account Go to the Account Tab Click on the Switch/Edit Device link Pick your carrier/verify mobile number. These steps are covered in Section 2.1, steps 6-11.

3.4 Using the Locating and Tracking Function

If your Android is on and in coverage, you should be able to see your Android right from the SmrtGuard Web Dashboard. The Dashboard uses markers to distinguish where your Android is currently and where

it has been. When the user logs into the Portal, the Dashboard will default display a location marker of

where the Android is currently. Please note, the Dashboard may take 15-30 seconds to refresh the updated location marker after the user has logged in or clicked on the Locate my BB button.

    Example:

  • 10 of 23

Figure 3-1 Android Tracking on SmrtGuard

Hot Location marker this indicates the updated location after you logged in.

Last location this indicates the last known location recorded from your device.

Old Location marker this indicates your previous locations. The number indicates how many locations ago this marker was recorded. So a number 1 is the devices first previous location relative to the last location marker and a number 2 is the second to last previous location and so forth.

GPS Location this indicates this is a GPS recorded location

3.5 Changing the Tracking History Preferences

From the Account tab on the SmrtGuard Web Portal, users may change how long ago they want the

Dashboard to show the location history from. By default, it is set to 24 hours, meaning the Dashboard will only show the locations stored in the past 24 hours. Users may edit their profile from the Account

    Tab to change this number.

  • 11 of 23

Figure 3-2 Updating Location History Preference

3.6 Self-Destruct and Audio Ping Functions

To help you locate a misplaced device you can send it an Audio Ping command to help you find it. This will make the device play an audio alert for ten minutes, or until you find it. The audio alert will be

activated even if your phone is on silent.

You can also trigger Audio Ping via an ad-hoc email, see section on Preference for more.

If the device is unrecoverable you can send it a Self-Destruct command to remotely wipe your personal data. Just click on the red Self-Destruct button, it will prompt for your password before sending the destruct signal.

The following types of data will be deleted from your device permanently:

Emails and PIN messages Contacts Memos Calendar Tasks Call Logs All data in the MicroSD Card On board system memory that holds media (pictures / ringtones / wall paper)

Furthermore, the email application will be uninstalled from the device not allowing the thief to view,

    send or receive messages.

The Self-Destruct Test command is used to check to make sure the Self-Destruct feature works without actually deleting your data.

3.7 A note about location accuracy

Our software is designed to help you determine whether you have only misplaced your device, or if it non-recoverable or stolen. Even with GPS many factors affect the accuracy of the available location

information, so we do not offer any guarantees for its accuracy.

    4. Loved-One Tracker

    Loved-One Tracker answers the questions:

Where is my daughter/son? Is my child in trouble? Is my child where he said he should be?

My spouse is suppose to be home for dinner 5 minutes ago, is she/he stuck on the commute route?

    4.1 You are in Control

This is a feature that lets you be in control and is by default turned off.

As the SmrtGuard owner, you have FULL CONTROL in giving permission or revoking permission to

whom can track you. The purpose of Loved-One Tracker is to give your loved one the piece of mind.

Your Loved-One Tracker will ONLY see your location (if available) and NOT your backed-up data. They

will see a screen similar to Figure 4-1, and nothing else.

Notice there is only one tab that the Loved-One Tracker can see.

Step 2 Click on the Account Tab. You will see a screen similar to Figure 4-4.

Step 3 Click on De-Activate Tracker link. This will deactivate the tracker. Since you know the username and password, you can try to login as the tracker, but it will not be allowed.

    4.4 Be a Tracker

Many users register their spouses Android or childs Android with SmrtGuard so they themselves can be a tracker.

  • 15 of 23

    5. Follow Me

You can also initiate tracking through the Follow Me feature in the SmrtGuard application on your Android. Why would you use this? Lets say you were exploring a new city and wanted to see where you have been during the day. Through Follow-Me, you can enable tracking through the convenience of your Android. When you are done tracking, just disable the Follow Me feature on your Android, and

then you can log onto the web portal dashboard to see where you have been.

    increase battery life.

    6. Backup your Data

SmrtGuard backup is very user friendly. You can setup a schedule to auto backup and/or manually backup when you want. And now with Smrt-Backup, SmrtGuard will efficiently backup when there is a change in the backed-

up data, so SmrtGuard will only backup when it needs to. Currently for Android devices, contacts, call logs, and SMS are allowed to be backed up.

6.1 How to Perform a Manual Backup

Step 1. After clicking on the SmrtGuard icon, click on the Backup banner button. Then you will see a screen similar to Figure 6-1.

You can setup Automatic Backup right from the Backup Screen.

Step 1. Choose a backup frequency (Never / Daily / Weekly / Monthly).

Never - SmrtGuard will NOT run automatic backups, but you can still backup manually

Daily Backup once a day at the specified time. We recommend you select a time when you will not be using your device heavily, for example, late at night.

Weekly Backup once a week, on the specified day, at the specified time. This is a popular choice for users who do not have an unlimited data plan, but still want to safeguard their data.

After selecting Weekly, you need to pick the day of the week you like auto backup to run. The list ranges from Monday to Sunday.

Monthly Backup once a month, on the specified day, at the specified time

After selecting Monthly, you need to pick the date in each month you like auto backup to run. This list ranges from 1 31

Figure 6-3: Showing Automatic Backup Frequency as Weekly and Monthly

    Step 2. Specify A Time:

As long as Frequency is not selected as Never, you need to specific the time of day auto backup would run. After two easy steps, you are set for auto back! Auto backup will backup the checked off items that you see on Figure 6-1.

When your Android is stolen, you want to be able to listen in onto what is happening in your

surrounding environment. The Remote Listen feature allows you to do this by allowing the user to listen in onto their Android device through another device. How it works is that SmrtGuard will send a

command to your Android device to dial the number that you specify in the SmrtGuard Web Portal

interface. There is no audible indication that the Android is making a phone call.
