    Fourth pillar of Islam.Allah enjoined it as an obligatory act of worshipduring the second year of Hijraht.The meaning of Fasting:

    It is refraining from eating, drinking, and similar things from dawn to sunset with the intention of fasting.

    Quran says that:

    Allah has prescribed Fasting to the MuslimUmmah as He prescribed it to previous nations.Allah, the Exalted, has enjoined fasting ontheMuslims for great wisdom.

    The fear of Allah, the Exalted, andpiety.

    Fasting trains the Muslim to assumeresponsibiliry, and endurance.Fasting teaches man tolerance, self-restraint, truthfulness, andbeneficence.

    Fasting also makes man share thesuffering of his Muslim brothers, andexpend in charity to the poor andneedy.

    Fasting in Ramadhan is a field of worship andobedience to Allah.

    In Ramadhan, the gates of Jannah are opened andthe gates of Hell are closed,

    The Satans are chained. There is the night of Decree, which is better than a

    thousand months spent in worship. The Night of Decree has a great excellence,

    whoever spends it occupying himself with acts of worship out of belief, Allah would forgive hisprevious sins.

    The Night of Decree falls in the lastten days of Ramadhan.

    Whoever observes the fast of Ramadhan out of belief and expectsto be rewarded for doing so, in the'Hereafter, his past sins wouldbe forgiven.

    He'who breaks one day of fastwithout valid reason, he would neverbe able to expiate for it even if heobserves fast the rest of his life.

    which precedes Ramadhan, as 3OdaYs.

    3. Fasting of Ramadhan is obligatory on

    every wise, healthy, adult, Muslimcapable of fasting'4. Once- the new moon of Ramadhan has

    been sighted in a certain country,observing fast becomes Obligatory onthe residents of that country.

    5. If all Muslims in the world beginfasting on the same day, this would bean excellent demonstration of unityand brotherhood among the Muslims.

    1. The first day of Ramadhan may be confirmedby sighting the new moon by one trustworthyMuslim male or female.

    2. He who does not observe fasting on account of old age, or tenninal illness, he should give ameal to a needy person for each day he misses.

    3. It is permissible for a sick person who would beharmed by fasting to break his fast and to

    observe fasting a number of days equal tothose he missed during Ramadhan.

    1. The i'tikaaf is staying in a masjid duringwhich one dedicates his time worshippingAllah, the Exalted,in a specific manner.

    2. It applies to men and women alike.3. It is not valid without observing fasting, and

    is recommended at all times.4. It is more so during the month of

    Ramadhan, and most recommended duringthe last ten days of it.

    Allah says in the Holy Qur'an:

    "O you who believe! Observing As Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was

    prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaq'un*.

    The prophet (P.B.U.H) said:

    "Saum (fasting) is a shield (or a screen or a shelter) from Hell-fire." (Agreed upon)*.

    Allah s messenger said:

    'When it is the first night of Ramadan, the doors of Jannah (Paradise) are opened and none

    of them is closed; and the doors of Jahannam (Hell) are closed and none of them is opened; the devils are chained; and a caller calls saying: 'O those who seek righteousness, get closer; O those who seek evil, be you at a loss; it is upon Allah to bar (Hell) fire,' and that will happen every night of Ramadan."

    Narrated Abu Huraira that Allah'sMessenger (peace be on him) said,

    "Allah said, All the deeds of Adam's sons (people) are for them, except Saum (fasts) which is for Me, and I will give the reward for it'.

    For every day of Ramadan, complete self-restraint fromfood and drink, as well as continence in other respect, isenjoyed from the moment of dawn when its white light canbe distinguished from darkness until the setting of thesun.

    Allah said:"And eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawnappears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night) then complete your fast till the night appears". (Al-Baqra S.II 2:187)

    That is complete the fast throughout the day until nightfalls by the setting of the sun.

    It is strongly recommended by Prophet Muhammad(peace be on him) to observe these practices especiallyduring Ramadan: To break the fast soon as the sun setsand to make Du'a upon breaking fast.

    And the Prophet (peace be on him) said: "When one of you

    breaks the fast, he should do so with dates, because it isholy If he couldn't get dates, then (break your fast with)water, because it purifies". (Tirmidhi).

    The Prophet (peace be on him) used to say at the time of Ifatar: "O Allah I kept the fast for You, and with Yoursustenance I am breaking (my fast). The thirst is gone, andthe veins replenished, and the reward is confirmed, if Allahwills." (Abu Dawud).

    The Prophet (peace be on him) said: "Hewho performs night prayer in Ramadan withfaith in Allah, in the great reward for it and inseeking such reward will have his past sinsforgiven." (Bukhari).
