TR saw the presidency as the Country’s manager who was in charge of keeping things running smoothly.

The United Mine Workers called a strike and shut down the Pennsylvania Coal Mines.

Months passed and the price of coal rose as winter approached, while the Union and the Mine owners would not make a deal.

Roosevelt urged the two parties to accept Arbitration- a settlement from an outside third party.

After Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle grabbed the country’s attention to the unsafe working conditions and food safety.

The Pure Food and Drug Act was passed in response- prohibited the unsafe or falsely labeled food or drugs from being sold.
