Learning OutcomesUpon completion of this lesson, the student will have demonstrated the ability to:

• Perform competencies involving entry and exit from a simulated radiologically controlled area including:

• Use of a radiological work permit• Use and placement of personnel dosimetry• Observance and adherence to radiological posting• Perform and document a loose surface contamination

survey;• Perform pre-operational checks on portable survey

instrumentation;• Perform and document a radiation survey;

Instructions

• The Student Guide for this PE explains the nature and conduct of this PE.

• This PE is your practical factors demonstration for grading.• As you can see in the Learning Outcomes, you are evaluated

on several basic competencies.• Each competency has several elements which must be

performed – the critical ones without error.• In previous PEs you have been coached and instructed in

each of these competencies.• Now you will be graded without additional instruction or

coaching.

Scenario

The final hiring process for Top Notch Inc. requires that the candidates be evaluated performing specific tasks.

A. Enter into a Contaminated Area, perform a contamination survey, and remove a sample bottle from the area (B-509-E).

B. Enter into a Locked High Radiation Area (LHRA) with unknown radiation levels and perform a radiation survey of a known hot spot (A-509-D)

Page 6: RPT Competencies Radiological Safety and Response RPT-243-PE-9.

Scenario (cont’d)

C. Obtain a grab air sample at a specified location; perform a quick count of the air sample; and document the sample and results(509).

Your supervisor will provide the necessary briefing for the tasks.

Task A – Entry in to Contaminated Area

• RWP-201X-Task-9A• Full PCs required for this task• Contamination survey in the conveyor belt end –

minimum of 10 smears. • Retrieve sample bottle from the contaminated area and

bag it across the SOP.• Exit the contaminated area.• Conduct contamination surveys need to release the bag

from the Controlled Area. • Perform required personnel frisk.• Complete documentation

Task B – Entry into LHRA

• RWP-201X-Task-9B• Unknown dose rates in Room A-509-D• Satisfy entry requirements for LHRA• Enter to obtain contact, 12” and general area

dose rates from survey point A-509-6.• Exit and secure the area.• Perform required personnel frisk • Complete required documentation.

Task C – Grab Air Sample in 509

• RWP-201X-Task-9C• Routine Grab Sample (10 min)• Obtain a general area air sample in room 509

general area• Perform quick count and prepare for further

analysis in count room.• Perform required personnel and material frisk. • Complete required documentation.

Other Instructions• After your briefing and as you are called for evaluation,

provide your Student Guide to the Instructor for grading as you perform the tasks.

• Do not separate this package. Maintain it intact.• The Instructor will role play as your supervisor and co-workers

as needed.• IF you fail a critical element – the Instructor will pause and

instruct you in the correct method or technique and reschedule the competency with you for re-evaluation.

• After being evaluated on all 10 competencies, return the RPT-243-PE-9 Practical Exercise Guide document to the Instructor.
