BCCI secy fires salvo after Pietersen picked for Pataudi Lecture NEW DELHI, May 18: BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary today fired a fresh salvo after Kevin Pietersen was picked to deliver the Annual MAK Pataudi Memorial Lecture during its Awards function in Bengaluru on June 12. While Chaudhary had earlier expressed his strong reserva- tions at the panel that was short- listed (Kumar Sangakkara, Nasser Hussain, Sourav Ganguly and Kevin Pietersen), he is livid with GM (Cricket Operations) Saba Karim for ignoring the names of Indian stalwarts of yesteryears. Chaudhary had suggested the names of Erapalli Prasanna, Abbas Ali Baig, Nari Contractor -- all of whom have played alongside Tiger. The acting secretary in an email (in possession of PTI) took a sarcastic dig at former India stumper Karim after the latter in an email said that "he was happy to announce that Kevin Pietersen has agreed and confirmed to deliver the MAK Pataudi Memorial Lecture." "GM (Cricket Operations) expression of happiness on it had left me wondering on whether the Memorial Lecture was indeed MAK Pataudi Memorial Lecture or Sir Len Hutton Lecture or for that matter Frank Woolley Memorial lec- ture," Chaudhary wrote with ref- erence to former England leg- ends. The former Jharkhand top cop expressed his dismay that Karim didn't follow-up on his suggestions and didn't commu- nicate on the subject. He had five specific ques- tions for Karim, 1) How was the list of four arrived at without adverting to conversations on very subject on May 8 in Bengaluru? 2) Why 75 per cent of the names were that of for- eigners? 3) Relevance (of Pietersen) delivering the lecture was not explained? 4) Why was Sangakkara's unavailability not recorded when COA chief Vinod Rai had said that he was open to other names? 5) On basis of which authorization was jump made to Pietersen's name with- out seeking authorization to do so? The acting secretary accused Karim of not disclosing his sug- gestions with the CoA and mak- ing decision in an unilateral manner. Referring to Karim's earlier mail when the panel of four was shortlisted, he wrote: "Significantly, the prose inexpli- cably left out the discussions held at Bangalore on the subject two days earlier. It is obvious from the context that the CoA learnt of it first only with the proposal email on the 10th (May)." While concluding, Chaudhary has asked for a "rec- tification" as significance of the Lecture is being derailed. "Unable to stomach the ease with which the significance of the Lecture was being derailed, as also the fact that GM (Cricket Operations) had solicited our views in his email, I wrote an earnest email to attempt rectifi- cation, if possible." (PTI) Former India star Madan Lal to contest DDCA elections NEW DELHI, May 18: Former India all-rounder Madan Lal is expected to contest for one of the three major posts during the upcoming Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) election on June 30. It is learnt that the Lal will be contesting for either President, Vice-president or Director's post in the upcoming election. "It is true that Madan Lal has been sounded out and he is keen on serving Delhi cricket as he has done as a cricketer, captain, coach, selector and finally as the head of Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC)," a senior DDCA official said. "Madan is one of the biggest names in Delhi cricket and he enjoys a lot of respect among his peers. Even the former crick- eters would be happy to see one of their own in a commanding position," the official said. It is learnt that Lal would have the backing of the group, which is being supported by BCCI's acting president CK Khanna. Depleted RR face resurgent RCB JAIPUR, May 18: Weakened by the departure of Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes, Rajasthan Royals will have their task cut out when they lock horns with a resurgent Royal Challengers Bangalore, in the Indian Premier League here tomorrow. As the race for playoffs heats up, five teams are in with a chance to make the cut. (PTI) Indian women's hockey team ready for Korean challenge DONGHAE CITY (KOREA), May 18: The Indian women's hockey team will take on hosts Korea in its last round-robin match at the 5th Women's Asian Champions Trophy here tomorrow. The team led by defender Sunita Lakra remains unbeaten in the tournament, having won against Japan (4-1), China (3-1) and Malaysia (3-2). While playing the World No.9 side in their home ground will be a challenging affair for the Indian team, it will serve as an ideal preparation for the Final on Sunday where they will play Korea who have won two matches (3-1 against Malaysia, 3-1 against China) and drawn one (1-1 against Japan) in the round-robin stage. "Korea is a good team, but our girls have played this tour- nament with a lot of confidence. We are not so bothered about this being their home ground but want to just focus on our- selves and carry forward the good momentum," stated chief coach Sjoerd Marijne. The team has played this tournament with aggression and have showcased impressive attack. But playing a highly defensive team like Korea, India needs to ensure they don't make errors. "The Koreans like to play high press. It will be important for us to not let that pressure affect our game and we need to ensure we don't make mistakes in our own half. Besides this, we will need to move the ball fast to create space," added the chief coach on the eve of the match. Daredevils pull