The Magic Remote Control Look at the pictures and answer the questions.

What is the name of the boy?

Where is he from? What is his pet’s name?

You operate different machines with a remote control For example televisions, radios, toys, etc. Another name for a remote Control is “clicker” Do you have a clicker?

Page 16: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

The Magic Remote Control

Thomas A. Tomkins is in third grade. His friends call him Tommy. Tommy has a dog. His name is Taffy. Taffy finds things and brings them to Tommy. Taffy finds a hat. Taffy finds a box. Taffy finds a ball.

Today, Tommy is playing with his friend Lucy. Taffy runs to them. He has a TV remote control. It is not an ordinary remote control. It is purple with red stripes. Tommy says “What’s that? Is that a clicker?. Taffy wags his tail. Tommy takes the clicker and plays with the buttons.

Suddenly, the clicker makes a loud noise. There is a flash of blue light and smoke. When the smoke disappears, Lucy and Taffy are not with Tommy!

Page 17: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

Tommy is very surprised. He stays immobile for a moment with his mouth open. “He opens and closes his eyes and shouts, “Where are you, Lucy?” “Come here, Taffy!” He looks for them behind the bushes. He looks for them under the bench. He looks for them on top of the wall. He can’t find them anywhere.

“I think the clicker is the responsible” he says to himself. Now, He tries pressing the buttons on the clicker to get his friends back. Nothing happens. “Perhaps the batteries are dead,” he thinks.

“But there is no place for batteries. Hestudies the numbers and words on the buttons of the clicker. One says “forward.” He presses it. Nothing happens. Another says “back.” He presses it. Nothing happens.“Perhaps I have to point the clicker at myself and press,” he thinks.

Everything gets black. Tommy falls to the ground. “He opens his eyes and he sees Lucy smiling at him. He hears Taffy barking at him. “Where am I?” asks Tommy.

Page 18: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

“We’re in the school” answers Lucy. “But I don’t know why” she says. Tommy tells her that the magic clicker is responsible for that. “We don’t have to be here on a Saturday,” says Tommy. “We’ll be in big trouble if someone finds us.” “They look for a way to get out. They try the doors. They are locked. They try the windows. They are locked, too. “What can we do?” cries Lucy. “We can’t stay here until Monday.”

“We will not be hungry,” says Tommy.“We’re in the lunch room. There is a lot of food here.” “Taffy starts barking loudly. He finds a little door in the corner of the room. “It’s not locked,” says Tommy. He opens the door.

“They look in, but it is dark. “Can we try crawling in there?” asks Lucy. “ Tommy picks up Taffy. “Let’s go,” he says. “It’s the only way to get out of here.”

Tommy and Taffy go through the door. They squeeze in. Lucy follows behind. Suddenly, they slide down. It is like going down the playground slide, but very fast.

Page 19: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

Finally, they reach the bottom. They land in something soft and spongy. It is also stinky and smelly. “ They look around. They are in a big garbage bin. They are sitting in piles of smelly old food. “Yuck, this is horrible. Let’s get out of here,” shouts Lucy.

They jump out of the garbage bin and run out of the school gates. After five minutes, they stop. “What are you going to do with the magic clicker? I think it is a big problem” says Lucy. “I don’t know,” says Tommy. “They decide to ask their best friends. They can tell them about the clicker the next day, at the park.

“They say “Good-bye” and go home. “What will I tell Mom about my stinky clothes?” he thinks. “As he runs, he hides the magic clicker in his pocket.

The Animal Shelter

It’s breakfast time, Tommy tells his father, “I’m going to the park with my friends today.” “Take Samantha with you,” says his mother. “Oh, no!” moans Tommy, “Do I have to?” “Tommy likes Sam, his sister. But he doesn’t like her playing with his friends. She is in first grade. He is in third grade.

“After breakfast, Tommy, Sam, and Taffy go to the park. It is a very nice day. Tommy is wearing his blue shorts, a red and white T-shirt and tennis shoes. Sam has a nice yellow dress and brown shoes. They are very happy. The park is at the end of their street. Lucy, Andy, and Kim are waiting for them. They say, “Do you have he clicker ?” “Do I have what?” says Tommy. He pretends not to understand. “Come on,” says Lucy. “Show them the clicker. They know about it!

