BALQUHAIN CASTLE

The sltetch below shows the castle which was burned by the Duke of Cunberland

in 1746. Ma~ Queen of Scots spent the evening and night here before the

Battle of CorricDie, in 1562. It is situated only a short distance from

the famous battlefield of Harlaw (1414).

The castle was originally built in the 1400s ~ the Leslie6. In the feuds

( Leslies and Forbeses) it was f1~8~ destr.oyed in 1526. Sir William Leslie,

the Seventh Baron of Balquhain, rebuilt the castle in the 1530, in all likli

hood as it was originally. So little of it remains today that a person is not

able to visualize the interior. Nevertheless its massive and extremely

thick walls leave no question as to its effectiveness as a fortress. The

walls enclosing it and some of the buildings adjoining it, can still be traced.

The remains are located in the Parish of Grioch, about one half mile from

the church and about two miles from Inveramsay Junction, on the North of

Scotland Rail~.
