SODA REFRESHING DRINK OR A

CORROSIVE AGENT?

PURPOSE:The purpose of this experiment is to determine which type of soda caused more corrosion to a penny; dark colored or light colored.

Independent variable: The type of soda used

Dependent variable: The amount of corrosion

Constant variable: The amount of soda in the cup, the size of the cup, the amount of time penny spends in the soda.

Control Variable : One cup filled with spring water

HYPOTHESIS:

I believe that because the dark colored soda has a higher carbonic acid concentration than the light colored soda, it will have more corrosive effect on a penny. As a result, penny left in the dark colored soda will look less tarnished than the one left in the light colored soda.

PROCEDURE:

The first part of this experiment was to locate four pennies with the same amount of tarnish on them. Each penny was placed in a cup with one cup of each soda used. One cup contained spring water and the others contained Coke, Sprite and Sunkist. The pennies were placed in each cup and left for five days. Each day in the afternoon, the pennies were checked for corrosiveness or amount of tarnish worn off the penny. The pennies were photographed on the first and last day.

MATERIALS: 1 can of Coca Cola 1 can of Sunkist orange soda 1 can of Sprite 1 small bottle of spring water Four plastic cups Four tarnished pennies Logbook Measuring cup Post-it notes and permanent marker for labeling

The penny left in dark soda had less tarnish than the ones left in other sodas, while the one in the spring water remained unchanged. I found that my hypothesis was correct and the darker colored sodas did cause more corrosion overall than the lighter colored sodas. The carbonic acid reacted with the residue on a penny and acted as a mild cleaning agent.
