THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

The journey of a disciple of Jesus may take many directions. As one of the first men called to discipleship by the Lord, Peter found that his world was turned around and changed forever. And yet, in following the Lord, he found a peace that passed all understanding. In the final words of his second epistle, he wrote to his Christian flock, “Therefore, beloved . . . be . . . at peace” (2 Peter 3:14). The people of God are peaceable people through whom the Spirit works, fashioning them as peacemakers and peace-bringers to a world in need of the peace that is in Christ alone.

COME, NOW IS THE TIME TO WORSHIP Doerksen

Come, now is the time to worship. Come, now is the time to give your heart.

Come, just as you are to worship. Come, just as you are before your God.

One day ev’ry tongue will confess You are God. One day ev’ry knee will bow.

Still, the greatest treasure remains for those who gladly choose You now.

Come, now is the time to worship. Come, now is the time to give your heart.

Come, just as you are to worship. Come, just as you are before your God.

I SAW THE LIGHT Williams

I wandered so aimless, life filled with sin; I wouldn't ask my dear Savior in.

Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night; Praise the Lord, I saw the light! I saw the light, I saw the light.

No more darkness; no more night. And now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight.

Praise the Lord, I saw the light!

Just like a blind man I wandered along, Worries and fears I claimed for my own.

Then, like the blind man that God gave back his sight; Praise the Lord, I saw the light! I saw the light, I saw the light.

No more darkness; no more night. And now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight.

Praise the Lord, I saw the light!

I was a fool to wander and stray, Straight is the gate and narrow the way.

Now I have traded the wrong for the right; Praise the Lord, I saw the light! I saw the light, I saw the light.

No more darkness; no more night. And now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight.

Praise the Lord, I saw the light!

Pastoral Greeting PASTOR LARSON

Hymn of Worship Shine, Jesus, Shine

INVOCATION and OPENING SENTENCES

P In the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,

faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?

C So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

Divine Service

P In peace let us pray to our heavenly Father, confident of His forgiveness for Jesus’ sake.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination

P Heavenly Father, C we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have failed to live

in the fruit of Your Holy Spirit, in our thinking, speaking, and acting. We have not loved You completely or our neighbors as ourselves. We have let the turmoil in this world subvert the peace You have provided us. We have not let our hearts take courage and waited for the Lord. Our Lord Jesus revealed His person and ministry through His words and actions. In Your great mercy, forgive, renew, and lead us so that we may be revealed as His faith-filled followers to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Lord, the light of Your love is shining, In the midst of the darkness, shining; Jesus, light of the world, shine upon us,

Set us free by the truth You now bring us. Shine on me, shine on me.

Shine, Jesus, shine, fill this land with the Father’s glory; Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire.

Flow, river, flow, flood the nations with love and mercy; Send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light!

As we gaze on Your kingly brightness, So our faces display Your like ness, Ever changing from glory to glory, Mirrored here, may our lives tell Your story.

P “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.” Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

SERVICE OF THE WORD

Old Testament: Isaiah 9:1-4

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan--

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder. For as in the day of Midian's defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor.

L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God!

Prayer of the Day P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Heavenly Father, by the sacrifice of Your Son, You have established

peace with us sinners. C Give us the peace that passes all understanding so that we might live in

peace with one another; P through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen.

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 1:10-18

I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas"; still another, "I follow Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God!

Congregation, please stand.

The Holy Gospel: Matthew 4:12-25

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the fourth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to Galilee. Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali--to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

"Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles--the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."

From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets.

Sermon Song

Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them. Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him. P The Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.

THE LORD IS MY LIGHT Harrah

The Lord is my light and my salvation, the Lord is the strength of my life. The Lord is my light and my salvation, the Lord is the strength of my life.

So I will not be afraid, no, I will not be afraid; Because the Lord is my light, the Lord is my light, the Lord is my light.

In the day of trouble He will hide me; He will keep me safe, He will guide me through.

The Lord is my light and my salvation, the Lord is the strength of my life. The Lord is my light and my salvation, the Lord is the strength of my life.

So I will not be afraid, no, I will not be afraid; Because the Lord is my light, the Lord is my light, the Lord is my light.

In the darkest hour he will keep me; Evil has no power when He shelters me.

The Lord is my light and my salvation, the Lord is the strength of my life. The Lord is my light and my salvation, the Lord is the strength of my life.

So I will not be afraid, no, I will not be afraid; Because the Lord is my light, the Lord is my light, the Lord is my light.

P Let us pray for God’s people around the world and all who call out to Him in their various needs.

