They say beauty is skin deep but with Julie Farley, beauty comes from the heart. The first thing I noticed when I met Julie was her beautiful skin – as clear and smooth as my 10 year old daughters. The next thing I noticed was her sincere generous spirit and desire to help women in our community. Julie started her business, The Make-Up Studio, downtown Spokane in 2001. Applying her experience working as a model the early 80’s in Europe and as a freelance makeup artist with the original North by Northwest productions in Spokane, Julie began doing what she loves. The studio carries a variety of exclusive and hard-to-find cosmetics and beauty products , and Julie and her staff give one on one sessions teaching makeup application. They also apply event makeup such as wedding, portrait or other special events.

Two years ago at the end of a beauty session, when advising her client to throw away makeup that she wasn’t using she was told. “I don’t want to throw it away, I can donate it to Our Place Community Ministries where I volunteer.” Julie realized that women in transition: coming out of abusive relationships, drug or alcohol rehabilitation, and homelessness do not have access to products considered basic necessities because it is not covered by food stamps. And she also realized that lack of basic hygiene products negatively impacts their confidence and ability to get a job. Can you imagine going into a job interview without deodorant, good hair products like hair spray and sans make-up? Many of these women have to do that every day. That is how PROJECT BEAUTY SHARE was born. Project Beauty donates to 10 shelters across Spokane and North Idaho. Needed items include makeup & makeup bags, deodorant, sunscreen, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bar soap, feminine hygiene products, combs & brushes, shampoo & conditioner, lotions, perfume & body sprays hair styling products, nail polish, nail polish remover, nail files, and razors. You can visit their website, www.projectbeautyshare.org for a list of drop-off sites.

This month Project Beauty Share will be having their 2nd Annual Toilet paper drive called “Can You Spare a Square?” Toilet paper is a household item that so many of us take for granted each day but it is not covered by food stamps. Local shelters report

that toilet paper is one of their most requested yet least-donated items. Toilet paper will be collected September 16 and 17 Downtown at The Make-Up Studio 216 N Bernard and in the Valley at Tracy Jewelers 106 North Evergreen Road.

Alternative Treatments for InfertilityWomen struggling with fertility come from all walks of life, and all ages, but all have experienced heart ache through their journey to parenthood. Coleen Smith at Point of Origin has proven to be a trusted resource for women in the Spokane area. The majority of her patients are referred by doctors in the area who recognize Coleen’s in-depth knowledge, and past successes whether women are trying to conceive naturally or through IVF. One treatment Coleen uses is acupuncture. How does acupuncture help increase fertility? There are five ways: first it helps to regulate menstrual cycles naturally and without side effects. Acupuncture has long been recognized as an anxiety reducer. Since stress is such a common problem associated with infertility, it makes sense that acupuncture would improve your odds of conceiving. Studies have shown that doing acupuncture about 30 minutes before and after in vitro fertilization can increase the chance that the embryo will be implanted successfully and reduce the chance of miscarriage. Acupuncture also regulates hormones, and helps with ovulation. Forty year old Jill came to see Coleen after she was told by her doctor that she was not going to conceive naturally because she had “poor ovarian reserve”. She came as a last resort,

hoping with all her heart she would conceive. By following Coleen’s advice including dietary changes and customized herb formulas, after 4 months Jill became pregnant for the first time. – Congratulations Jill on your beautiful baby girl!

Coleen Smith,RN has been practicing nursing since 1986. Coleen is a Diplomat, nationally certified in Oriental Medicine by the NCCAOM (DipNCCAOM, L.Ac.,CHM.).With a masters in herbology, Coleen is able to mix individual formulas for her patients. She is a board certified fellow of the ABORM, (American Board of Reproductive Medicine).

Why Women Should Do Resistance TrainingJustin Ulbright, MS, CSCSManager, SNAP Fitness, Cheney WA

“Why would I lift weights? I don’t want to get big muscles and look like a man! I want a trim, toned feminine figure, can’t I just do cardio?” Well, yes, cardiovascular exercise will help you lose weight but resistance training exercises is how to get trim and toned. And no, you won’t get big, manly muscles because, like every other woman on the planet, you lack the testosterone needed for such muscle growth. Along with weight loss, resistance training provides important health related benefits.

