INTRODUCTION

A Brief History

As legend tells, Sumatran prince Sang Nila Utama, who was on an expedition, saw

a magnificent lion on Singapore island and named it the ‘Lion City’ or Singapura.

Modern Singapore was later founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819, where the

British ruled the country till 1959, before joining Malaya in 1963.

Ever since declaring independence in 1965, Singapore has come a long way

from her humble beginnings of a sleepy, fishing village, to a modern and colourful

city visited by millions from around the world.

Multicultural Kaleidoscope

One of the most valued and unique things about Singapore is her multi-racial,

multicultural society. There are four main races – Chinese, Malay, Indian and

Eurasian, together with a large expatriate population from the world over.

Pop by Chinatown and snap pictures of gorgeous Chinese temples and sample

delicious Chinese fare; Little India to experience the sights and sounds of Indian

culture; or Kampong Glam for a glimpse of Malay traditions.

Where Old Meets New

A shutterbug’s dream, Singapore’s landscape fuses

tradition, colonial and futuristic influences all at once.

Sail down the historical Singapore River and see the

iconic Sir Stamford Raffles Statue, where you’ll also

find museums and modern skyscrapers coexisting

side by side. Singapore is also famed for her popular

shopping belts of Orchard Road and Marina Bay, as

well as picturesque attractions like the Singapore

Flyer, Esplanade and Sentosa. Join the shopping spree

during the Great Singapore Sale between May and

July yearly, or spend a most memorable day at the

entertainment paradise of Resorts World Sentosa!

TEENAGERS

Blessed with sunny, tropical weather all-year round, there’s no better place to let

loose and thoroughly enjoy all of nature’s best offerings than East Coast Park.

Stretching across 185 hectares of land and a scenic 15 km coastline, Singapore’s

largest park is a hot favourite especially during weekends, perfect for leisurely

beach strolls or an exciting myriad of sporting, dining and recreational fun. A large

canopy of trees provide comfortable shade for picnics, while barbeque pits, bowling

alleys, volleyball courts and chalets are perfect for family gatherings.

Never thought you’d see snow in

Singapore? Now you can, at Snow City

– Singapore’s first permanent indoor

snow centre! Bundle up and create

an entire family of snowmen, enjoy

friendly snowball fights, or learn how to

ski and snowboard on the three-storey

snow slope, with professional coaching

and lessons available as well.

Shopping is considered a national

pastime in Singapore, where the

famous shopping belt of Orchard Road

boasts as one of the city’s most visited

attractions, the area fringed by over

20 glitzy shopping malls. Looking for a

different kind of shopping experience?

Head on down to Bugis Street –

Singapore’s largest street shopping spot!

The flea market houses over 600

shops, with a diverse blend of retail choices ranging from fashion apparels, funky

accessories, footwear, to beauty services such as manicure parlours and hair salons.

The second floor is fully air-conditioned for your shopping comfort, with little coffee

houses perfect for rest breaks and people watching.

Singapore is more than just a cosmopolitan city with its modern, high-rise buildings and state-of-the-art business infrastructure. This tiny dot on the world map is bursting at the seams with a whole host of appealing leisure options, where teens will love the incredible range of shopping outlets, unique play areas, or just spending a relaxing day at one of Singapore’s many beautiful parks.

FAMILY

THEME

EDUCATIONALWhile hopping around the myriad of attractions in colourful Singapore, you’d be glad to know there are also plenty of opportunities to learn a thing or two while having fun! Whether you are getting up close and personal with exotic wildlife, trekking through gorgeous nature reserves or immersed in one of the interactive science or artistic exhibits – there’s always something new to learn every day.

Begin nature’s lesson with a hearty

Jungle Breakfast at the Singapore

Zoo! Held at the Ah Meng Restaurant

(Terrace) with the forest clearing in

full view, tuck into your food as you

marvel at up-close encounters of playful

tamarins, colourful macaws and cute

orang utans in their natural habitats.

Then, carry on the outdoor fun with

Falcony Lessons at the Jurong Bird

Park! Traditionally a sport practiced

only by royalty and aristocrats, now

the entire family can strap on the

falconer’s vest and learn the ropes to

handling birds of prey! Feed, fly and get

up close with various raptors, ending

with a photo session and receive the

exclusive ‘Be a Falconer Certificate’.