Tommy smiles and takes the clicker from his coat pocket. They look at it. “Make it do something,” says Sam. “No, no!” says Tommy. “I don’t know how it works. I don’t want to go to the school lunchroom again.” “I want to see it,” shouts Andy. “Give it to me.” “He tried to grab it from Tommy’s hand. “Tommy wouldn’t let go. They pulled and they pushed.

Page 27: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

“Let go!” says Tommy. “Suddenly, the clicker makes a loud noise. There is a flash of blue light and thick smoke. When the smoke disappears, nobody is at the park. “Tommy, Andy, Lucy, Kim, Sam, and Taffy disappear.

Now they feel scared. They bump

into each other as they fly in the air. They can see yellow, red, pink stars. Finally, they fall to the ground. Kim cries and is scared. “Sam says “Wow, that’s cool!” “I’m sorry, I only wanted to see the clicker,” says Andy. “Now I see it is magic!”

“We are in trouble again,” says Lucy. Kim stops crying and whispers, “Look where we are. We’re not in the school. We’re in a cage.” “We are in the zoo,” says Andy, “but we’re inside the cage!” “Tommy looks around. He sees that there are dogs sleeping in all the other cages.

Page 28: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

“We’re not in the zoo,” whispersTommy. “We’re in the animal shelter. This is where they bring all the dogs that get lost or run away. We came here when we adopted Taffy.”

“Oh no!” cries Kim, “Does that mean someone will adopt us?”

They feel very frightened, except

Taffy, he seems happy. Tommy wants to open the door of the cage, but it is locked. “Sam shouts, “Help, help, we’re locked in a cage!” As she shouts she wakes the dogs. All the dogs start barking. There is a terrible noise, and even Taffy starts barking. “Stop barking, you’re driving me CRAZY!” yells Andy.

“Suddenly the clicker jumps out of Tommy’s hand. It lands on the floor and starts moving. “When the clicker stops moving, two little legs get out from the bottom. Two little arms get out from the sides. The boys see a little head out of the top. “Hello, I am RK-5. How can I help you?” says the clicker.

Page 29: short stories - UMSA

The five kids are very surprised and they are with their mouths open. At last, Tommy says, “You can speak!” “Of course I can speak,” says RK-5. “I can speak any language. I can talk to animals. I can understand anything that anyone says.”

“Okay,” says Andy, “say something to Taffy.” “RK-5 barks, “Woof, woofwoof, woof-woof-woof.” “Taffy replies, “Woofwoof-woof woof-woof.” “What does he say? What does Taffy say?” Sam asks. “Taffy says that he did not have breakfast. Tommy forgot to feed him. Tommy was in a hurry this morning.”

All the kids ask questions to RK-5. “Where are you from?” “What can you do?” “Why are you here?” “One question at a time, please,” says RK-5. RK-5 is sitting on Tommy’s lap. And he tells his story.

“I don’t know magic words,” says

Andy. “My Grand-dad always says ‘DOO-LALLY.’ Instead of driving me crazy. I didn’t know that it’s a magic word.” “If you are so smart, RK-5, can you get us out of this cage?” Tommy says to the little robot. “Of course my friend!” says RK-5.

Bongo Gets Adopted

Tommy and his friends were locked in a cage in the animal shelter. “Tommy asked his little robot, RK-5, if he could help get them out.“I will try,” said RK-5. “I will ask the dogs if they can help.”

“ The dogs became quiet when RK-5 barked a question to them. A little spotted dog barked back at RK-5. Then a large black dog joined in. Soon a lot of the other dogs barked in turn. “What are they saying?” asked Lucy.

“They said that if they knew how to get out, they could not be in the cages. The little poodle said the big doors will open in ten minutes. Then people will come in to look at the dogs. The lucky dogs will be adopted and will go to good homes.”

“We’ll have to get out before t he big doors open,” said Sam. “I don’t want to be adopted. I have a nice family and a good home.” “ At that moment there was a loud sound. The kids covered their ears with their hands. “Look, look!” said Kim. “It’s a baby monkey. In that red box in the next cage.”

“RK-5, can you speak monkey language?” asked Andy. “Of course I can,” replied RK-5. “I can speak any language. I can speak to any animal.” “Please ask the monkey if he can get us out of this cage,” said Kim.

RK-5 talked for some time to the little monkey. When he finished talking, the monkey jumped out of the red box. He put his tail between the bars of his cage. The long tail reached to the handle on the outside of the kids’ cage. And he opened the door.

