Calculation of Hirsh index (h-index) from a plot of decreasing citations for numbered papers

The h-index is an index that attempts to measure both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar. The index is based on the set of the scientist's most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other publications. The index can also be applied to the productivity and impact of a group of scientists, such as a department or university or country, as well as a scholarly journal. The index was suggested by Jorge E. Hirsch, a physicist at UCSD, as a tool for determining theoretical physicists' relative quality and is sometimes called the Hirsch index or Hirsch number.

SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) based on SCOPUS data source

• Every year, SCImago Research Group publishes two reports on institutions, the Ibero-American SIR (SCImago Research Group, 2012a) and the Global SIR (SCImago Research Group, 2012b).

• The former usually appears in March and it includes all higher education institutions of Ibero-American countries with at least one document published in the Scopus data base during the five-year period.

• The Global SIR is published in July and it takes into account those organizations from any country, with at least 100 documents published in the last year of the five-year period. The chronological range extends from 2003 to 2012 and each report represents the five-year period with indicators.

Coverage periods of SCImago Institutions Rankings

SCImago Research Group, for the SIR implementation, processes information of documents contained in Scopus published from 2003 to the present, in each of the editions. Institutions are certainly units sensitive to onditioning factors external to the organization. Therefore, for the development of each SIR new version, five-year periods are set for the analysis. In this manner we stabilize the calculation of scientometric indicators and prevent to operate with data from one particular year related with a specific situation. The available versions of SIR are he following:

– SIR 2014. Scientific production on the period 2008-2012 – SIR 2013. Scientific production on the period 2007-2011 – SIR 2012. Scientific production on the period 2006-2010 – SIR 2011. Scientific production on the period 2005-2009 – SIR 2010. Scientific production on the period 2004-2008 – SIR 2009. Scientific production on the period 2003-2007

•The SCImago Journal & Country Rank is a portal that includes the journals and country scientific indicators developed from the information contained in the Scopus® database (Elsevier B.V.). These indicators can be used to assess and analyze scientific domains.•This platform takes its name from the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) indicator, developed by SCImago from the widely known algorithm Google PageRank™. This indicator shows the visibility of the journals contained in the Scopus® database from 1996.

Page Rank algorithm for measuring relative importance of scientific impact

•PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page and used by the Google Internet search engine, that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set.

•The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is referred to as the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).

A significant increase of abstracted papers was recorded during the period of 1989-2012 (from 50 abstracts to 180 abstracts, respectively) and a significant increase of relative research interest (from 0.00006% to 0.00018%, respectively). The relative increase for the period between 1989 and 2012 was 27.8% for the abstracts and 33.3% for the relative research interest

Conclusions• The rank of the Macedonia according the SCImago Journal & Country

Rank (SJR) is 99th in the world and 18th in the Eastern Europe.• Out of 20 Universities in Macedonia, only Ss Cyril and Methodius

University of Skopje and University St Clement of Bitola are listed in SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) for 2013.

• Very small number of Macedonian scholarly journals are included in WOS (1), PubMed (1), PubMed Central (1), SCOPUS (5), and Google Scholar metrics (6).

• SCOPUS rank and SCOPUS H-index are different for the top 10 authors from Macedonia.

• Top twenty Macedonian authors published 72.4% of the total number of abstracts indexed in PubMed.

• There is urgent need for organized improvement of the quality of researchers, scholarly journals, and institutions in Macedonia in order to achieve higher international standards.