Also, don’t miss a trip to the Sungei

Buloh Wetland Reserve. Designated

a nature park in 1989, the 164-hectare

site is home to over 160 species of

birds such as herons, kingfishers and

sunbirds, fascinating wildlife, muddy

mangroves, and over 500 species of

tropical flora – making this an exciting

nature classroom for one and all.

ACTION-PACKEDSingapore takes having fun seriously – which means there’s never a dull moment in this city chockfull of attractions offering a memorable time of thrills and spills!

For a learning journey in air-conditioned comfort, head over to the Singapore

Science Centre! Covering a wide range of topics related to science, technology and

mathematics, become Einstein for a day while going through over 1000 exhibits

showcased across 14 galleries. Permanent exhibitions include a Kinetic Garden,

Marine Alcove, Our Solar System and an Ecogarden. Temporary exhibitions are

available too, with past exhibits including CSI: The Experience and Planet Shark.

Boys and men alike will also love the Singapore Discovery Centre, an 88-hectare

‘edutainment’ centre located on the grounds of the SAFTI Military Institute – the training

area for local army, navy and air-force officers. Head to the Shooting Gallery, complete

with a four-lane computerised simulated shooting range; or go wild in an actual shoot-

out during a game of crossfire paintball. For a bigger adrenaline kick, head to the XD

Theatre, where electronically controlled seats will provide a thrilling 4D simulation ride

at up to 100 movements per second! Ever

toyed with the idea of being a journalist?

Now you can at ‘On-Location Reporter’, set

in a studio environment and complete with

teleprompters. Or join the Singapore Armed

Forces Command Headquarters for a day

at ‘Battlefield Command’, where you can

choose to be a Leopard Tank Commander,

Frigate Commander or an Apache Fighter

and battle enemy forces!

Come evening, head over to the picturesque Marina Bay Sands area, also home

to the ArtScience Musuem. Boasting over 50,000 square feet of space across 21

galleries, this is the world’s first museum of its kind, hosting international travelling

exhibitions from renowned collections worldwide, spanning influences across art and

science, media and technology to design and architecture. A total of ’10-fingers’ make

up the lotus-inspired architectural beauty, designed as a symbolic gesture to welcome

guests from the world over.

As part of Singapore’s Green Mark program, the museum’s roof also acts as

a funnel during rainfall, channelling water down a 35-meter drop down to the

40,000-square foot lily pond reflecting pool – creating a breathtaking sight of a

continuous cylindrical waterfall.

Water babies alert! Get splashing at

Singapore’s largest water theme park –

Wild Wild Wet! Featuring nine different

rides from the family-friendly to the

thrilling, try raft-sliding at Ular-lah; let the

kids indulge at the shallow sloshing area

of Yippee!; slide at high-speeds down the

crazy curves of The Waterworks; or simply

meander through the 335 metre Shiok

River atop a float for a relaxing ride!

FURAMA CITY CENTRE

CHINATOWNChinatown was a place where Chinese

immigrants called home, while the

nearby Singapore River became a

place to find work. Each household

had to collect fresh water in bullock-drawn carts, hence

giving Chinatown its local name – Niu Che Shui (Bullock Cart

Water). One of Singapore’s three ethnic hotspots, you’ll find

a ‘wet market’ selling fresh produce at Chinatown Complex,

with the second floor housing some of Singapore’s best

eating stalls. Between Pagoda Street and Smith Street lies

a region exclusively revamped for tourists. The Al-Abrar

Mosque along Telok Ayer Street, Buddha Tooth Relic Temple

and Sri Mariamman Temple along South Bridge Road

depicts the racially and religiously harmonious atmosphere

that is unique to Singapore.

Sri Mariammam Temple

Step into Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple, easily recognised by its impressive

gate tower, covered with intricate sculptures of gods, goddesses and mythological

beasts. Other than offering prayers to Goddess Mariamman, known for her

power in curing epidemic diseases, devotees also gather between October and

November yearly for the spectacular Theemithi (fire-walking) ceremony.