The kids were very happy to be free they danced and shouted. All the noise made the dogs start barking again. Tommy opened the door. “Let’s go, before someone comes,” said Tommy. The kids ran to the door.

The monkey started to shout. He jumped up and down. “What’s wrong with him?” said Andy. “He wants to come with us,” said RK-5. “He wants you to adopt him. He will be sent back to his country today. He doesn’t want to go back.”

“He helped us get out,” said Lucy. “Let’s adopt him. He can live in the park.” They said yes. Andy opened his cage. The monkey jumped onto his shoulder. Tommy, Lucy, Andy, Kim, Sam, Taffy, and the monkey ran out of the door. Then they went to the park gates.

At last, they reached the blue bench. They always met at the big, blue bench. It was their favorite place in the park. Then Tommy said, “We have a lot of questions for you, RK-5.” Sam said, “We have a lot of questions for the monkey, too.”

“Start with the monkey,” said RK-5. “What do you want to ask him?” “I want to know his name,” said Andy. “I want to know how he got here,” said Tommy. “RK-5 spoke to the little monkey in monkey language. The kids were very quiet.

“ When the monkey stopped talking, RK-5 told the children what the monkey said. “The monkey’s name is Bongo. He lived at the seaside in his country. One day, he saw a big box of bananas near the sea shore. He was very hungry so he jumped into the box to get a banana. He heard someone and He hid under the bananas.

“Someone closed the box. Then he felt the box moving. Someone put the box on a ship and the ship sailed here. “It took a very long time to get here, so when the sailors opened the box, there was only one banana. Bongo ate all of the others. The sailors were very angry and took Bongo to the animal shelter.”

“Don’t worry, Bongo. You are safe with us,” said Andy. “We will take care of you. You can make a house in these tall trees in the park. We’ll bring you food every day and we will remember this day, March 27 for ever” They watched Bongo climb the highest tree.

Name two months that have 31 days:

________________ ________________ Here is another way to remember how many days are in each month: Imagine the first knuckle as January, the first “valley” as February, and so on. Using this pattern, all of the months that “sit” on a knuckle have 31 days. February has 28 days (except in a leap year) and all of the months in the valleys have 30 days. A visit to the Zoo Andy went to the park early. He had two bananas, a pear, and a bag of peanuts. The food was for Bongo, the monkey he helped rescue from the animal shelter. Bongo was living in a tall tree in the park. When he saw Andy with the food, he climbed down very fast. He ate the bananas, then he ate the pear. Andy kept the peanuts for later.

“A voice shouted from behind him. “Hey! Andy.” It was Tommy with his sister, Sam. Lucy and Kim followed close behind. “Is RK-5 with you?” asked Andy. “Of course I am,” said a voice from Tommy’s pocket. Tommy took the little robot from his pocket.

“Can you take us somewhere fun, for a change?” said Sam. “I can take you anywhere you want to go,” replied RK-5. “I want to go to the beach,” said Sam. “No, let’s go to a toy store,” said Kim. “I want to go to a farm,” said Andy.

Page 54: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

Everyone was talking at the same time, including Bongo. Tommy asked RK-5 what Bongo was saying. “He wants to find some monkey friends at the zoo,” said RK-5. “Yes, yes! Let’s go to the zoo,” said Sam. They all agreed it would be fun to go to The zoo. They would find some friends for Bongo.

Andy put Bongo in his backpack. They didn’t want anyone at the zoo to see Bongo. They thought the zookeeper wanted to keep him at the zoo. RK-5 asked Tommy to press 26-15-15 x 6 on the buttons of his chest. Tommy pressed the buttons.

There was a flash of blue light and thick smoke. When the smoke cleared, they were on a hill. There were pink flamingos all around them. “Look! There’s a path there,” said Kim. “There’s a sign, which shows where all the animals are,” said Tommy. They ran to the sign to find out where the monkeys lived.

Page 55: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

“Lucy pointed to a picture of the Monkey House on the sign. Kim said, “Here’s Flamingo Hill. That’s where we are now.” “If we walk to the end of this path and turn left, we’ll be at the Monkey House,” said Tommy.

They all ran to visit the monkeys. They didn’t see Sam stop to look at the crocodiles. Sam counted three big crocodiles. They all had lots of big, scary teeth. Suddenly, the wind blew Sam’s hat. It went into the crocodile pen. “Oh, no!” she said out loud. “I’m not going in there to get my hat. I’ll find the zookeeper. He’ll get my hat for me.”

