• Pythagoras discovered Venus, 6th century B.C.

• Copernicus discovered that Venus was a planet in the early 1500’s.

• Galileo correctly described this planet.

• (As seen by the unaided eye.)

Appearance

• Venus has no rings.

• The air on Venus is clear.

• The sky is red and is always covered by a dense haze.

• Venus appears to be similar to a heavily overcast day on Earth.

• You can never see the sun or the stars on Venus.

Distances

• Venus is the second planet from the sun.• Venus’ aphelion is 0.73 AU, (Maximum)

distance from the sun.• Venus’ perihelion is 0.72 AU, (Minimum)

distance from the sun.• Venus is 0.27 AU from the earth, (that is

40 million km!)• (AU stands for Astronomical Unit(s)

Planet Measurements

• Venus’ mass is 4.868*1024 kg.

• Venus’ volume is 9.83*1011km^3.

• Venus’ equatorial circumference is 12,104 km.

• Venus’ mean density is 5.25 (gm/cm^3)

• Venus’ gravity is 85% of the gravity on Earth.

• If you weighed 100 lbs. on Earth you would weigh 90.7 lbs on Venus.