off surprise win over CSK NEW DELHI, May 18: Delhi Daredevils restored some pride with an upset 34-run win over the formidable Chennai Super Kings in a dead rubber of the Indian Premier League here tonight. Vijay Shankar (36* off 29) and Harshal Patel (36* off 16) scripted Daredevils' recovery after a pedestrian performance from the top-order, helping the hosts reach 162 for five with an unbeaten 65-run stand off 32 balls. Leg-spinners Amit Mishra (2/20) and Sandeep Lamichhane (1/21) then starred in an impres- sive bowling effort that restrict- ed CSK to 128 for six. All- rounder Patel chipped in with the ball as well by taking the prized wicket of Ambati Rayudu (50 off 29). It was Daredevils' fourth win of the season in 13 games. The already eliminated team has one more game to play on Sunday. The unexpected loss was CSK's fifth in 13 matches and they remain second on the points table. CSK were cautious to begin with, collecting just 22 runs off the first five overs. Rayudu cut loose in the fol- lowing over, smashing pacer Avesh Khan for 22 runs cour- tesy three sixes and a four. Rayudu, the team's leading run scorer with 585 runs at 48.75, maintained his rich vein of form with his third fifty of the season. He departed the very next ball to leave CSK at 70 for two in 10 overs, needing 93 off the last 60 balls. Suresh Raina (15 off 18), dropped by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant on the first ball he faced, did not make it count as Nepal spinner Lamichhane had him caught at deep mid- wicket. Skipper MS Dhoni (17 off 23) could not do the finishing job for his team which never really got going in the chase. Earlier, Lungi Ngidi (2/14) broke the backbone of Delhi batting by removing Shreyas Iyer (19 off 22) and Pant (38 off 26) in the 11th over. Shankar and Patel lent some respectability to the total with a blistering partnership. The final flourish included a 26-run 20th over when Dwayne Bravo was hammered for four sixes. It was an inconsequential game but a sizable number of Dhoni fans blended with the home team's supporters to make it a packed house. RCB and Sunrisers chased down 180 plus target with ease in the previous two games at Kotla and expectedly the CSK skipper Dhoni had no hesita- tion in bowling first. Delhi were sluggish at the start, mustering just 39 runs in six-over Powerplay. Prithvi Shaw (17 off 17) was out cheaply for the third game in a row after he played a loose stroke to be caught at long-on. Iyer opened the innings with Shaw in Jason Roy's absence and Delhi skipper's innings too was a shaky one. The captain shared a 54-run stand for the second wicket with the in-form Pant but the South African pacer Ngidi removed them in the same over to leave Delhi at 81 for three. Iyer was bowled while mak- ing room for a big shot while Pant mistimed a hit over mid- wicket to be caught at third man. Delhi had lost two of their main batsmen shortly after Pant punished veteran Harbhajan Singh for two sixes and a four in the 10th over which leaked 17 runs. The momentum the Delhi innings picked up from the Harbhajan over did not last long. Playing for pride after another sorry season, Delhi batsmen looked out of sorts. Glenn Maxwell's disastrous run continued when he saw his stumps disturbed after attempt- ing a reverse sweep off Ravindra Jadeja. KKR take on formidable SRH in crucial game HYDERABAD, May 18: Kolkata Knight Riders will have no margin for error when they take on hosts Sunrisers Hyderabad, who will fancy their chances despite coming off a defeat, in the Indian Premier League here tomorrow. Currently occupying the top spot with nine wins from 13 matches, Sunrisers are coming into the game following a 14-run loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore in a high-scoring match, but the home team can take confidence from their impressive showing in the sea- son so far. Two-time champions KKR are placed third in the standings with seven wins in 13 outings, and the visitors will be going all out for a victory at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, and inch closer to SRH and Chennai Super Kings. After Sunrisers' dismal per- formance against RCB with the ball, which has been one of their strong points this season, the hosts will be eager to correct the flaws as they brace up to face another tough opposition. Sunrisers are likely to ring in a couple of changes and pacer Basil Thampi, who yesterday bowled the most expensive four overs in the history of IPL, could be one of the axed players. Thampi leaked 70 runs in his full quota of four overs, surpass- ing the previous record held by Ishant Sharma. While the bowlers were taken to task by the likes of AB de Villiers and Moeen Ali in their last game, Sunrisers showed a lot of heart while bat- ting, coming within touching distance of a famous win. Aggregating over 600 runs this season, skipper Kane Williamson has led the side from the front, and he will look to do it again. The 81 off 42 balls against RCB was Williamson's eighth fifty-plus score in IPL 2018. Having missed out against RCB, opener Shikhar Dhawan will be keen to get a big one against the Knight Riders. Manish Pandey, who blazed away to a half century against Virat Kohli's bowlers, will look to continue in the same vein. In bowling, pace spearhead Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was not played in the last game, could be back alongside Rashid Khan, Siddarth Kaul and Shakib Al Hasan. Daredevils pull off surprisewin over CSK