Tommy and the others found the Monkey House. Andy let Bongo out of the backpack. Bongo had a fine time chatting with his new monkey friends. Everybody laughed at the funny faces the monkeys made. “Where’s Sam?” asked Kim. They all Looked around. “Oh no! She’s lost,” said Tommy. “Now I’m in super big trouble.”

They went back towards Flamingo Hill. They passed the crocodile pen. Andy shouted, “Look! There’s Sam’s hat. It’s in the crocodile pen. A crocodile ate Sam.” Kim started to cry. The others looked very scared.

“Hey! Look at me,” said a voice behind them. It was Sam. She was with the zookeeper. He had a long pole with a hook on the end. He used the pole to get Sam’s hat from the crocodile pen. They said “thank you” to the zookeeper. The zookeeper said, “It’s time to feed the sea lions. Would you like to help?”

“Yes, please!” they shouted. They had great fun throwing little fish to the sea lions. They also gave food to the baby sea lions.

“I’m hungry,” said Sam. “It must be time for lunch.” “It is 11:30 a.m.,” said RK-5. “In 30 minutes it will be time for your lunch.” “We’d better go,” said Tommy. “Now that we have RK-5, we can come back to the zoo anytime.”

“ They ran to Flamingo Hill. “How do we get back?” asked Tommy. “This time, press 16-1-18-11 x 6 on my buttons,” said RK-5. Tommy pressed the buttons. Within seconds, RK-5 took them back to the park.

Tommy in the Jungle It was a beautiful Sunday morning, Tommy and his sister, Sam, were walking to the park. They were going to meet their friends. Sam saw that Tommy was holding a banana. “Are you going to eat that banana?” asked Sam. “If not, can I have it?” “Sorry, you can’t have it,” replied Tommy. “It’s for Bongo.”

“They reached the big blue bench in the park. All their friends were there. Their friends didn’t seem very happy. “What’s the matter with everyone?” asked Tommy.

“It’s Bongo,” said Andy. “He won’t come down from the big tree. He usually rushes down as soon as he sees us.” “Don’t worry,” said Tommy. “I brought a banana for him.

I’m sure he will come when he sees it.” “Tommy called out, “Bongo! Bongo! Banana for Bongo!” “They saw a movement in the branches. Then Bongo’s head peeked out. But Bongo still did not come down from the tree.

Page 72: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

“I think he is sick,” said Tommy. “He never refused a banana before.” “I want to know what is wrong with him,” said Andy. “I’m worried about him.” “RK-5 can speak Bongo’s language,” said Lucy. “He can ask Bongo why he doesn’t want to come down.” “Tommy pulled RK-5 from his pocket. RK-5 immediately said, “Yes, I can speak to Bongo. I can ask him if he’s sick.”

“RK-5 made a terrible noise. The children covered their ears with their fingers. RK-5 was very loud. He wanted Bongo to hear him, who was at the top of the tree. “Bongo answered in the same kind of loud chattering tone. Bongo finished speaking. “RK-5 was silent for a moment, and then he translated. “Bongo is homesick. He likes it here, but he misses the jungle.” “Let’s have RK-5 take us to a rainforest,” suggested Lucy. “I’m studying rainforests at school.” “Can you do that?” Tommy asked RK-5.

Page 73: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

“Of course I can take you to a rainforest,” said RK-5. “I can take you anywhere.” “RK-5 called up to Bongo and told him They were going to the jungle. Within seconds, Bongo jumped on Andy’s head. “Tommy pressed some numbers on RK-5 chest. There was a flash of light and a cloud of blue smoke. When the smoke cleared, the children, Bongo, and Taffy disappeared. “When Tommy opened his eyes, he was sitting on a carpet of humid leaves. His friends were looking up at the tall trees that surrounded them.

Bongo was so excited. Soon he was swinging from tree to tree.

“Where exactly are we?” Lucy asked RK-5.

“We are in Asia—in a country called Malaysia,” answered RK-5.

“Look at Bongo,” said Andy. “He’s waving to us. He’s so happy.”

The children waved back to Bongo. Suddenly, there was a flash of orange next to Bongo. A big, hairy animal grabbed Bongo. It swung through the trees with Bongo under its arm. Then they both disappeared behind the canopy of leaves.

