WHY THEOLOGY?

When you hear the word ‘theology’ what do you think?

Perhaps you think of academic ivory towers, people reading big

books using even bigger words and concepts that seem far

removed from real life.

So what do we do? Do we leave theology to the professionals?

No. Karl Barth said ‘In the Church of Jesus Christ there can and

should be no non-theologians.’ But where are these

theologians and who are they? The answer is YOU!

Theology belongs in the heart of the local church.

Theology belongs in the hands of disciples of Jesus.

Page 4: School of Theology brochure

HOW WILL IT WORK?

St Thomas Crookes has a passion to encourage disciples to get involved

and think about theology, believing passionately that theology belongs

in the heart of the church and should be open to all, not just the

academic few.

So, this year we are partnering with St Paul’s Theological Centre,

London (based at Holy Trinity Brompton) to make theology as relevant

and as accessible as possible, and to bring to Sheffield some of the most

engaging speakers around.

This will happen through a combination of live speakers (mainly from

the staff team of SPTC, and other guests) and DVD presentations filmed

at Holy Trinity Brompton. The School of Theology offers an opportunity

to engage with theology in a down to earth and relevant way.

Each time we meet, there will be two

different tracks running alongside

each other. Participants choose one of

the two, and stay with this track

throughout the year. We always begin

with worship together, and then

divide into the two tracks for the rest

of the morning. Each morning has a

presentation from a speaker, a

coffee break, and then small group

discussion.

BIBLE TRACK

An introduction to the Bible, this track aims to help you become familiar

with its story, know its key themes, and learn how to read it wisely in

today’s world. This track is especially aimed at those with no or little

experience of studying theology, but who want to increase their

understanding of the Bible, and create a firm foundation to build on.

It covers such topics as:

• The story of the Bible

• The different kinds of writing in the Bible

• In depth introductions to some key books

• Some central Bible themes

FAITH TRACK

This track aims to give a guide to the basic building blocks of Christian

belief, sometimes known as systematic theology. It builds on a basic

knowledge of the Bible, so it is advised that participants would have

already read/thought about theology in some form.

It covers such topics as:

• Creation

• The Origins of Evil

• Understanding Jesus

• The Holy Spirit

Who can take the courses?

Anyone who wants to deepen their faith and understand it more fully, so

that they can be more effective in living a life of discipleship. It is ideal

both for those who have recently come to a new faith, or those who

have been Christians for many years.

But I don’t know anything about theology!

You probably know more than you think. In any case, we don’t assume

that participants have studied any theology before. After all, you have to

start somewhere. The 2 tracks can be taken in any order, but if you are

not sure where to start, we suggest you begin with the Bible track.

Who will teach it?

SPTC have filmed some of the best thinkers/communicators at Holy

Trinity Brompton, London. We will be watching those sessions on DVD,

and some of the SPTC staff will travel to Sheffield to present some of the

sessions live.

Do I have to belong to St Thomas Crookes to take the course?

No. The course is aimed at all those who are seeking to increase their

understanding of their faith, although some participants may also be

from St Thomas Crookes.

INTRODUCTION

Toms musing about Theology...

SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY

The School of Theology offers an opportunity to listen to some of

the best thinkers and communicators of Christian faith today, to

chew over these ideas with others, and a great way to get to know

people who are on the same journey as you are.

Each time we meet, there will be two different tracks running

alongside each other. Participants can choose one of the two, and

stay with this track throughout the year. We always begin with

worship together, and then divide in to the two tracks for the rest

of the morning. Each morning has input from a speaker, time to ask

questions and for group discussion.

RESOURCES There are two key books that will accompany the School of Theology.

Both books are available through Christian retailers and online at

www.amazon.co.uk.

How to read the Bible for all it’s worth by Gordon Fee

(free with full Bible track)

The primary task of Bible study is to determine what

the Scriptures meant at the time they were written and

how that meaning applies to us today. This vital guide

focuses on the historical contexts of the Bible and

explains differences between the Old Testament

narratives, the Epistles, Gospels, Parables, Psalms and

more. It's a practical approach to Bible study - one that

makes good sense and is easy to understand.

Cafe Theology by Mike Lloyd

(free with full Faith track)

If theology doesn't stretch our minds, it probably won't

stretch our lives. In "Cafe Theology", Mike invites us to

grab a cappuccino and travel with him from Creation to

New Creation, as he presents us with a rich and human

view of life and of Life-Giver. Whether we've been on

the Christian journey our whole life, we're just starting

out or we haven't even bought a ticket, this

extraordinary book is applicable to our ordinary lives.