In addition to calorie burn for weight loss, resistance training exercises help to strengthen your muscles. Added strength can make work, chores, lifting kids, and other daily tasks easier. For older women, increased strength could even mean increased independence. Not having to rely on others for daily tasks improves one’s quality of life. Resistance training also firms and shapes the body.

Resistance training helps prevent osteoporosis by stimulating bone growth and regeneration. Osteoporosis is a disease that makes bones brittle, which can increase the risk of fractures. Resistance training causes muscles and tendons to pull on the bones. As that force continues over a period of time and progressively increases, your body adds more cells to your bones in an effort to adapt to the imposed demands. Total body resistance training that includes weight bearing exercises, such as squats, can drastically improve bone mineral density and help prevent osteoporosis. Ready to lift some weights? Stay motivated, keep lifting, and watch the inches disappear!

“100 Perfect Pairings: Main Dishes to Enjoy with Wines You Love,” by Jill Silverman Hough, courtesy of Wiley

INgREDIENTS:4 tablespoons of (1/2 stick) unsalted butter2 onions (about 1 pound), halved

lengthwise and thinly sliced2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Pastry dough for one 11-inch tart or 9-inch deep-dish pie

3 large eggs1 cup heavy whipping cream1.5 teaspoons ground nutmeg, preferably freshly grated1 sweet-tart baking apple, such as McIntosh or Jonathan

Special equipment: 11-inch fluted tart pan (1 1/8 inches deep) with a removable bottom

DIRECTIONS:In large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add onions, salt and pepper, stirring occasionally until soft, about 5 minutes. Reduce heat to very low, stirring occasionally, until onions are pale gold, about 20 minutes. Set aside to cool.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to a 14-inch circle. Fit dough into an 11-inch fluted pan with removable bottom. Trim excess to a 1/2-inch overhang, then fold it back into pan to reinforce fluted edge. Using a fork, pierce bottom of pastry all over. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 400o F.

Place chilled shell on rimmed baking sheet and line shell with foil and pie weights. Bake until pastry is set and pale gold along the rim, 15 to 20 minutes. Carefully remove foil and weights and continue baking until shell is golden all over, 10 to 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, in medium bowl, whisk together eggs, cream and nutmeg. Stir in onions. Peel, core and thinly slice apple.

Remove shell from oven, pour egg mixture in, and arrange apple slices decoratively on top. Press apples to slightly submerge them. Bake until top is lightly browned, 25 to 35 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Pair with a bottle of Gewürztraminer.

Serves 6 to 8.

While growing up in Pullman WA, Kim Beck imagined one day she would be in a corner office, wearing a suit and working for a corporation. Instead she shares an office with her husband and in-laws, traded the suit for an apron and added in some fresh fruit sampling, donut batter, and as a bonus, wine pouring, and she says she wouldn’t change a thing! The Harvest House in greenbluff was founded by the Beck family almost 30 years ago, and was the beginning of a renaissance in the area that has become a treasure to Spokane and CDA.

This has been a transition year for Kim and her husband Todd as Todd’s parent’s transition into retirement, they’ve had to step up this year and decide on the future of the business. One of the changes they have made is adding a wine store and a wine patio with a spectacular view of their orchard and the mountains beyond. “My husband and I love good food and wine...when we started serving lunches in our country kitchen the wine was just a natural progression. One of our favorite things to do is enjoy a nice bottle of wine in a beautiful setting, so we added our wine patio so our customers could do just that.” The Harvest House offers wine tasting daily as well as the option to enjoy a bottle or glass on the patio. They have also added a summer after- hours wine tasting event with appetizers and a this year featured wine from local Mercer Winery.

One of Kim’s favorite memories of Harvest House has been their involvement in KXLY’s Coats 4 Kids last fall. “We opened the maze for free to anyone who donated a coat. It was great to see over a hundred coats going to kids in our community in need. I hope to make that a yearly tradition.”

Kim has two young children herself, and I asked her how she balances a popular business and her busy family life, “I’m lucky in that I only live 200 yards from where I work so I get so see them quite often.

We decided awhile ago that it was important to have the kids around the business with us, so we have a babysitter that comes to our house and we also rely on the rest of the family for help. I love that I can work hard to support my family and still have lunch with my kids every day. I love seeing my daughter say to our customers “thanks for

coming out!” It makes it all worth it!