Page 74: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

“Oh, no! What was that?” cried Kim. “It was an orangutan,” answered Lucy. “They are great apes. They are usually gentle. I don’t know why that one took Bongo.” “We’ve got to get help,” said Andy. “We can’t leave Bongo here.” “While they were talking, Tommy climbed halfway up a tree. He was trying to see where the orangutan went. The children watched Tommy climb higher and higher.

“When he reached the top, Sam called out, “Can you see them?” “No,” replied Tommy. “But I can see some huts over there.” “Tommy climbed back down. The children decided to go to the huts for help. “Before they left, Lucy tied a ribbon around the tree that Tommy had climbed. Then they walked off in the direction of the huts.

Page 75: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

“When they reached the huts, a man came out to meet them. “Hello, I’m Mr. Azzam. I’m in charge of the Orangutan Center. How can I help you?” “Tommy explained to Mr. Azzam what had happened to Bongo. “Mr. Azzam listened carefully and then said, “I think I know why that orangutan took your monkey. Come with me. I want to show you something.” “The children followed Mr. Azzam into one of the huts. “Yesterday, I found this baby orangutan in the jungle. He was alone. He had lost his mother. I suspect the mother took Bongo because she lost her baby.” “What can we do to get Bongo back?” asked Andy. “We could take the baby to the place where Bongo was kidnapped. Maybe the mother will see the baby and exchange Bongo for him. Do you remember where you were?” asked Mr. Azzam. “We can find it. I tied my ribbon to a tree there,” answered Lucy. “Clever girl,” said Mr. Azzam.

“They took the baby orangutan to the tree that Lucy had tied with her ribbon. Mr. Azzam released the baby, and they waited. “Mr. Azzam told the kids that orangutans are endangered. Their numbers are decreasing quickly as they lose their homes to people. “An hour passed, and they were still waiting. “This isn’t working,” said Tommy. “I’m going to try something else.”

Page 76: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

Tommy put the baby orangutan on his shoulders and began to climb the tree. The baby clung to his neck as Tommy climbed higher and higher. When they were near the top of the tree, the baby began to cry. Tommy suddenly saw the mother orangutan swinging from tree to tree. Bongo was under her arm. Tommy held the baby in his outstretched arms. The next thing he knew, the baby was gone and he had Bongo in his arms. There was a big cheer from everyone below.

“Bongo quickly swung down from the tall tree. He jumped straight into Andy’s arms. Bongo then began to chatter loudly. “Tommy reached the ground, and everyone gave him another cheer. “Hey, RK-5, what’s Bongo saying?” asked Andy. “RK-5 listened to Bongo’s chattering for a few seconds. “He says he wants to go back to the park. It’s too dangerous here.” “Everyone laughed. Then they all said goodbye to Mr. Azzam.

“Okay, RK-5, let’s go home,” said Tommy. “Bongo wants some peace and quiet.” “Within seconds, they were back at the park. Bongo was so happy to be back in the big tree. “What do you have there, Lucy?” asked Sam. “It’s a little book that Mr. Azzam gave me. This part tells how baby orangutans are caught and sold around the world as pets. I am glad that we were able to reunite the baby with its mother,” replied Lucy.

Tommy Saves the Fourth of July Tommy and his friends were playing in the park. They were very excited because it was the third of July. The next day would be Independence Day. There was going to be a big picnic in the park. After sunset, there was going to be a big fireworks show. “I can’t wait until tomorrow,” said Sam. “I love fireworks.” “Tomorrow will be the best fireworks display the town has ever had,” said Andy. “The newspaper said there would be lots of special cool rockets.” “Tommy was just about to speak when they heard a loud bang. The children quickly put their hands over their ears. “What was that?” asked Tommy. “Before anyone could answer, the sky filled with light. There were explosions, and colored stars filled the sky. “What’s happening?” asked Kim. “Are They starting the fireworks show too early?” “No, it looks as if everything is Happening at the same time,” said Lucy. “Something is wrong.” “Look, it’s Bobby and Billy! They must have something to do with this,” said Kim.

===============================================================

“Hey, Bobby! What did you two do?” Tommy called out to the two troublemakers. Bobby and Billy looked scared. “We just wanted to get our ball back,” said Bobby. “We didn’t mean to hit the switch that set off all the fireworks.” “Did anyone get hurt?” asked Kim. “Of course not!” said Billy. “Now there are no fireworks for tomorrow!” Andy said sadly.