Located along the same road as Sri

mosque was built in 1826 by the Chulias –

Tamil Muslims from the Coromandel Coast

of Southern India, and gazetted as a national

monument in 1974.

Chinatown Food Street

Coming alive at night, the stalls located

along Smith Street lets visitors tuck into

delicious Chinese fare including fishball

noodles, barbequed seafood and Char Kway

while soaking in the charming atmosphere

of dining amidst the backdrop of colourful,

Little IndiaOne of Singapore’s key cultural precincts, Little India offers a

smorgasbord of various sights, smells and tastes that will evoke

memories of life as it is in Mumbai and Delhi. More than the

resident smells of curry, jasmine flower garlands and incense,

this street truly comes alive at night – where thousands throng the streets, be it to

shop, eat, worship or people-watch at one of the many coffee-shops and eateries.

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple

Built by Tamil labourers back in 1855 as a place for prayer, worship and gatherings,

the temple is dedicated to Hindu Goddess Kali – the Goddess of Power, and whose

name means ‘Courageous Mother Kali’. Situated along Serangoon Road, rebuilding

of this historic monument began in 1983 at a cost of 2.2 million, its imposing Gate-

Tower – mounted with colourful and intricate statues of various Hindu deities – now

one of the most distinctive features found in Little India.

Tekka Centre

Located at the corner of Serangoon and Rochor Road, Tekka Centre is a wet market,

food centre and shopping mall rolled into one, where you’ll find people from various

ethnic communities shopping, or tucking into delicisous South and North Indian

fare, Chinese and Malay food on the bottom floor. Continue shopping at the nearby

Buffalo and Kerbau Roads, where you’ll find row after row of goldsmith shops – as the

Indian community believes that gold embodies Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth.

Mustafa Centre

A cult favourite with both locals and tourists, this 24-hour gigantic department store

teems with household knick-knacks, clothing, accessories, makeup and perfumes,

Considered the last “village” in

Singapore, Pulau Ubin (literally

Granite Island) is found off the

North-eastern corner of the

Singapore mainland. Accessible

only by boat from Changi Jetty,

the easiest way to explore

the island is on bicycle, which

can be rented from the main

village. Take a ride to the Chek

Jawa Wetlands – home to

several types of ecosystems

and an abundance of plant and

animal life. Take a walk along

the kilometre-long boardwalk

that runs along the Mangrove

and Coastal Loops, or climb up

the Jejawi Tower to enjoy an

unfettered view of the wetlands.

Pulau Ubin

The Southern Ridges consists of eight trails along the South of Singapore, offering

visitors the opportunity to explore some of Singapore’s finest greenery. Trail

highlights include the Henderson Waves (Singapore’s highest pedestrian bridge),

Alexandra Arch, the Canopy Walk at Kent Ridge Park, and Reflections at Bukit

Chandu, a museum that commemorates one of Singapore’s fiercest battles during

World War II. Do pop by Hort Park along the way, a one-stop gardening hub with

themed gardens, a Green Roof, and even a Butterfly Park.

FOOD

Food, glorious food! Singapore is a gourmet paradise where you can find everything from world-class international cuisine to the simplest of hawker fares, so get ready to start feasting.

Hainanese Chicken RiceTender, juicy slivers of chicken,

drizzled with a soy-based sauce

and served on a bed of fragrant

rice that is cooked with pandan

leaves and chicken broth. This is

Hainanese Chicken Rice, a classic

Singaporean dish. Adapted from

“Wenchang Chicken”, a well-

known dish from Hainan, China,

dip your chicken into the fiery

chilli sauce for a kick of spice –

there’s also pounded ginger for

those who can’t take spice.

Popular: Boon Tong Kee (399 /401 /403 Balestier Road), Chatterbox Restaurant (Mandarin Hotel), Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice (Maxwell Food Centre)

Many people consider Chilli Crabs as

Singapore’s national dish – you can’t say

you’ve visited the country if you’ve never tried

this yummy delicacy. The crabs – most often

mud crabs – are fried at a high heat, and

then drowned in a chilli and tomato sauce

with ribbons of beaten egg in it. Once you’re

done with the crab, mop up the sauce with

accompanying deep-fried mantou (Chinese

buns) – this is the ultimate Singaporean Chilli

Crab experience. Other equally delicious

variations include Pepper Crabs and Salted

Egg Yolk Crabs.