NEW DELHI, May 18:

Delhi Daredevils restoredsome pride with an upset 34-runwin over the formidableChennai Super Kings in a deadrubber of the Indian PremierLeague here tonight.

Vijay Shankar (36* off 29)and Harshal Patel (36* off 16)scripted Daredevils' recoveryafter a pedestrian performancefrom the top-order, helping thehosts reach 162 for five with anunbeaten 65-run stand off 32balls.

Leg-spinners Amit Mishra(2/20) and Sandeep Lamichhane(1/21) then starred in an impres-sive bowling effort that restrict-ed CSK to 128 for six. All-rounder Patel chipped in withthe ball as well by taking theprized wicket of AmbatiRayudu (50 off 29).

It was Daredevils' fourthwin of the season in 13 games. The already eliminated teamhas one more game to play onSunday. The unexpected losswas CSK's fifth in 13 matchesand they remain second on thepoints table.

CSK were cautious to beginwith, collecting just 22 runs offthe first five overs.

Rayudu cut loose in the fol-lowing over, smashing pacerAvesh Khan for 22 runs cour-tesy three sixes and a four.

Rayudu, the team's leadingrun scorer with 585 runs at48.75, maintained his rich veinof form with his third fifty ofthe season. He departed thevery next ball to leave CSK at70 for two in 10 overs, needing93 off the last 60 balls.

Suresh Raina (15 off 18),dropped by wicketkeeperRishabh Pant on the first ballhe faced, did not make it countas Nepal spinner Lamichhanehad him caught at deep mid-

wicket. Skipper MS Dhoni (17 off

23) could not do the finishingjob for his team which neverreally got going in the chase.

Earlier, Lungi Ngidi (2/14)broke the backbone of Delhibatting by removing ShreyasIyer (19 off 22) and Pant (38off 26) in the 11th over.Shankar and Patel lent somerespectability to the total with ablistering partnership. The finalflourish included a 26-run 20thover when Dwayne Bravo washammered for four sixes.

It was an inconsequentialgame but a sizable number ofDhoni fans blended with the

home team's supporters tomake it a packed house.

RCB and Sunrisers chaseddown 180 plus target with easein the previous two games atKotla and expectedly the CSKskipper Dhoni had no hesita-tion in bowling first.

Delhi were sluggish at thestart, mustering just 39 runs insix-over Powerplay.

Prithvi Shaw (17 off 17) wasout cheaply for the third game in

a row after he played a loosestroke to be caught at long-on.

Iyer opened the innings withShaw in Jason Roy's absenceand Delhi skipper's innings toowas a shaky one. The captainshared a 54-run stand for thesecond wicket with the in-formPant but the South African pacerNgidi removed them in thesame over to leave Delhi at 81for three.

Iyer was bowled while mak-ing room for a big shot whilePant mistimed a hit over mid-wicket to be caught at third man.

Delhi had lost two of theirmain batsmen shortly after Pantpunished veteran Harbhajan

Singh for two sixes and a four inthe 10th over which leaked 17runs. The momentum the Delhiinnings picked up from theHarbhajan over did not last long.Playing for pride after anothersorry season, Delhi batsmenlooked out of sorts.

Glenn Maxwell's disastrousrun continued when he saw hisstumps disturbed after attempt-ing a reverse sweep off RavindraJadeja. (PTI)

Currently occupying the topspot with nine wins from 13matches, Sunrisers are coming

into the game following a 14-runloss to Royal ChallengersBangalore in a high-scoringmatch, but the home team cantake confidence from theirimpressive showing in the sea-son so far.

Two-time champions KKRare placed third in the standingswith seven wins in 13 outings, and the visitors will be going allout for a victory at the RajivGandhi International Stadium, and inch closer to SRH andChennai Super Kings.

After Sunrisers' dismal per-formance against RCB with theball, which has been one of theirstrong points this season, thehosts will be eager to correct theflaws as they brace up to faceanother tough opposition.