“We must do something,” said Tommy. “We must have fireworks for the Fourth of July.” “What can we do?” asked Lucy. “No one is allowed to have fireworks unless they are putting on an organized show. Fireworks are too dangerous.” “Yes, Bobby and Billy have proved that,” said Kim. “Let’s ask RK-5. He may know what to do,” said Lucy. “Tommy gently pulled his little robot friend from his pocket. “I know about fireworks,” said RK-5. “They were invented in China. The country of China still makes some of the best fireworks.”

Page 85: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

“Can you take us to a place in China Where they make fireworks?” asked Sam. “Of course I can,” replied RK-5. “I can take you anywhere you want to go.” “ They could hear the sirens of a firetruck as Tommy punched the code into RK-5’s number pad. “As soon as Tommy entered the final number, there was a flash of light and a cloud of blue smoke. When the smoke cleared, the children disappeared. “When Tommy opened his eyes, he saw a big building in front of him. There was a sign on the building. He didn’t know what it said because it was written in Chinese characters. He did recognize the symbol on the sign. It was two exploding rockets. “The children walked toward the main gate. Two guards blocked it. Each guard had a big, fierce-looking dog on a leash. The dogs barked at the children as they walked past the gate. “What can we do? They won’t just give us fireworks for the Fourth of July show,” said Kim.

===============================================================

===============================================================

“Look, there’s a little park there,” said Andy. “Let’s go there and think about it.” “The children sat in the park and tried to think. It started to rain, so they found a shelter. “Nobody could think of a way to ask for fireworks from the factory. “Suddenly, they heard a loud crack of thunder. Then a bolt of lightning struck a tree near the factory. The tree burst into flames. The fire quickly spread to another tree.

“We must do something quickly,” said Tommy. “If the fire reaches the factory, all the fireworks will explode.” “Tommy didn’t wait. He ran as fast as he could to the factory gate. Taffy was running close behind him as they reached the two guards. The guards didn’t speak English so they couldn’t understand what Tommy was saying. “Taffy knew what to do. He growled at the big guard dogs. Taffy teased them until they ran after him.

The big dogs were dragging the guards behind them. Taffy and Tommy ran toward the fire, which spread to more trees. The guards soon realized what Tommy was trying to tell them. One of the guards took out his radio and called for help. The fire was now getting dangerously close to the factory. The guards motioned for the children to stay back. The children went to the shelter in the park where they would be safe. In a couple of minutes, the sound of sirens filled the air. A firetruck wanted to extinguish the burning trees. The fire spread to some sheds next to the factory

The firefighters rolled out their hoses and began to spray the fire. They were just in time. It only took them a few minutes to put out the fire.

One of the guards walked to where the children were waiting. He motioned for them to follow him. They walked through the gate and into the factory.

The children were shown into an office. A man in a blue suit sat behind a big desk. He said that he was Mr. Yip. He explained that he was the owner of the fireworks factory. He was very grateful that they had helped save his factory from the fire.

“I have arranged for you to tour my factory. You will see how fireworks are made,” said Mr. Yip.

“The children enjoyed the tour very much. It was interesting to see how the different types of fireworks were made.

“After the tour, the children were shown back to Mr. Yip’s office. “I’m glad you liked seeing how fireworks are made,” said Mr. Yip. “Is there anything else I can do for you?”

“ Tommy stepped forward. He explained what had happened to the Fourth of July fireworks. He asked Mr. Yip if the factory could help. “Well, I can’t let children take fireworks home. They are too dangerous. Tell me the name of your town, and I’ll see what I can do,” said Mr. Yip. The children were sad when they left the factory. They didn’t think Mr. Yip would be able to send fireworks by the next day. When the children were outside the factory

gates, they let RK-5 take them back home. They arrived back at the park and talked about their trip. They wished they could have the fireworks they saw at the factory for the Fourth of July celebration. “Then Tommy looked up. He shouted, “Look at that van. It has the same symbol as the factory in China.” “They all ran after the van. It stopped at the bottom of the park. This was where the fireworks show was to take place. “A man was opening the back doors of the van. Sam was the first to speak. “What are you doing?” she asked.

“Oh, hello, little girl. We’re delivering fireworks for tomorrow’s fireworks display,” he explained. “We had an emergency phone call from our factory in China. They told us to deliver all our best fireworks to this address. You are going to have the best fireworks display you’ve ever seen.” “The deliveryman didn’t know why all the children laughed so loudly.