Chilli Crab

Popular: East Coast Seafood Centre (1206 East Coast Parkway), Mellben Seafood (Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3), No Signboard Seafood Restaurant (No.414 Geylang)

Nasi LemakTraditionally served during breakfast, Nasi

Lemak has come to be recognised as a

suitable meal at any time of the day. The

wonderfully fragrant rice, which is steamed

with coconut milk, is delicious even on its

own. It is nonetheless served with a variety of

accompaniments, at your selection at many

stalls, and a spicy sauce on the side.

Popular: Adam's Nasi Lemak (Adam Food Centre), Chong Pang Nasi Lemak (447 Sembawang Road), Punggol Nasi Lemak Centre (965 Upper Serangoon Road)

Satay

Roti Prata

Bak Kut Teh

Skewers of meat, marinated

in a host of spices and grilled

over a charcoal fire – this is

Satay, one of Singapore’s most

iconic dishes. Satay is usually

made with chicken, mutton,

and beef, and served with a

spicy peanut sauce, and slices

of red onion and cucumber.

Evolving from the original

pancake recipes from Pakistan

and India, Roti Prata means

‘flat bread’ – a lightly flavoured,

subtly sweet dough pancake,

commonly served with dhal or

curry. Other than the plain prata,

there is also the equally delicious

egg and cheese pratas, and even

savoury variations such as durian,

chocolate and banana – perfect

for the adventurous diner!

Bak Kut Teh is a Chinese dish that consists of

meaty pork ribs served in a complex broth of

herbs and spices simmered for hours. There are

two main variants of Bak Kut Teh in Singapore;

one with a sweeter peppery soup, and another

with a more herbal taste. Whichever you

choose, it can be eaten with rice, noodles, and

fried dough fritters.

Popular: Chomp Chomp Food Centre (20 Kensington Park Road), Haron Satay (East Coast Lagoon Food Village), Lau Pa Sat (18 Raffles Quay)

Popular: Song Fa (North Bridge Road), Ya Hua Rou Gu Cha (7 Keppel Road), Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh (The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands)

LaksaA dish birthed from the fusion of Chinese and

Malay cultures, Laksa is a dish of rich, savoury

coconut-based curry soup, usually served

with thick rice vermicelli, a spoonful of spicy

sambal chilli, and a sprinkling of Vietnamese

coriander, or what the locals call “laksa leaves”.

The noodles are served with fishcake, prawns,

beancurd puffs, beansprouts, and cockles.

Popular: Famous 49 Katong Laksa (49 East Coast Road), Roxy Laksa (1220 East Coast Parkway Lagoon Food Village), Prima Taste Kitchen (The Centrepoint)

NIGHTLIFE / ENTERTAINMENT

Laugh and cry along with performers at entertaining live performances, shopperholics indulge in 24-hour sprees, or chill out at Singapore and Sentosa's myriad of vibrant nightlife spots!

Chinese Theatre CircleImmerse in the exciting world

of Chinese Opera and learn

all about this traditional art.

Start off the evening with a

Chinese dinner in an oriental

ambience. After dinner,

showtime starts at 8pm with

a talk (conducted in English)

and demonstration on Chinese

Opera, followed by a colourful

performance of an opera

excerpt, accompanied by

English subtitles. Artists will

pose for photographs with the

guest at no extra charge.

Clarke Quay / Boat QuayAs night falls, Singapore takes on another persona to offer a vibrant array

of nightlife and entertainment choices. There are nightclubs for the party

hedonists to revel the night away; bars and lounges for the thirsty hippos and

chill cats; and live entertainment venues for the livewire revellers.

St James Power StationHoused in what used to be Singapore’s first

coal-fired power plant, St James Power Station

is now a dining and entertainment complex

and home to some of Singapore’s best clubs

and restaurants. Fans of ‘live’ music will love

The Boiler Room and Dragonfly with live

stadium-standard shows, or jive to the jazz

tunes of the Bellini Room. For something a

little quieter, there is the Peppermint Park with

its own version of the “great outdoors”.
