EARLY LIFE

Page 3: Richard Branson leadership & personality traits

Richard Charles Nicholas Branson was born on July 18, 1950, in Surrey, England.

His father, Edward James Branson, worked as a barrister. His mother, Eve Branson, was employed as a flight attendant.

Richard, who struggled with dyslexia, had a hard time with educational institutions.

He nearly failed out of the all-boys Scaitcliffe School, which he attended until the age of 13.

He then transferred to Stowe School, a boarding school in Stowe, Buckinghamshire, England.

Branson dropped out at the age of 16 to start a youth-culture magazine called Student.

The publication, run by students, for students, sold $8,000 worth of advertising in its first edition, which was launched in 1966.

The first run of 50,000 copies was disseminated for free, after Branson covered the costs with advertising.

By 1969, Branson was living in a London commune, surrounded by the British music and drug scene.

Branson had the idea to begin a mail-order record company called Virgin to help fund his magazine efforts.

The company performed modestly, but made Branson enough that he was able to expand his business venture, adding a record shop in Oxford Street, London.

With the success of the record shop, the high school drop-out was able to build a recording studio in 1972 in Oxfordshire, England.

Throughout his life, Richard Branson has never liked paying taxes. Since he started in business at the age of 19 – has been obsessed with money.

He has said that since his late teens, his life ‘was always 99.5 per cent business’.

He successfully undercut the prices of established retailers by avoiding the payment of purchase tax – worth £500,000 in today’s money.

In 1973, the huge profits from his Virgin Music company’s first hit.

As a result, for 40 years, Branson and the Virgin empire have – albeit legally – limited their payment of British taxes to a minimal amount.

LEADERSHIP STYLE

Page 9: Richard Branson leadership & personality traits

PARTICIPATIVE LEADER

“What leadership boils down to is people. Whatever your style, whatever your method, you need to believe in yourself, your ideas and your staff. Nobody can be successful alone and you cannot be a great leader without great people to lead.”

Page 10: Richard Branson leadership & personality traits

“I have always believed in the art of delegation finding the best possible people for Virgin and giving them the freedom and encouragement to flourish. ”

“When I set up Virgin Records, I even decided to separate myself physically from the company, by moving into a houseboat.”
