I suppose it’s happened to all of us who have used a GPS. One time my daughter Rachel and I were headed for a restaurant in Boston. Having

entered the address, I began confidently driving about Beantown like a native Bostonian. Things were going great until I realized the GPS was leading me right into Boston Harbor!

That’s why you should always treat your GPS with a degree of suspicion. Worse than that, we can get addicted. Listening to that flat voice mispronouncing streets can have a dulling effect on the mind. We cease to navigate. We simply obey, and never really learn how to get there on our own.

The September edition of Network is more like a map than a GPS. It doesn’t presume to command you, but it does give you tips to navigating life at Calvary for this month and the near future. My own article on Just the Right Gift introduces you

to the new r3 initiative that will guide us into the future. John Ratz challenges you to the joys of community in Communities of Believers, and in this issue we offer a bit of Back to Ministry advice.

It’s up to you use the map. There’ll be no nagging voice to turn down, or turn off. And little danger of misdirection. But you will have to choose to engage.

Happy trails!

good sense to know what your mother likes. The chicken was delicious.”

The brown parrot was the perfect gift. Though it was not received quite as the giver intended, Mom was quite happy with it.

A Transitional Gift

As Calvary enters the inevitable transitional period that will lead to a new pastor, I want to give just the right gift to the church. That gift is a clear vision of the kind of church we all long for, and some very practical ways of getting there.

That’s what r3 is all about. R3 is a fresh expression of vision that will carry us into the future. It charts a course for people who call Calvary their home to

move from here, with me as your pastor to there, that point in the not-so-distant-future when a new captain will take the helm.

R3 isn’t just my gift. It comes from all of your leadership team. Long before there was any thought of Brussels, and missions and a new pastor for Calvary, we had begun the work of refreshing our vision as a church. The pastors then brought our dreams to the Board and they worked with it during an off-campus retreat. We shared it in June with the leadership core of the church, and now we’re ready to give our gift to you.

I’m asking you to receive it, not like the Mom in

the story, but in the spirit that it’s given. This is a provisional gift. It’s an interim plan. One that will give us momentum to get from here to there. The idea is that if we’re committed to moving in this particular direction, whoever God calls as your next pastor will find it easier to shift a moving ship, than to start a stranded one. I’m not asking you to commit to r3 forever, just until a new pastor comes and provides fresh God-given direction for the future.

A Gift to the New Pastor

If you should choose to accept the challenge of living strong into this fresh vision, you will not only be receiving my gift, but together we will be giving your new pastor a gift of inestimable

value, and one I know Calvary is quite capable of. Together we will be ensuring that whoever comes to Calvary will be taking on a vibrant, directional body of believers, already embracing a vision for the future, and pressing hard toward the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Phil. 3:10). That would be my greatest joy as the pastor who brought you this far.

And so the wonder of gift-giving is complete. I give you a gift, you give the future a gift, and in doing so I receive a gift from you. So I’ll try to make it just the right gift, and you, church, just make sure you don’t eat the talking parrot instead of receiving its wisdom!

David Courey

I love giving gifts. I just hate finding them. I’ve given the wrong gift enough times, so now I always try to find just the right gift. It’s a

challenge.

Three sons who came from a hardscrabble life had finally made it. They each wanted to top the other for the best gift on their mom’s eightieth birthday.

The first said, “I built a big house for our mother.”

The second said, “I sent her a Mercedes with a driver.”

The third smiled and said, “I’ve got you both beat. You know how Mom enjoys the Bible and you know she can’t see very well. I sent her a brown parrot that can recite the entire Bible. It took 20 monks in a monastery 12 years to teach him. I had to pledge to contribute $100,000 a year for 10

years, but it was worth it. Mom just has to name the chapter and verse and the parrot will recite it.”

Soon after the party, Mom sent out her letters of thanks:

She wrote the first son, “Milton, the house you built is so huge I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house.”

She wrote the second son, “Marvin, I am too old to travel and I stay home all the time, so I never use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!”