Sovereign God, when people anywhere are in conflict, are driven by hate, or are living in countries with cruel taskmasters or brutal regimes, surround them with Your love. Use us to bring word of Your compassionate embrace so that they may endure until relief is realized. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer. P Lord Jesus, we pray for all who face this day in sadness or grief, are facing

sudden crisis or long-term ill, or are mourning the loss of a loved one. [We remember especially . . .] Restore joy to them through those who care about them—professionals, family, and friends—all who know the joy of Your gracious presence. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer. P O Holy Spirit, open doors of opportunity for people of peace so that nations will

not raise up sword against one another, societies may be ordered for the good of all, and Your kingdom of grace may be extended without persecution. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer. P Father in heaven, give patience to all who make, administer, and adjudicate the

laws of the nations. Grant them willing ears and calm hearts to make decisions that will benefit the lives of all their citizens. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer. P Gracious Lord, whose kindness knows no end, bring to repentance all who have

turned from Your way. Use people of faith to bring Your Word to them that they may hear anew the precious Gospel of Your Son. Grant to us the wisdom to know when to speak and what to say. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer. P Enlivening Spirit, Jesus revealed His person and ministry during His time on

earth. Now shine Your goodness through us who worship here and those who gather around Your Word and Sacraments worldwide so that we may be seen as His adopted brothers and sisters. Strengthen us to carry on His work at home, at work, or in school to the glory of Your holy name. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer. P Lord over all, grant faithfulness in their calling to all who raise and distribute

food, all who guard and protect their neighborhoods and nations, all who tend the sick and wounded, and all who build homes and manage businesses. May their efforts benefit the entire society in which they live. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer. P Loving Lord, help us to act in gentleness toward the forgotten in society, the

invisible poor, the forgotten in prison, those about to be born, and those nearing their end of days. Open our eyes to opportunities to serve their needs in Your name. Lord, in Your mercy,

C hear our prayer. P Triune God, guide the leaders of the Church around the world so that they may

I, The Lord of Sea and Sky, I have heard my people cry, All who dwell in deepest sin My hand will save

I, who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright

Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am Lord. Is it I, Lord?

I have heard You calling in the night I will go, Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne My people’s pain. I have wept for love of them. They turn away

I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone.

I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send? Here I am Lord. Is it I, Lord?

I have heard You calling in the night I will go, Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame. I will set a feast for them. My hand will save.

Finest bread I will provide till their hearts be satisfied.

I will give My life to them. Whom shall I send? Here I am Lord. Is it I, Lord?

I have heard You calling in the night I will go, Lord, if You lead me. I will hold Your people in my heart.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

HOLY COMMUNION AT ASCENSION

The Lord, our Host, invites to his Supper those who are baptized into the Christian faith, confess him as Savior, have examined themselves, truly repent of sins, believe the Risen Lord is present in the sacrament with his true body and blood, and resolve to live faithfully and obediently. For those with an intolerance to alcohol, the center ring of the tray contains grape juice. Gluten free wafers are available to those with wheat allergies. Children who have not been instructed, yet desire a blessing, are invited to come forward with arms crossed. Come, for the Supper is ready! When receiving the bread and wine, the communicant may respond with “Amen!”, a word of affirmation and belief.

P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Page 10: SCENSION LUTHERAN HURCH

The Words of Consecration

P In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of pow’r and might! Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The Lord’s Prayer LSB (Inside back-cover)

THE WONDERFUL CROSS

When I survey the wondrous cross, On which the Prince of Glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride.

See, from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

O, the wonderful cross, O, the wonderful cross, Bids me come and die and find That I may truly live. O, the wonderful cross, O, the wonderful cross, All who gather here by grace Draw near and bless Your name.

Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were an offering far too small? Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

O, the wonderful cross, O, the wonderful cross, Bids me come and die and find That I may truly live. O, the wonderful cross, O, the wonderful cross, All who gather here by grace Draw near and bless Your name.

Page 11: SCENSION LUTHERAN HURCH

Communion Benediction

P The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace.

C Amen.

A SHIELD ABOUT ME Thomas—Willams

Thou, O Lord, are a shield about me. You’re my glory. You’re the lifter of my head.

Thou, O Lord, are a shield about me. You’re my glory. You’re the lifter of my head.

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, You’re the lifter of my head.

BECAUSE HE LIVES Gaither

Because He lives I can face tomorrow; because He lives all fear is gone;

because I know He holds the future, and life is worth the living just because He lives.

DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME Christopher

Do this in remembrance of Me. Do this in remembrance of Me.

This is my body, this is my blood. Do this in remembrance of Me.

This is My body given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me. This cup’s the new covenant,

sealed in My blood. Do this in remembrance of Me.

For whenever you eat this bread and whenever you drink this cup, as you do you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

Do this in remembrance of Me. Do this in remembrance of Me.

This is my body, this is my blood. Do this in remembrance of Me.

Post Communion Prayer

P We give you thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through the healing power of this gift of life; and we pray that in your mercy you would strengthen us through this gift, in faith toward you and fervent love toward one another; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

C Amen.
