From the Friars On Wednesday, January 25 we celebrate the only feast in the liturgical calendar dedicated to a conver-sion—the Conversion of Saint Paul. It is hard to think of a saint who had more influence on early Christianity—his mission trips to the Gentiles spread the Church throughout the known world. Paul’s conversion is even more striking when one considers that he had been a deadly persecutor of the Church and had a role in the murder of Christiani-ty’s first martyr, St. Stephen. But the Lord had other plans for Paul. On the road to Damascus, Saint Paul is knocked off of his horse and hears the Lord’s voice: “Saul, Saul why do you persecute me?” After that experience, he becomes Christianity’s greatest missionary and dies a heroic martyr’s death in Rome. However, the story is a little more complicated. After his conver-sion, St. Paul continues to exhibit a lot of the same traits he ex-hibited when he was persecuting the Church. His letters and the Acts of the Apostles show him as being hot tempered, predis-posed to harsh language, and in regular conflict with others-- including other apostles. He continues to struggle with sin—in one letter he writes “What I do, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate.” Despite his conversion, much of Paul remained the same. The Book of Proverbs says that the righteous man falls seven times and rises again. There is a great story from the Desert Fa-thers where a visitor comes to the monastery and asks what the monks do all day. The old monk replied “Well, we fall down, and we get up again; we fall down and we get up again.” The life of Saint Paul reminds us that conversion is a process. We are always converting, needing to grow in holiness, to grow in charity for our brothers and sisters. And, like Saint Paul, may we get back up when we fall.

Discernment of Spirits Workshop According to Saint Ignatius As part of our three parish catechesis program, we are happy to offer a new educational opportunity. Beginning February 1, 2017 St. Thomas of Canterbury will be sponsoring an eleven week series of talks and study in English on “The Discernment of Spirits.” These talks are based upon the first set of St. Ignatius’ rules of discernment of spirits. This study group will meet on Wednesday evenings from 7:00–8:30 in the rectory dining room. The group will use a combination of video presentations, personal sharing, and a text book (not required). For more information or to register contact Matt Goodwin at 1-316-765-2593 or speak with Fr. Paul or Christine Pao at St. Thomas. Matt, originally from Wichita, Kansas, is a Conventual Franciscan postulant living and studying here in Chicago at the Conventual Franciscan Formation House.

Next week, we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America. Please give generously to this collection, which assists programs that strengthen the faith in Latin America and the Car-ibbean.