But then she wrote the third son, and it turns out he was right! He had bought the perfect gift! “Dearest Melvin, you were the only son to have the

Together we will be ensuring that whoever comes to Calvary will be taking on a vibrant, directional body of believers, already embracing a vision for the future, and pressing hard toward the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Phil. 3:10).

Christianity is a relational movement. It is not possible to live the life that the New Testament portrays unless we are intentional about being connected in community.

There are different types of communities.

Cambridge is a community. We identify with each other who live in Cambridge simply because of the geographical region we live in. Within Cambridge are sub-communities; Galt, Preston and Hespeler. And within these are smaller communities called neighborhoods.

The Church is also a type of community. A Community of Believers. We identify with each other, not by geography, but because of whose we are. The commonality of Christ provides our common identification point. Within the “Big C” Church are sub-communities; local “small C” churches. And within these local bodies, there needs to be smaller communities (like neighborhoods) where believers connect. We call them small groups.

Small Communities reflect the bigger picture.

Small groups are a microcosm of what the “Big C” church is supposed to be. Environments where Real People can live out a Real Life and grow in their relationship with a Real God.

It’s impossible to have the depth of relationships with the “Big C” church community for that to happen. The globe is just to big too connect with the believers in Serbia in a meaningful way. It’s even impossible to experience the depth of relationship at the “Little C” level of community. On a Sunday morning there is just too much activity to connect in meaningful ways.

Small groups provide the optimum environment to live out the New Testament mandates.

We need to gather at the “Little C” level of community. Sunday mornings are not optional to someone who claims to be a Christ-follower. But, it’s too easy to be lost (or hide) in the crowd. We can’t experience the Messy CommUnity that God calls us to live.

It is in the small group setting that most of us can know others and be known by others on the level that significant connection takes place. It is in this

by John Ratz

smaller setting that we can accept others and be accepted by others. It is in this smaller setting that we can encourage others and be encouraged by others. It is in this smaller setting that we can challenge others and yes, be challenged by others to grow in our faith.

We need to serve at the “Little C” level of community. Calvary has many ministries that impact the lives of others. But, often times the most meaningful ministry experiences we will have are a result of meeting the needs of someone that we have a personal relationship with.

In a small group we can learn of the difficult experiences that others are going through and serve them by helping in tangible and practical ways. Most of us wouldn’t think twice about going out of our way to help a close friend who is going through a difficult time. It’s because of the messy community that we will Serve AnyWay we can.

We need to learn at the “Little C” level of community. There is no question that Sunday morning provides information and inspiration as we walk along our spiritual path. But, adults learn best when we can discuss a topic and we can relate Scripture to our ExtraOrdinary Journey.

In a small group we can take the time to discuss biblical principles and how they relate to our daily living with incredible practicality. We can speak into the lives and experiences of others and they can speak into our lives. We can encourage others by pointing out how we can see God working in the daily routines of life.

Communities don’t just happen.

Simply living in Cambridge doesn’t really make you a part of the community. Simply living on a street doesn’t make you a part of that neighborhood. Attending a “Little C” church on Sunday mornings doesn’t make you a part of that community. Being a part of a community requires an intentional decision and action to be involved.

Where do you identify?

Plan on attending the small group connection on Sept 8th.

Calvary 101 There comes a time when you have to declare. It’s true for a loving relationship (we call it marriage) and it’s true for belonging to a local church (we call it membership). We see a difference between “members” and “adherents.” While everyone is welcome to attend Calvary, membership demonstrates a declaration, a commitment. Part of our membership process is attending a class, Calvary 101. We’ve scheduled Calvary 101 to happen on Sunday Sept 22 at 5 p.m.

Small Group Connection One of the best parts of church life is getting to know and be known by others in the church. We believe that organized small groups are the best way to facilitate those relationships. To give you a ‘taste and see’ experience for small groups, we’ve planned a four week series of studies that will align with our Sunday morning messages. Join us in the gym on Sunday Sept 8 (following the service you attend) and we’ll get you connected to a group.

Divorce Connections will meet on Sunday, Sept 8 at 7 p.m. No cost – no registration required! Eligibility – separated and/or divored.