IV. Vocabulary Focus

The Five Senses The five senses are sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste. Senses are very important. They help us perceive our surroundings and gather information about the world. Match the sense word in the left column and with the correct body part.

hearing nose

sight mouth

smell skin

taste ear

touch eye

Sense of Sight

The sense of sight is the most complex of the five senses. When we see

an object, we are actually seeing beams of light that are bouncing off

the object. The light enters the eye through the cornea (the transparent

covering) and goes through the pupil (the dark circle in the center of the

eye). It then passes through the lens and is projected onto the retina.

From there the information is sent to the brain, which tells us what we

are seeing.

Page 94: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

Sense of Sight With the help of your teacher do the following activities.

1. Choose several objects (such as shells, leaves, or flowers). Listing only the attributes you can see, compare the colors, shapes, and sizes; then put the objects in order according to color, shape, and size. Graph your results.

2. A person who cannot see is said to be visually impaired. Blindfold

a classmate, and then describe in words one of your objects, based only on what you can see, and without naming it.

3. After removing the blindfold, the classmate should then make a

drawing of the object, based on the visual description.

4. Compare the drawing with the object. Are there some other sight words that could have been used?

Things that Help Us See There are many tools that help us see things differently. Choose one of the instruments above and share with your classmates how it might make objects look different, and how you might use it. Can you think of any other instruments that help us to see differently?

Page 95: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

Sense of Hearing Using a dictionary or with the help of your teacher read about the second sense. Ears are specially designed body parts that enable us to hear. When an

object makes a noise, it sends sound waves through the air. Your outer

ear collects the sound waves like a funnel, then moves them into your

inner ear where they vibrate against your ear drum. Deep inside your ear

are the three smallest bones in your body, called the hammer, the anvil,

and the stirrup. Messages are sent from deep in your inner ear through

the auditory nerve to your brain, which tells you what you are hearing.

With a partner, walk around your classroom, school, and schoolyard and

listen carefully. One student will say what they hear while the other

writes it down.

1. Take turns walking blindfolded or with eyes closed; let your

partner guide you.

2. Spend time sitting quietly and listening.

3. What did you learn about the world by depending on your sense of

hearing?

Page 96: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

Sense of Touch The sense of touch is everywhere in your body because skin is the major

organ of the sense of touch. Areas such as fingertips are much more

sensitive than others.

Gather some common objects (apple, toy, fabric, sandpaper block) and

place each in a paper bag.

Take turns putting a hand in the bag, feeling the object, and then

describing it, using only touch words. Remember that touching reveals

size, shape, and texture. Write more words on the board to use later for

writing poetry.

Page 97: short stories - UMSA

===============================================================

===============================================================

Sense of Smell The sense of smell is very important to us, yet it is often overlooked.

The part of the body that we use to smell is inside the nose; the nose

also filters and moistens the air we breathe.

Your nose can tell you many things about the world around you. Smells

also stay surprisingly fresh in our memories. List the smells that the

following places remind you of.

zoo lunch room seashore

___________ ___________ ___________

___________ ___________ ___________

___________ ___________ ___________

Mother’s kitchen park carnival

___________ ___________ ___________

___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ ___________ Compared to animals, humans have a very weak sense of smell. Did you

know that a dog’s smell cells are 100 times larger than a human’s smell

cells, and that dogs have a million cells per nostril? Name something you

have observed about dogs and their sense of smell.

===============================================================

Good Smells/Bad Smells Scientists say that humans can tell the difference between 4,000-10,000 smells. Make two lists: smells that you like, or that are pleasant to you; and smells that you don’t like, that are unpleasant, or signal danger.

Sense of Taste

The sense of taste is controlled by thousands of tiny taste buds that

cover your tongue and the roof of your mouth. When you put food in

your mouth, saliva breaks it down and receptor cells in the taste buds

tell your brain what you are tasting. Taste buds recognize four types of

tastes: sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. Our tongue is divided into four

areas, each one sensitive to one of the four tastes. The center of the

tongue has very few taste buds.

2. Honey bees have 5,500 lenses in each eye.

3. Butterflies have taste buds in their feet.

4. Of all animals, dolphins have the best sense of hearing; they

hear14 times better than we do.

5. Fish have a “lateral” line along their bodies that senses changes in

water pressure and movement.

6. Frogs have an ear on the outside of their bodies behind the eye.

7. Penguins have a flat cornea that allows for clear vision

underwater.

8. Each of an ostrich’s eyes is two inches across and weighs more than
