ABOUT SAMANTHA WALKERMy creative side has always been a part of me. From decorating the halls of my childhood home with a purple crayon, or redecorating the interior of our Toyota station wagon with a lovely orange crayon at the age of 3. I’ve always loved adding my creative touch to the world around me. Fortunately, my parents encouraged me to explore my artsy side. My grandmother on my father’s side was an incredible watercolorist, while my uncle on my mom’s side continues to inspire me with his bright intricate acrylic paintings. My parents are also creative in their own ways.
In college I explored collage and impasto oil painting, later I played with watercolors. My current favorite medium is using my computer and programs like Adobe Illustrator. As a Mom of three growing kids, this way of working is incredibly practical...and easy to clean up. After all, my kiddos are a lot like me. I could just imagine the hey day they would have with purple oil paint running down the halls. I really don’t care for purple streaked hallways anymore. I encourage my kids to explore their creative instincts with washable markers and crayons.
My mind is constantly whirling with new ideas...I just have to remind myself that there is not enough time to work on them all at once. Things get done one thing at a time, but that doesn’t stop my mind from constantly thinking a step ahead while working on another project. I think I’ve always worked this way, as a kid I refused to nap because I didn’t want to miss a thing. As an adult, this hasn’t changed much as I often don’t go to sleep until after 1:00am. I want to squeeze as much out of my day as I possibly can...I truly don’t want to miss a thing. I keep a notebook of different subjects I would like to play with, or techniques I would like to explore, which helps me focus on my current project, without worrying about forgetting what I would like to work on next.
Many of my designs are influenced by childhood memories of the colorful 70‘s, and the many traveling opportunities I’ve had in my life. When I was first married, I was a military wife. My husband and I moved to Japan just one month after getting married, and we lived there for three years. We lived just south of Tokyo in the hustle and bustle of big city life...yet secluded in our military housing neighborhood with grass yards surrounding our home. I took the opportunity to take Sumi-e painting classes (calligraphic flower painting.) We traveled a lot within Japan, and also explored: Hong Kong, Singapore, Guam, and Bali. The imagery of my travels has been engrained in my mind, and has a tendency to naturally come out of my mind when I least expect it. I’m grateful for those experiences.
I am having so much fun creating fabric for Riley Blake. I have learned so much from designing fabric and appreciate the balance of freedom and art direction that Cindy and Jina give me in order to create a successful fabric line.
In addition to designing for Riley Blake, I also design paper for Carta Bella and Echo Park, rubber stamps for JustRite papercraft, digital dies for Silhouette, metal dies for Spellbinders, greeting cards, and home decor prints and accents, and more. I keep pretty busy...and that’s just the way I like it.

About Marian:I have a passion for quilting which sustains me through all life’s joys and trials. My mom and my aunt both made beautiful quilts and they were my inspiration.
I learned to sew as a young girl sitting at the kitchen table watching my mother sew all of my clothes and all of hers. When my first daughter was born I made her a stuffed pink hippopotamus, big enough for her to sit on. My first quilt was made in the early 1970’s and it was a child sized lion sleeping bag. I intended to make more quilts but raising my seven children took all my time.
By 1997 I took my first official quilting class and learned to make a queen sized log cabin Christmas quilt. Making 2 more large log cabin quilts with a scrappy look was the start to my stash which is now neatly organized and covers an entire wall in my quilt room.
I bought a Gammill long arm sewing machine in 2000 and began quilting professionally. I quilted several of the quilts in Blanche Young’s book, “Dresden Flower Garden” which was published by C & T. I worked for Bernina of Las Vegas for 2 years selling and teaching quilting. I also started a web based business about this time, Quilter’s Hideout, which sold quilt books, supplies and fabric. Breast cancer in 2006 brought all of this to a halt as I took a couple of years off to recuperate.
But I can’t stay away from what I love. I am a compulsive quilter and I now spend most of my time designing new quilts, traveling to classes, writing quilt patterns and teaching others to quilt. I usually work on at least 6 quilts at any one time, each in various stages of completion.
I graduated from the University of San Francisco with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in 1969 and received my CPA certificate in 1972. I have a strong foundation in math which I think is why quilting is so pleasing to me. I am proud to be a Grandmother and have 7 children, 14 granddaughters and 7 grandsons. All have quilts made by Grandma.
In 2013 I founded Quilt St George which is an annual quilt retreat in St George, UT. My 3 daughters and 1 son helped me with this endeavor.
