• Challenges• Lack of Customer Awareness• Land Acquisition problems• Initial Cost of Setting up Power Plant is
still high
Overview•Solar energy is generated via 2 kinds of technology: Solar Photovoltaic (PV) technology Solar thermal technology•PV are arrays of cells containing solar photovoltaic material that converts solar radiation into electricity•In India, nearly 98% of solar modules manufactured use crystalline silicon technology and merely 2% of modules are manufactured using Thin Film technology
Value Chain – SPV Market
• Solar panel production is done using two technologies –• Crystalline silicon cells – Most dominant technology with more than 87% market share• Thin-film cells – Fastest growing technology due to silicon shortage

- In West Bengal the solar energy will solve power woes of the state, which desperately needs development. According to survey the state gets 90% power from coal and crisis is increasing daily.
- There are about 2,000 villages in west Bengal where conventional electric line cannot be extended due to prohibitive cost. 400 villages out of these 2000 villages have already been electrified by Solar PV route.
- The multi-storey buildings in the state of West Bengal can be encouraged to install solar panels on the rooftops for power generation,
- Govt. of West Bengal is in the process of making mandatory for all the public buildings to have solar devices to meet electricity requirements and other applications. All existing and upcoming commercial and business establishments having more than 1.5 MW of contract demand will be required to install solar rooftop systems to meet at least 2% of their total electrical load. Further, all the existing and upcoming schools and colleges, hospitals, large housing societies and Government establishments having a total contract demand of more than 500 KW will be required to install solar rooftop systems to meet at least 1.5% of their total electrical load
-
- Solar rooftop and small solar PV installations can provide a significant amount of energy for in-house loads, reducing peak system demands in urban establishments. Depending on the rooftop area available and building loads, these solar systems can be as large as 0.5 MW and can power a majority of the building’s loads.
-Urban local bodies like Municipal Corporations, Utilities, City, Corporations, commercial building like offices and malls may form an essential part of the installation as they posses buildings with considerable roof space..
