Is it so?? • Patients that are to research their own personal medical

history, interface with doctors and medical staff, form and participate in social media support groups and even participate in research studies all using the power of the brain is amazing.

INTRODUCTION

•Medical technology companies are focusing more than ever on products that

deliver cheaper, faster, more efficient patient care.

How is Medical Technology defined?

• "Any instrument, apparatus, appliance, software, material or other article, whether used alone or in combination, including the software intended by its manufacturer to be used specifically for diagnostic and/or therapeutic purposes and necessary for its proper application, intended by the manufacturer to be used for human beings.” (Eucomed, 2013)

• Devices are to be used for the purpose of:

• Diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, treatment or alleviation of disease• Diagnosis, monitoring, treatment, alleviation of or compensation for an

injury or handicap• Investigation, replacement or modification of the anatomy or of a

physiological process• Control of conception

Here are five emerging technologies to watch in the year ahead.

5 Technologies to watch for in the year ahead

1.Cutting Back on Melanoma Biopsies1) The goal is to reduce the number of patients left with unnecessary biopsy scars, while eliminating cost

2) A large number of dangerous looking moles are harmless

3) MelaFind optical scanner is not the ultimate diagnosis but provides additional information a doctor can use in determining whether or not to order a biopsy.

2. Electronic Aspirin

• For people who suffer from migraines, cluster headaches, and other head or facial pain

• permanent implant of a small device is inserted in the upper gum on the side of the head affected

• implant connects with the SPG bundle, and when you sense you are about to get a headache, place the remote controller on the cheek nearest the implant.

• SPG nerve block the pain-causing neurotransmitters.

3. Needle-Free Diabetes Care

• This technology involves a handheld device that removes just enough top-layer skin cells to put the patient's blood chemistry within signal range of a patch-borne biosensor.

• The sensor collects one reading per minute and sends the data wirelessly to a remote monitor, triggering audible alarms when levels go out of the patient's optimal range and tracking glucose levels over time.

Robotic Check - Ups

• 4.

• Medical robots now patrol hospital hallways, check on various patients, and manage their individual charts and vital signs without direct human intervention.

• The RP-VITA Remote Presence Robot produced jointly by iRobot Corp. It is the first autonomous navigation remote-presence robot to receive FDA clearance for hospital use.

• The device is a mobile cart with a two-way video screen and medical monitoring equipment

5. A Valve Job with Heart

• a life-saving alternative to open-heart surgery for patients who need new a new valve but can‘t endure the rigors of the operation

• The Sapien valve is guided through the femoral artery by catheter from a small incision near the grown or rib cage. The valve material is made of bovine tissue attached to a stainless-steel stent, which is expanded by inflating a small balloon when correctly placed in the valve space.

• A simpler procedure -shorter hospitalizations to have a positive effect on the cost of care.

PROS AND CONS of Medical Technology in todays society

PROS

• Cheaper than people and therefore make healthcare cheaper also• More accurate and faster

than people

CONS

• The technology coming out will eliminate jobs• Technology can break

and is unreliable
