6 RE The Carmel Pine Cone October 18, 2013
I am standing in front of 221B BakerStreet. It is Sherlock Holmes’ house, ofcourse. Mrs. Hudson is on the first floorcleaning Dr. Watson’s office. Holmes is in hisvery messy office on the second floor. Messybecause he is between cases. He is playingthe violin. There are several letters scatteredacross his desk. One is from Sigmund Freuddiscussing Holmes’ use of a 7 percent solu-tion of cocaine. Watson is on the third floortrying to stay out of earshot of the violinmusic. A lady, dressed all in black, is aboutto enter the front door. She has a new mys-tery for Holmes to solve – one that will causehis drooping eyelids to lift, and his nostrils toquiver with the thrill of the chase. Soon, he isto famously shout: “Come, Watson, come. The game is afoot.”
WHEN I wrote those words I was notactually in front of the great detective’shouse in London. Instead, I was in the mid-dle of the miniature town of Smallsea, a jour-
museum and not one is for sale.“We really don’t build for anyone else,”
Diane says, “It’s an adult hobby much likecollecting model trains, or soldiers, or any-thing miniature. I love getting others inter-ested in the hobby. I would be doing this any-way, so why not share it withpeople?”
What she does sell is veryhigh quality miniature furni-ture and accessories for otherpeople’s doll houses. The bestminiature furniture comesfrom China. Diane alwaysstocks enough for people to buy and takehome.
Howard, who is an architect, constructionconsultant, and project manager, had nointerest in the little houses.
“But Diane does nothing half way,” hesays. “She kept collecting more stuff andtelling me what kind of buildings and roomsshe needed, so off I would go to Home Depotto buy the materials.”
Howard and Diane both work on thebuildings, but there is a definite division oflabor. He does the exteriors while she workson the interiors. “She does all the electrical,”Howard says. Electrical? Yes, the lamps, exquisite chandeliers and lighting fixtureswork.
Everything is built on a one-twelfth scale(one inch equals one foot) Even the people. The population of Smallsea is approximatelyone thousand persons. The people (dolls) arecommissioned by Diane and made especial-ly for her in England, Spain, Belgium, andFrance. The average cost is $100.
The buildings in Smallsea are constructedin the British doll house manner, opening infront. American doll houses have no backs so
A trip the Barnyard can transport you to an earlier eraney back in time which arose from the talentand imagination of Diane and HowardBirnberg.
Smallsea is located in Carmel’s BarnyardShopping Center. Technically, the miniaturebuildings are doll houses, but it certainlywould be an injustice to the Birnbergs’ cre-ativity to label them as such. The buildingsof Smallsea are works of art. The shop is amuseum.
Smallsea is Edwardian, the period rough-ly covering the first decade of the 20thCentury. Diane’s extensive research ensuresthe historical accuracy of everything there. Ithas things that the residents of any villageneed to go about the business of everydaylife. Among the buildings are dress shops, afirehouse, a church, a grocery store, adepartment store, a bakery, a brewery, anewspaper building, and a (ahem) gentle-man’s club. There are horses and carriages, buses and early automobiles.
the perspectives are from the rear of thehouse. The entire facades of the Smallseabuildings are hinged to open wide.
“It gives us more leeway to decorate. Wecan install large fireplaces that take up amajor portion of a back wall,” Howard says.
From Baker Street I moved on to AllSaints Church, which has a real stained glasswindow. The attention to detail makes itimpossible to be a casual viewer. The violinsand guitars in the music store look ready tobe played. A colorful array of men’s shirtsare on display at the haberdashery, where agentleman sips twelve-year-old scotch whileshopping.
Smallsea is a journey back in time likeJack Finney’s book, “Time and Again,” or themovie “Somewhere in Time,” withChristopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.Collecting the miniature buildings may be anadult hobby, but while at Smallsea, one canbe a kid again. The town is seasonally deco-rated three times a year: Spring/Summer,Fall/Halloween and, for the holidays,Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The shop is open from noon to 5 p.m.Wednesday to Saturday. It is located in SuiteF-22 in the Barnyard. A $2 entry fee is sug-gested, but I’m sure small change would befine. Smallsea’s website is www.smallseami-ni.com.
Country Club Drive Price ReductionFor this well-located ranch house, high up Country Club Drive in CarmelValley, the price has been reduced $50,000. It offers good views of theSanta Lucia, a one-acre lot, four bedrooms and two baths, 2000 sf. Open this Sunday.

It looks like lots of folks who were under water but con-tinued meeting their obligations are whole again. We hopethat is the case.
The numbers predict a slow fourth quarter, but we will notknow for sure until January.
We look forward to getting back to our readers early nextyear with the fourth quarter and year end report which willgive us a definitive look at 2013.
Paul Brocchini and Mark Ryan are real estate agents withColdwell Banker Del Monte Realty’s Carmel-by-the-Seaoffice on Junipero Street, 2 southwest of Fifth. They can bereached at either (831) 601-1620 or (831) 238-1498.
THE THIRD quarter seems to have signaled a pause inour rebounding real estate market.
Although the quarter came in with a nice 10 percentincrease in total dollar volume— from $294,413,651 lastyear to $322,720,908 this year— overall activity seemed tobe on the decline.
The Market Barometerreveals the following: 127fewer listings than last year, definitely an overall tighten-ing of supply, and 139 fewerescrows than a year ago, a sig-nificant downturn in activity. In addition, seven of the tenmarkets had lower barometerreadings (percentage of list-ings in escrows), two were thesame and only one was up. Thelower barometer readings (139
fewer escrows) augur a fourth quarter significantly downfrom last year.
It appears buyers are taking a bit of a breather. It is nor-mal here for activity to drop off in the summer as the kindsof buyers we attract for the second home and retirement mar-ket are busy traveling all over the place.
But that alone does not explain the flattening. Maybe it isthe overall economy or maybe it is the uncertainty caused bythe malaise in Washington DC. No one knows, but the sag isreal.
Some hefty price jumpsAs always seems to be the case, there is a flip side,
Despite market slowdown, price increases continue in most areasreminding us of the famous Harry Truman quote that what heneeded was a “one-handed economist” after his economicadvisers constantly peppered him with astute analyses fol-lowed by the fearful, “but, on the other hand!”
Here is the other hand: On the price front, seven of the 10markets had year-to-year price increases during the quarter, while only three were down.
The rich markets of Carmel and Pebble Beach wereamong the worst performers, up 4 percent in Carmel anddown 11 percent in Pebble, whereas the medium-rich marketof Carmel Valley was up 15 percent.
The lower valued markets had some amazing jumps:Marina up 36 percent, , Monterey up 19 percent, and PacificGrove up an amazing 39 percent.
These charts are based in whole or in part on data supplied by theMonterey County Association of Realtors Multiple Listing Service (MLS).Neither the Association nor the MLS guarantees or is responsible for theiraccuracy. Data maintained by the Association or its MLS may not reflectall real estate activity in the market.
